The Solemnity of St. Peter and St. Paul Sunday, June 29, 2014

Scripture Suddenly the angel of the Lord stood by him

and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and awakened him, saying, "Get up quickly.” (Acts 12;7)

Let my soul glory in the LORD; the lowly will hear me and be glad. (Psalm 34:3)

The Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might be com-pleted and all the Gentiles might hear it. (2Timothy 4:17)

Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. (Mt 16:16,17)

Reflection How does grace enlighten St Peter and St.

Paul? What was the mission of St Paul? What was the mission of St. Peter? What is your mission in the parish community? How did you become enlightened to your role in

the parish community? …If we want to follow him (Jesus) and remain with him; we must “go out” with him to seek the lost sheep, the one that has strayed the furthest. Be sure to remember: (we need to come) out of our-selves, just as God came out of himself in Jesus and Jesus came out of himself for all of us. (Pope Francis 3/27/2013) 1 1 Pope Francis - Church of Mercy 2014 By Ted Bergh ParishVision LLC © 2014 – Visit Parish-Vison.org

Pearls of Wisdom . . . We need to let ourselves be evangelized by them (the poor.) The new evangelization is an invitation to acknowledge the saving power at work in their lives ... We are called to find Christ in them, to lend our voice to their causes, but also to be their friends, to listen to them, to speak for them and to embrace the mysterious wisdom which God wishes to share with us through them. (Pope Francis - The Joy

of the Gospel)

A PRAYER FOR CANADA Let us pray and live for a world where people of all nations will be united in thought, word and deed; help us to be honest, pure and loving in our rela-tions with others in our world. Let us pray for peace and harmony for every person in this nation and every nation; help us to work and live so that all people everywhere will live a good life, that hunger, poverty, ignorance and disease will disappear and the kingdom come indeed. Amen.

Happy Birthday Canada!

Fourteenth Sunday Ordinary Time Sunday, July 6, 2014 LEARN FROM ME

The coming of the peacemaking king. (Zechariah) If the Spirit of Jesus lives within you, then you will live. (Romans)

The weary find rest, for his yoke is easy. (Matthew)

In a famous New Yorker car-

toon, two men are standing be-fore a large billboard that reads “STOP AND THINK.” They stare at it for awhile, and one of them

says: “Kind of makes you want to stop and think.” Today’s gospel does the same. Jesus says: “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest…For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” Upon hearing this, we might stop and think that yes, indeed, we are heavily-burdened. We might even think that Je-sus’ invitation sounds too good to be true. “Faith is to believe what you do not see,” St. Augustine once observed. “The reward of this faith is to see what you believe.” It’s not easy to follow Jesus in our time and place, but if we do, Jesus will give us the faith to see what we believe. In that moment, in his peace, we will truly know rest. -- Dc. Dick Folger

“REGENERATE(D) 2014” CATHOLIC CONFERENCE

“The same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead is in you” (Romans 8:11).

Come, live the story! Everyone, in every age, has the opportunity to live the story: Jesus’ story. All those who have been baptized, from the first to the last, enter the story with a special role to play at their appointed time. It is the story that God has prepared beforehand for each of us -- the only one that will bring joy and pur-pose to our lives. The question is: Are we living the story? If not, what story are we living? Branches Catholic Ministries invites you to “Regenerate(d) 2014” Catholic Conference to be held Sep-tember 27-28 at the nearby Scotiabank Conven-tion Centre (6815 Stanley Ave.). You may pur-

chase tickets through Branches Catholic Books & Gifts or register online at www.go2branches.com ($75 each or $55 “early-bird”). For more infor-mation, call 905/685-7000 or e-mail them. Besides our own Bishop Gerard Bergie, speakers include Jeff Cavins, Michael Coren, Matthew Leon-ard, Fr. Mitch Pacwa, Ken Yasinski -- with musical performances by Marian Grace and the Glory Col-lective.

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, July 13, 2014

A MISSIOLOGY TO MAKE OUR OWN God speaks and the word creates what God de-sires. (Isaiah)

We believe that our present suffering is the seed of future glory. (Romans)

The seed is the word of God. (Matthew)

Were we born planted in the good soil, or were we born rootless among the dry rocks? Job laments: “The Lord gave and the Lord has tak-

en away.” Jesus says: “From those who have noth-ing, even what they have will be taken away.” Some are born gifted. Mozart could create beautiful music in endless variations upon a 12-tone scale. Some financial wizards earn enormous wealth. Others ascend to global leadership and power. Still others are born with severe physical and mental limitations. The seed seems to be sown randomly. But fruitfulness is not always about being a genius or wealthy, or powerful. Those born in good soil are the ones who hear and understand God’s word. They bear fruit in patience and bless the world.-- Dc. Dick Folger

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, July 20, 2014

POWER AND MERCY Those who are just must be kind... and permit re-pentance for sin. (Wisdom) Because we do not

know how to pray, the Spirit inspires the prayer. (Romans) The weeds and wheat grow together until harvest time. (Matthew)

You surely know the say-ing, “Birds of a feather flock together.” In high school, most of us found that the type of friends we

had defined who we would become. We may be sitting here at Mass today because our parents were watchful of who our friends were. They knew the dangers of letting us fall into the wrong crowd. In Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” Lord Polonius speaks of the value of good friends. He says that once we have proven and tested them, we should never lose them. He tells Laertes to bind them to his soul “with hoops of steel.” These good friends are the wheat, and they may be our salvation. Other people are the evil weeds. We have grown up in their midst. At the end of time, today’s gospel tells us, the weeds will be gathered up for burning

and the good wheat will be gathered into the barn. May we be counted among the good, to shine like the sun in the kingdom of God. -- Dc. Dick Folger
