A Light in DecemberHanukkah or Chanukah – which way do you spell it? No matter which is your preference, this joyous holiday pays tribute to the dedication of a group of Jewish people who fervently believed in their right to religious and nationalistic freedom. Known as the Festival of Lights, it is traditionally spent staying home with friends and family. Festivities include eating unique foods (especially those fried in oil, such as latkes and jelly filled donuts), playing games such as dreidel (each side of the dreidel bears a letter of the Hebrew alphabet, which together form the acronym for Nes Gadol Ha-yah Sham, or “a great miracle happened there”) and just spending time together. However you choose to celebrate this time of the year, both Chanukah and Christmas present a beautiful opportu-nity to open one’s house and heart and to spread some joy. Please consider including Hadassah Medical Center on your gift list for 2019. Your financial support helps the dedicated research staff perform “modern miracles” that will ensure a longer, healthier life for us all. Thank you for supporting us this year and helping our chapter reach our goals. I encourage you to continue to support our endeavors and hope you’ll join us at chapter meetings and fundraising events.
The Festival of Lights begins the evening of Dec. 2 and ends the evening of Dec. 10. It commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian Greek Army and the subse-quent miracle of rededi-cating the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, thus re-storing its menorah – or lamp. The miracle of Chanukah is that the oil that was found had just enough oil to illuminate the Temple Lamp for one day, and yet it lasted for eight full days.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
The 2013 film, The Book Thief, is a World War II drama directed by Brian Percival and starring Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson and Sophie Nélisse. The film is based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Markus Zusak. The story is about a young girl living with her adoptive German family during the Nazi era. Taught to read by her kind-hearted foster father, the girl begins “borrow-ing” books and sharing them with the Jewish refugee being sheltered by her foster parents in their home.

Ladies of Vitalia Hadassah Chap-ter’s quarterly book club luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, January 23, 2019. The selected book is The Two-Family House by Lynda Cohen Loigman. This novel is a family saga set in post-war Brooklyn. It focuses on two families related by blood and marriage who share a two-family brownstone. During a blizzard (without their husbands at home), two babies are born min-utes apart and the women decide to swap the babies, thus changing their lives forever. An impenetrable bond was forged before and during that dramatic night; but as the years progress, small cracks start to ap-pear and their once deep friendship begins to unravel. This is a moving family saga filled with heart, emo-tion, longing, love and mystery. Details about the lunch venue will be announced soon. For details about the club, please contact Renee Katz at 772-345-2644 or [email protected].

In today’s society it is said that we have forsaken the village for the
metropolis, turning our neighbors into strangers, and losing the word
“community” from our lexicon.
