What’s new? Happy New Year! The calendar year started with Upper Sixth Preliminary Examinations and we’d like to congratulate them on the serious approach they have taken to this. University offers are being received thick and fast now and we’re excited to report four very generous offers from Oxford have already been received! Year 11s Prelims. were completed just before Christmas and they have their “Results Assembly” next Thursday 17th January where they will receive Preliminary results and have some time to reflect and consider their outcomes and how they can improve on these between now and the summer examinations. Evaluating outcomes is an important part of learning; they need to consider which subjects they achieved well in and identify why this was so successful and where they have underperformed and consider whether this was due to examination technique, careless errors, their writing style and accuracy, retention of knowledge or a lack of quality revision that let them down. Revision is best when it is frequent and in short bursts with lots of opportunities to recap knowledge, recall information and re-present this in different ways. Parents can help by providing a quiet environment, removing phones and social media during these periods and providing lots of water and a few chocolate biscuits! You can also provide revision guides, flashcards and test them regularly on formulae, facts and quotations. You might consider reading set texts for English alongside them or watching films associated with texts or key topics so you can engage in discussion and debate on these over the dinner table! You can also take a text book and ask them questions posed on a particular topic to see how much they can recall confidently or look on Youtube with them for associated videos that can enrich and support their learning. The curriculum pages on our website provide a good starting point. Course counselling is also pending for Year 11; we have been inundated with Sixth form applications this year which is a credit to our outstanding Sixth Form team. Many of our Year 11s are among those applications. Senior staff will be interviewing them all this half term to ensure they have made aspirational but realistic decisions, understand the implications of their choices and have a plan B! We are all too aware that their health and well-being is the most important consideration; our tutors, Year Leaders, Pastoral Managers, Student Inclusion Manager, Mental Health Champion and, of course, subject staff are all here to help or sign-post you to more specialist support. Sleeping well, eating well, exercising and keeping hydrated are as important as acquiring knowledge in the preparation for examinations. We wish all our Year 11 and Upper Sixth the very best wishes for the months ahead, Mrs Gee, Headteacher Bulletin 14/1/19 Yr 9 Please return the immunisation consent forms to the school office by Monday 21 st January please. What’s new? Happy New Year! The calendar year started with Upper Sixth Preliminary

Examinations and we’d like to congratulate them on the serious approach they have

taken to this. University offers are being received thick and fast now and we’re

excited to report four very generous offers from Oxford have already been received!

Year 11s Prelims. were completed just before Christmas and they have their

“Results Assembly” next Thursday 17th January where they will receive

Preliminary results and have some time to reflect and consider their outcomes and

how they can improve on these between now and the summer examinations.

Evaluating outcomes is an important part of learning; they need to consider which

subjects they achieved well in and identify why this was so successful and where

they have underperformed and consider whether this was due to examination

technique, careless errors, their writing style and accuracy, retention of knowledge

or a lack of quality revision that let them down. Revision is best when it is frequent

and in short bursts with lots of opportunities to recap knowledge, recall information

and re-present this in different ways.

Parents can help by providing a quiet environment, removing phones and social

media during these periods and providing lots of water and a few chocolate biscuits!

You can also provide revision guides, flashcards and test them regularly on

formulae, facts and quotations. You might consider reading set texts for English

alongside them or watching films associated with texts or key topics so you can

engage in discussion and debate on these over the dinner table! You can also take a

text book and ask them questions posed on a particular topic to see how much they

can recall confidently or look on Youtube with them for associated videos that can

enrich and support their learning. The curriculum pages on our website provide a

good starting point.

Meet some of our new Year 9 Student

Councillors:

John Porter joined Student Council so that he could be

an ambassador for mental health to help raise

awareness. He feels that it is important that all students

feel safe and supported in school.

Jesulayomi Bello believed it would be a good

experience for her to join Student Council and to be

able to speak on the students’ behalf on any issues that

may arise.

Kate Myall thought that joining the Student Council

would improve her self-confidence. She would like to

help improve the school

for future students.

They are happy for

students to approach them

about any ideas or

concerns they have that

they could share with the

rest of the Student

Council.

A big well done to all the students who took part

in this term’s Book

Bingo competition. Over

2700 books have been

read by Yr7 and 8 which

is an excellent total.

Congratulations in

particular to Bianca

SIXTH FORM FOCUS

A word from the Sixth Form: As we return from the holidays, the Upper Sixth are now well into

their Preliminary Public Examinations (PPE’s) before their

real exams this summer. The students have been

conducting themselves as we would expect and adhering

to formal examination conditions, so I wish them the best

of luck. We look forward to sharing their results and

reflecting upon them in our Upper Sixth Prelim results

session on the 31st January. As we approach the deadline

for UCAS applications I am also once again encouraged

by the number of students who have used the support

offered in school to submit applications for both

university admission and Higher Level Apprenticeships,

the results of which I hope to share with you shortly.

Finally, good luck to the Lower Sixth, who will be taking

part in mini-Prelim examinations in classes for the

majority of their subjects over the next few weeks. I

encourage them to work hard for these as preparation for

their more formal set of PPE’s in the summer.
