Primary Newsfrom Ms. Cate O’Leary

Primary School Coordinator

Le Mardi Gras / Carnevale in Year 6 LOTEOn Monday 4 March, the Year 6 French and Italian class combined to make pancakes for Shrove Tuesday and celebrate Le Mardi Gras / Carnevale together.

We all had a lot of fun piling cream, chocolate, ice-cream, strawberries and much, much more on top of our pancakes. It was great to have a combined lesson because we mixed our groups between the French and Italian girls around and learnt some new words of a different language.

- Bree Copeland [Year 6 French]

After we had finished our pancakes we decorated some paper masks with textas, pencils, feathers and glitter. And let me tell you, there are some pretty crazy masks at Mardi Gras and Carnevale. Overall it was a very fun and tasty experience! A big grazie/merci to Signora Zora and Mademoiselle Rossi for allowing this deliciously fun celebration happen! - Estella Rauda [Year 6 Italian]

‘Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard’

The girls are all geared up and excited about our upcoming Sports Day this Sunday. There is a buzz of activity around

the school as all are involved in aspects of this special day. The Junior Primary classes are getting into the rhythm for their warm up dance to ‘Better When I’m Dancing’. The Year 5 Class have been heard practicing their cheers with enthusiasm and volume and all classes are participating in the ball games and displaying positive team work. A reminder that all raffle books need to be back by tomorrow. Due to Sunday Sports Day, Monday is a late start. Students are asked to come at 10:30am for recess and then at 11:00am all classes will start for the day.

Parent Teacher Interviews are in Week 10 (Tuesday) and Week 11 (Wednesday). You will receive an information letter about our online booking later this week.

We thank our Year 3 Class for presenting an exciting Assembly yesterday. The next Assembly will be in Week 10

and will be hosted by the Year 2 Class.

SwimmingThis week the Year 3 and 4 classes are having a week of swimming lessons at the North Adelaide Aquatic Centre. As all students have varying levels of ability and confidence in the water, the very organised, and competent instructors were certainly supportive and made the learning sessions varied and enjoyable. The instructors also made many comments of praise regarding our girls’ focus, manners and cooperation during the lessons.

Maths in ReceptionWe have been investigating ages and birthdays as part of a Maths project with Miss Delloso and Ms Osborne. We have looked at birthdates and discussed what months and years mean. We

In and around the classrooms:

have been sorting the class by their age and month of their birthday and learning how to collect and collate data to make tables and graphs. We know that our graphs will have to change soon though as a few Receptions have birthdays coming up!

SACPSSA Catholic Swimming CarnivalOn Monday 18 March, 17 swimmers from Years 3 to 6 attended the Catholic Swimming Carnival at Burnside. This year we moved up to Section 2 which consisted of all 50m events and it was the first time that Year 3 students were involved. The girls all performed consistently and we were very surprised with the overall result, first place! This means St Dominic’s will move up to Section 1 next year which is an outstanding achievement for the girls as they compete against both boys and girls.

A special mention to the fantastic parent helpers, in particular Kelli Cameron who assisted as a coach, Bec Copeland and Catherine Hawkins.

Congratulations to Morgan Hillman who won the medal for Under 11 Age champion. The Year 5 and 6 swimmers were crowned Year 5 and 6 Age Champions respectively.

A great team effort - Well Done!Mrs Michelle Richter

Sports Day 2019We are looking ahead to Sports Day to be held at

Sacred Heart College, Somerton Park on Sunday, 24 March, for all St Dominic’s

students from Reception to Year 12.

Frequent St Dominic’s Sports Day-goers have most of the useful information at their fingertips, but it is worth repeating, especially for our new families in Reception, Year 7, and Year 8.

The program commences at 9:00am sharp with the House March. Students are to arrive by 8:45am.

A map showing the location of Sacred Heart College can be requested via the College Office, or accessed on Google Maps here: https://goo.gl/maps/W35ixWrffh22

Every student needs to have on her sports skirt, coloured house top, house cap, white knee high socks and sandshoes (predominantly white).

All parents are asked to lend a hand - even for just an hour - on one of the stalls or on the field. You will have a good time. Have you sent in your name yet? | http://signup.com/go/YujvNEw

Again, this week we are asking parents of students needing assistance with transport to Sacred Heart to communicate via the reply slip, inside today’s Bulletin.

Please be advised that NO Party Poppers or Glitter are permitted to be used at Sports Day.

The Raffle Books were sent home last week and have some excellent prizes. We ask you to show your strong support. The proceeds go to St Dominic’s Sport and PE Program.

Late Start on Monday 25 March: Parents should note that in recognition of the tremendous community effort put into Sports Day, lessons start on Monday 25 March at 10:50am. Due to this late start, Lunch Orders will only be available to Reception - Year 6 students. Orders must be at the Tuckshop no later than 11am. Secondary students are welcome to purchase their lunch at lunchtime, choosing from the selection of cold and hot items available.

Sports Day SafetyEvery year there is concern about parents and students crossing the track during the races. It poses a great danger to competitors and

spectators. Please ONLY cross the track when and where directed by Sports Day Officials.

National Day of Action Against Bullying and

Violence Friday 15 March

On Friday, we joined with schools around the nation to mark the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. Every individual matters and has a human right to be uniquely themselves. “Mean on purpose behaviours”, be it face to face or online, are damaging and not condoned. Within this College community, we are always striving to cultivate an environment where students feel safe and enjoy their learning. Therefore as a school we showed our support for this campaign. Throughout the day, students took photos with large red love hearts, made by our Primary students and teachers acknowledged this day within their teaching programs. At St Dominic’s Priory College, we say ‘NO’ to bullying and violence and ‘YES’ to opening our hearts and spreading love.

Ms Muriel Noujaim, Deputy Principal (Wellbeing)

Bullying HeartsWe got a heart that was smooth, red and beautiful. We took some time looking and talking about how perfect the heart looked. After, we scrunched them up and stepped on it. We then realised it didn’t look so perfect any-more, so we opened them up and tried to get all the creases out but it didn’t work. We learnt that if you bully someone they will get hurt in their heart. And even if you say sorry and play with them and be nice there’s always going to be a part of their heart that is going to be hurt forever. – Bianca Yr 3
