What’s New: We are proud to offer seven languages, other than English in our broad
curriculum. This week we have been given the funding to offer an
eighth—Arabic. From September 2018, we hope to provide extra-
curricular classes which will introduce our students and the community
to the Arabic language and culture—and we will be able to proudly
boast that we now teach the 5 most spoken languages in the world.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE MATTERS
Did you know?
90% attendance is the equivalent of half a day off each week in a school year
90% attendance is the equivalent of 4 weeks off school in one school year
90% attendance is equal to 95 hours of learning lost
17 missed school days a year can lead to a drop of one whole GCSE grade on results
day
PUNCTUALITY ALSO MATTERS
Missing 5 minutes of lesson time each day adds up to 3 days lost per year
Punctuality matters – missing 15 minutes each day adds up to 2 weeks lost per year
Being 30 minutes late each day adds up to 19 days in a year (almost four whole
weeks of lost learning )
Arriving on time is as important as being in school every day
When the school is asked to write references, we are always asked about attendance
and punctuality. What would yours say?

Quote of the week:
“Education is not preparation for
life; education is life itself.”
John Dewey (born 1859) was an American
philosopher, psychologist, and educational
reformer whose ideas have been
influential in education and social reform.
The final groups took part in their DofE qualifying expedition.
THANK YOU: Thank you to all those students for their assistance with our Open
Evening. Whether you were a tour guide, helping in the
department, performing in Drama, taking part in a sporting
activity or delivering a speech to the prospective parents, your
contribution to this evening is invaluable in creating an
informative and also entertaining evening for all prospective
parents and students.
Thank you also to Isabelle Hampton-Zabotti, Brady Asumang,
Alice Tunningley, Ed Loveday, Ella Hardy and Megan Doyle for
their help with promoting our school at a local schools fair in
Romford about our unique, outstanding Sixth Form.
A word from the Sixth Form: We are now well into the school year and by this time
you should all be in good study habits both inside and
outside of school. I'm very pleased to see so many of
you using the study room and other quiet learning
spaces to get your set work completed, but perhaps
more importantly focusing on the skills that we know
make the biggest difference when it comes to
successful Sixth Formers: reviewing and adding to
what you have learnt previously, improving your
exam technique and reading ahead on what is to
come. Cementing these habits as part of your daily
routine both in school and at home will mean that you
are doing everything you can to reach your potential
in the future.
Upper Sixth students have just received their Term 4
reports and this is a prime opportunity to work out
what is going well, what isn't and to work with your
teachers to try to improve it. Remember, we pride
ourselves on the quality of our student/teacher
relationships in our school, so make the most of this
and speak to your teachers about how you can
improve no matter what your prediction - keep
striving to be the very best you can be.
Lower Sixth students have settled in well and we have
been impressed by how well you have responded to
the demands of the Sixth Form so far. However, as
things get harder during the year remember there is a
lot of support for you within our Sixth Form Team,
from your Form Tutor and your class teachers, so
make sure you use it so that you can focus on your
studies successfully.

Literacy Corner: Congratulations to our word millionaires – money can’t buy the value of
these reading achievements! Bob Harrison 8S, gold for reading 5 million
words; Elizabeth Dean 9P, silver for reading 2 million words; Ruairidh
Ottoway 9N, silver for reading 2 million words; Alexandra Kostic 8S,
silver for reading 2 million words.
These impressive efforts were recorded as part of the school’s current
reading aid programme, Accelerated Reader. A new reading programme,
Reading Pro, was introduced in September. This new scheme allows
students to access 400 ebooks with audio functions. Students also get
personalised book lists based on their hobbies and interests and will be able
to take their reading tests, book quizzes and access book lists all from one
website as well as from home. Research has shown that reading regularly is
an essential ingredient for success in all aspects of school life and all
subjects, research has shown. It’s also great for student well-being.
