ISSUE NO. 30 DATE: 19th September, 2014

HELLO FROM THE PRINCIPAL!

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

As we are on the down hill run to summer and all the extra out door things that come with the nicer weather, we introduce to you our Walk and Wheels programme, in conjunction with Travelwise. From the start of next term, we will be having a walk and wheel drop off point by the roundabout on Wairere Road. Children can be dropped off with their bike or scooter and can ride down the road, across the pedestrian crossing and into school. They will have their passport clipped by an adult who will meet them and, if they ride from the Walk and Wheel point at least 4 days in the week, the students will be able to ride their bikes or scooters on Friday during school breaks. The Walk and Wheel campaign is not only to get kids out there doing it, but also to ease the congestion that we are experiencing at our school drop off and at the Mt Lebanon entrance.

If the Wairere Road Walk and Wheel station is successful, we will try to add other drop off stations around The Gardens area. We will encourage children of all ages to use the Walk and Wheel station, so our under-Year 4’s can be supervised by adults in their short ride to school, but at this stage, we will keep our Bike and Scooter License to Year 4 and above, for children who are not supervised and ride from other areas.

We hope that you will get behind this program and help support us with the Travelwise message. Thanks also to Mrs Pearson, for her hard work and dedication to supporting fitness and road safety at our school.

Thursday 18 September 2014

To whom it may concern,

Hello, I am a student of Kakapo 2 and I'm writing to you because there is a high rate of people speeding around schools, including possibly you. Over 1,000 kids have died because of speeding, each year.

If you don't stop speeding, you could either crash, run over someone or something worse. You could be charged by the police as well.

This letter is a warning, do not speed in front of schools. It’s dangerous, you could get someone killed. The speed limit is 40 km/h around schools at all times. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Yours faithfully, S.J Campbell.

Writing to Socialise: This term, our school wide writing focus is “Writing to Socialise”. This includes writing letters, invitations and emails. The following letter was written by Sam Campbell in Kakapo 2.

CHOIR:On  Thursday  evening,  our  choir  was  joined  by  Mrs  Lee’s  choir  from  Brookby  school  to  perform  a  bracket  of  songs    at  Totara  Hospice  as  guests  arrived  for  a  special  memorial  service.    They  sang  a  selecBon  of  New  Zealand  songs  from  the  World  Vision  Kids  for  Kids  Concert  two  weeks  earlier,  with  harmonies  and  parts  pracBsed  only  once  together  in  our  school  foyer  –  with  wonderful  acousBcs  -‐    before  we  went  across  the  road  to  perform.    The  sang  beauBfully  together    -‐  and  behaved  very  appropriately  for  the  circumstances.    “Welcome    Home”      by  Dave  Dobbyn  brought  tears  to  eyes  –  literally.    It  was  a    great  opportunity  for  our  students  to  be  involved  in  the  community  and  was  appreciated  by  the  hospice  and  guests.
