Blessings upon you on this holy day! The second collection this weekend (May 30-31) is for our Grief Ministries. We have a number of different ways in which we assist people who are suffering because of the death of a loved one. One group, run by Fr. Joe Quinn, OFM, meets with people who have recently lost loved ones. The Emmaus group, run by Diane and Charley Monaghan, assists parents who have lost a child. Often people find our Spiritual Companionship program helpful. This program is directed by Fr. Gene Pistachio, OFM. And finally, often people find help at the Counseling Center here at the Shrine. That Center is run by Br. Paul OKeeffe, OFM. All of these programs have related costs, so we thank you for your contributions toward these good programs.
The weekday Rosary prayer group meets on Thursdays at 12:30pm in front of the Mary, Mother of God, statue in the first floor church. This is a new gathering and we are grateful for the enthusiasm that this new group has generated.
AARP magazine has named Downtown Crossing (the neighborhood of the Shrine) as the third most livable neighborhood in the United States. One of the things that makes a neighborhood livable, I would gently suggest, is having a nice convenient place to place to pray!
The Shrine is beginning a training program for people who would like to become certified as spiritual directors. This program will begin in September 2015. Classes will take place here on Arch Street on the third Saturday of the month, with four meetings per semester. The program includes the reading of current spiritual direction books and articles, leading prayer, listening to and interacting with guest speakers, practicing spiritual direction skills, doing an internship under the direction of an individual supervisor and peer supervision, presenting oral and written papers, and making a retreat. The program is credentialed through Cardinal Stritch University, a Franciscan University in Milwaukee WI. The curriculum was developed by Sr. Linda Greenwood, OSF, of the San Damiano House of Prayer in Lowell, Massachusetts. The Director of the Shrines program is Nancy Nichols Kearns who can be reached at 617-542-6440 x120 and [email protected] Please contact her for more information. My thanks to Nancy for her terrific work in beginning this program.
As you can gather from my recent bulletin letters, I spend much of my time these days on long-term plans for the Shrine. There are a remarkable number of new initiatives here. We Arch Street friars are so grateful for the hundreds of terrific people who partner with us on our ministries. Please know that the friars of Holy Name Province (Franciscans on the east coast of the U.S.) are very committed to a long-term presence here in downtown Boston. Peace and all good things!
Fr. Thomas Conway, OFM Executive Director
