Speaker of the week

VP Ashi invited Rtn. Uttam Kripalani to introduce the Guest Speaker, Mr. Terrence Fernandez. Rtn. Uttam noted a very well-known song written by Lee Hays and Pete Seegar, and he gamely, sang two verses of the “If I had a hammer” (The Hammer Song), and he wondered if the speaker, Mr. Fernandez, got some inspiration from this song. Rtn. Uttam advised that Mr. Fernandez was an entrepreneur, with over 12 years of experience in branding, advertising and sales. He has successfully consulted and delivered the Scotwork Suite of negotiating courses to his business partners that include MNCs and many other prominent companies.

Mr. Fernandez thanked Rtn. Uttam for the introduction and added that he drew inspiration from another song and started to sing the opening bars of “I’d rather be a hammer than a nail” (El Condor Pasa). Mr. Fernandez’s animated talk received lively responses from members, particularly in suggestions on how to resolve his personal conflicts, involving his wife, a football match and his leaking roof! He highlighted the fact that as a trained negotiater, his first tool was to persuade, to problem solve and then to negotiate/ trade. He added that members should not view pressure due to unrealistic demand as a problem, but rather as an opportunity. Mr. Fernandez further recounted some of his company’s successes in assisting other companies. Rtn. Jeremy Han warmly thanked Mr. Fernandez for his entertaining talk which drew the audience into an interesting and lively discussion.

The Guide to Daily LivingBefore doing the things we want to do, consider first, the precept of the guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and act upon them:First: Have I spent some time in self-examination?Second: Have I spent quality time with my family?Third: Have I given my best to my work?Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far?The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary.
