Belize Downs Antigua & Barbuda for Third Spot
WILLEMSTAD, Curacao: For the second time in their two
meetings, Tichele Solis was one of three players to score in
double-digits as Belize overpowered Antigua & Barbuda in
straight sets for third spot in their second round NORCECA
Group J qualifiers for the 2014 FIVB Women’s World
Championship in Italy on Sunday night.
Playing in the penultimate match of the four-team
tournament, Solis tallied 13 points, all spikes, while
Shantell Arnold got 12, five of which were aces, and captain Sherylee Young-Thornton, 11 in their 25-16,
25-20, 25-18 victory in 61 minutes at the International School of Curacao Auditorium, Willemstad.
It was the second win in as many meetings for 27th NORCECA ranked Belize over 19th ranked Antigua &
Barbuda, after emerging 25-11, 18-25, 25-22, 25-13 victors when both teams met on Saturday’s opening
day of competition.
Going into the match, Antigua & Barbuda, the second ranked team in the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball
Association (ECVA) behind fellow group opponents, St Lucia, was desperate to avenge the opening day
loss, but yet again it was outplayed by a much more determine Belize unit which outscored its
opponent, in spikes (31-15) and service aces (12-2).
For Antigua & Barbuda, Kwansia Carr had a team best six points and Naheemah Wilson, five in the loss.
Commenting after the match, Giselle Azar, Antigua and Barbuda captain noted the absence of some key
players in the team affected their blocking and attack strength, which was two of their weak points
during the two-day tournament.
She added, “We still managed to step up our passing from the two previous matches and we played with
a little more passion and energy, but it the end it was still not good enough and I credit Belize for their
play.
”Young-Thornton, was delighted with the win by her Belize team to secure third spot.
She said, “Coming into the tournament we had our target of a top two finish, but we were not able to
get it and end the end, the experience of playing at this level against teams from the other zones that
make up NORCECA was a great experience for us.”
Antigua & Barbuda coach, Esron Gittens while admitting his team missed the services of some key
players said he was still disappointed with the results as he thinks his team is much better than winning
only set in four matches.
Allan Sharp, coach of Belize said he was very proud of his team even though it missed out on a top two
finish which would have secured an automatic qualification spot to the third round.
He added, “For us it was a great experience to play against the taller, stronger and more athletic teams
than we normally do, because in Central America we are used to playing against the smaller players.
Sharp also praised NORCECA for its vision in the way the qualifiers were set up whereby teams from
different zones have to face each other.
“As a team and federation, Belize is very happy for the great exposure we got because we know it will
help us to improve in the future,” said Sharp.
By finishing third Belize still has a chance to qualifying for the third round, but will need to do so as the
best third place finisher from all six groups of the second round qualifiers.
In Sunday’s final that followed host Curacao which topped the round-robin series with maximum 15
points came up against Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association champions, St Lucia, with both teams
already assured of qualification to the third round of qualification to Italy,
When they met on Saturday morning, Curacao won 25-12, 25-22, 25-19.

World Championship with a
commanding straight sets (25-10, 25-
15, and 25-11) triumph over Eastern
Caribbean Volleyball Association
champions St Lucia at the
International School of Curacao
Auditorium, Willemstadon Sunday night.
Leading the way for the host country which played unbeaten throughout the tournament winning all
four matches by 3-0 margins was USA-based Anthony who attends North Carolina Central University
(NCCU) with a tournament-high 24 points, punctuated with 18 kills, four aces and two blocks.
Lianne Jamanika chipped in with nine, Geraldine Grigorius, eight, and Sonela Philips, six for Curacao
which got the win in 56 minutes, the fastest of the competition.
St Lucian captain, Natalie Edward and Indira Laurencin were the only real source of resistance for the St
Lucians with eight and seven points respectively.
From the opening set it was all Curacao as the host country stormed into a an 8-0 lead in the first before
St Lucia got its first point of the match, and despite minor lapses in defence, the host won the first set
with relative ease led by the four-prong attack of Anthony, Grigorius, Neysa Hooi and Jamanika
The second set began the same way as the first with Curacao building a 9-4 lead before St Lucia closed
to within two points at 12-10 after which the host stepped up its game and pulled away for another
comfortable set victory.
Faced with the difficult task of clawing its way back into the match, St Lucia never got going and was
easily overpowered in the third set, handing Curacao the gold medal before its vociferous home
spectators who had crammed into the venue.
Speaking after the match, St Lucia captain Edwards said she felt her team never really turned up at the
tournament and was no match for Curacao in the final.
“We know we can play better than we did and to be honest it seems as though we were just surviving
each match.
Maya Gomez, captain of Curacao was full of praise for her team which she said played an excellent
match.
“The girls have been training for a very long time and it’s nice to see that our hard work has brought
reward.
“Tonight’s final for us was not that difficult as we were very determine as a group to get the gold medal
in front of our home crowd and in the end we were able to do that.”
St Lucia coach, Florian Combie, first congratulated Curacao on a tournament well played noting it’s
something his team can sure learn from.
“We did not get the gold medal we wanted but second place also ensures that we qualify for the next
round and we now have to regroup, encourage some players to rejoin the team and return as a
stronger unit for the next round.
An elated Henri Delfina, Curacao's coach noted his team’s journey to the gold medal was not
that difficult as while St Lucia has a good team it has to improve technically.
“With regards to Curacao I think we defended well and credit must be given to Neysa Hooi for having an
excellent match while my setter, team captain Maya had her best match of the competition.” Stated
Delfina.
