ICON OF - THE RUBLEV TRINITY - A POWERFUL REPRESENTATION

The Rublev Trinity is perhaps the most famous repre-sentation of the Holy Trinity in the world. It was paintedaround 1410 by Andrei Rublev and depicts the three an-gels who visited Abraham at the Oak of Mamre. But it isoften interpreted as an icon of the Trinity and is some-times called the icon of the Old Testament Trinity.

The image is full of symbolism - de-signed to take the viewer intothe Mystery of the Trinity.

Some general thoughts toget us started . . .The threefaces are identical. How mightthis help us to understand the

nature of the Trinity? The fig-ures can be enclosed in a circle.

What might this tell us about thelife of the Trinity? All the figures wear a

blue garment which is the color of the heavens. But each wears something that speaks of theirown identity.

On the left is a figure at rest within Itself. The blue garment is almost hidden by a shim-mering, ethereal robe -The Father, the One who is Creator who cannot be seen by His hu-man creatures. Both hands clasp the staff. All authority in heaven and on earth belong to the

Father. What kind of authority do you find in the figure in the icon? Behind (not merely thetent of Sara and Abraham) the figure is a house the dwelling place of God. " In my Father'sHouse are many mansions - I go to prepare a place for you..." What is the promise foryou in these words of Jesus?

The Christ figure in turn inclines towards the figure on the left, and we

are drawn to gaze there too. " Those who love Me will keep My word and My Father will lovethem - and we will come to them and make our home with them" . What is Jesus promisinghere? The figure wears the blue of divinity. His brown garment speaks of the earth, of His hu-manity. The gold stripe speaks of kingship. - The Christ - Reflect on the form of kingshipbeing represented here. The Christ figure rests two fingers on the table - laying onto itHis divine and His human nature. He points to a cup filled with wine... what does thisrepresent? Behind the central figure (thought to represent Christ) is a tree. This could bethe oak tree at Mamre under which the three angelic visitors rested. The hospitality ofAbraham and Sarah was rewarded in the gift of a son. What does this tell us of the im-portance of hospitality? The tree may also represent the Cross, the tree on which ourSavior died. The tree of death which becomes the tree of eternal life - lost to humanityby the disobedience of Adam and Eve - restored to us by the obedience of Jesus.

Reflect on the paradox of the Cross - the place where death and life confront each other -where death gives way to resurrection - and eternal life. It may also be the tree of life in Revela-tion bearing twelve kinds of fruit, one for each month of the year and the leaves of this tree arefor the healing of the nation. What is the promise here - waiting to be fulfilled?

A blue robe speaking of divinity - a green robe representing new life - The Spirit - If youcan, spend time gazing at the newly unfurled leaves against a blue sky. Reflect on the linkbetween what you see and the figure in the icon. The Spirit touches the table - earthingthe divine life of God. Reflect on that touch and the words of invocation: "Lord, You areholy indeed, the fountain of all holiness. Let Your Spirit come upon these gifts to makethem holy...." Reflect on that touch and its meaning for the life of the world Behindthe figure is a mountain. Mountains are places where people often encountered God -places where heaven and earth seem to touch. Moses met God on mountains. Jesus wastransfigured whilst in prayer on a mountain. Reflect on your own "mountain top" experi-ences - times when you have felt very close to God - when you have felt transfigured andfilled with the Spirit. (These need not necessarily have taken place on mountain tops!)

Elijah could not find God in the earthquake - the wind - the fire on the mountain - but in thegentle breeze which carried the voice of God deep into his being. When have you been aware ofthe presence of the dynamic stillness which is the Spirit within you? The Spirit inclines - drawingour gaze to the central figure - representing Christ.

The subject of the icon is based on the Biblical story about the visit by three Angels to theProphet Abraham and his wife Sarah . According to the theological interpretations whose authorsassociated the Old Testament events with events of the New Testament, these Angels were thethree Persons of the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Though reveal-ing direct iconographic affinity with this kind of representations, the Trinity as painted by Rublev, has its own features which carry a new quality and a new content. In Rublev's icon we observe forthe first time all the three Angels shown equal. This icon alone conformed to the strict rules of the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity.

    CATHOLICS FOR LIFE

"The path to the attainment of the common good and to peace isabove all that of respect for human life in all its many aspects, begin-ning with its conception, through its development and up to its naturalend. True peacemakers, then, are those who love, defend and pro-mote human life in all its dimensions, personal, communitarian and

transcendent. Life in its fullness is the height of peace. Anyone wholoves peace cannot tolerate attacks and crimes against life. "Those who insufficiently value human life and, in consequence, sup-port among other things the liberalization of abortion, perhaps do notrealize that in this way they are proposing the pursuit of a falsepeace. The flight from responsibility, which degrades human persons, and even more so the killing of a defenseless and innocent being, willnever be able to produce happiness or peace." ~Pope Benedict XVI,Message for the World Day of Peace, January 1, 2013

St. John the Baptist School: In the Spotlight Mrs. Laura Celaya, 7th and 8th Grade Enriched Language Arts This is my second year working at St. John's after accumulating six years of teaching a variety of

junior high and high school courses. With the birth of my first daughter, Abigail, I took a breakfrom teaching to complete my master's degree in English from DePaul University. My undergradu-

ate majors at Augustana College were English and Secondary Education, with a minor in Spanish; I have al-ways loved studying languages and how words convey meaning in our world, especially as communicated inliterature. Some day in the far future I may look to complete a doctorate degree in English Literature andteach at the college level, but for now I am very happy working part-time with the students and families at St.John's, and spending time with my husband and the very new addition to our family, our second daughter,Grace.Teaching has always been a favorite pass-time of mine, as well as my career. I love to read literature, and Ilove to inspire a passion for this art in my students. My husband and I were high school sweethearts, so weoften recognize the lasting significance of the years spent in school among peers and under the guidance of teachers. To me, this time is equally important to one's personal growth as the time spent with families. Forthat, I consider myself fortunate to have the privilege of shaping the lives of so many wonderful individuals.
