What’s New This week our Upper Sixth students are engaged in their Preliminary Public Examinations (PPEs) which will give them a real experience of exam papers completed under real time conditions. The revision process and the ability to develop strategies to recall key knowledge and apply this effectively to an exam question is invaluable preparation for the real examinations this summer. Before Christmas, our Year 11 students completed their PPEs and will have a special debrief assembly next week where they will receive a mock certificate revealing the results of these examinations. It is a pivotal moment for many students who either realise their potential and raise their aspirations or, for some, experience the necessary shock of underachieving and the realisation that this certificate does not reflect their true ability. For these students, in particular, the feedback and support from teachers in the following weeks will be invaluable. We will encourage them to attend revision classes, enrichment activities and to engage actively in responding to the advice and guidance offered. This can be a stressful and difficult time for our examination cohorts and it is important that they look after their physical and mental wellbeing as well as their academic performance. Our pastoral team are readily available to support students who may become overly anxious about the examination period. Should you have any concerns about your own child, a friend or recognise in yourself rising feelings of excessive anxiety, it is important that you speak to a trusted adult who may be able to offer advice and support in school or will be able to signpost you to external providers who are experts in this field. We wish all our students embarking on examination years the very best of luck with their studies and preparation and look forward to another successful healthy and happy year at the Anglo. Several of our Upper Sixth students were busy with their “help the homeless” initiative. After collecting all donations from members of the school community they spent days during the school holiday distributing blankets, sleeping bags, coats, scarves, hats and gloves, to homeless members of the public in Essex and London.

Bridge is a competitive card game which teaches great life skills and, working with a partner, develops the skills and techniques necessary to work together as a team in order to beat your opponents. It provides life skills such as how to behave as a champion and how to lose gracefully, patience, self-control, tolerance, perseverance and working towards a goal. Omar Sharif, a famous actor player, said: “Many games provide fun, but bridge grips you. It exercises your mind. Your mind can rust but bridge prevents the rust from forming”. Martina Mavratilova, a famous tennis player, said: “No matter where I go, I can always make new friends at the bridge table”.

Bobby started his football life locally playing for Stones FC and has since played boys club football for Maldon Saints, Hutton Boys Club and Intersports FC. He has also proudly represented Anglo European School football team since Year 7. After representing the Essex football team, Bobby was asked to attend Millwall FC on trial in January 2019. He was duly accepted, signed a contract with them the following month and has now signed a 2-year full-time scholarship beginning in June 2020. He feels the support and guidance he has received from the PE staff at Anglo along with his other teachers have been instrumental in his development.

A guide for Students and Parents GCE/GCSE examinations and JCQ examination information for candidates is now available to view on the AES website. https://www.aesessex.co.uk/examinations/information-for-candidates/ The guide outlines what to bring to exams/what to do if you are late/special considerations/results day etc. Examinations Department

Year 7 Bolu Abiodun was invited to a special assembly at his former primary school (Wickford Primary school) today to give a speech to his former headteacher who was retiring after teaching at the school since 1999. Bolu was the only pupil from his year invited to give a speech at this special occasion. A great Anglo ambassador!

Mr Beedell's conundrum:

What comes next in this sequence: 1, 2, 2, 3, 2, 4, 2, 4? The solution will be revealed in the next bulletin. Students can submit their answer on paper with their name and form to the Maths Office, on first floor of M block. _____________________________________________________ Solution to the last conundrum: In the song "The 12 Days of Christmas" the true love gives many presents. How many did they give in total? How many would they give if the song was called "The 'n' Days of Christmas"? 364 presents; for 'The n Days of Christmas' they would give n(n+1)(n+2) divided by 6 presents

Firstly Happy New Year to everyone, and I hope that you had a relaxing break. The start of the academic year is always a busy one and a time to focus key skills and planning. The Upper Sixth are now well into their exams which will be their final chance to test their exam technique before their public examinations later in the year. The Lower Sixth, during this half term, will also have their first taste of unseen examinations with mini-PPEs taking place within classes. We wish both cohorts the best of luck and I’m sure that their hard work and preparation will pay off. With regard to planning for the future, can I remind Lower Sixth parents and students to make sure that they have organised their work experience placements in March as soon as possible and to use the online portal for consent and employer introduction forms by Friday 24th January. This is an important term to consolidate and build upon previous learning as well as planning for the future, therefore we encourage all of our students to make the most of this valuable time. Mr Newton, Director of Sixth Form

Year 11 World of Work Day (WOW)

Friday 24th January 2020

Advance notice… On Friday 24th January, Year 11 will have the opportunity to participate in a World of Work Day during which they will experience a mock job interview and take part in various Employability Skills Workshops. The purpose of the day is to give our students an insight into the skills and attitudes required for the world of work and to allow them the opportunity to develop, practise and demonstrate these in a familiar environment. Students should attend this day in smart “business dress”. In preparation for WOW students have been writing a CV in their citizenship lessons which needs to be given in to their citizenship teacher if not already done so.
