    LUKE 2:41-52 (NIV)

41Every year his parents went to Jerusalem

for the Feast of the Passover. 42When he

was twelve years old, they went up to the

Feast, according to the custom. 43Aer

the Feast was over, while his parents were

returning home, the boy Jesus stayedbehind in Jerusalem, but they were

unaware of it. 44Thinking he was in their

company, they traveled on for a day. Then

they began looking for him among their

relaves and friends.45When they did not

nd him, they went back to Jerusalem tolook for him. 46Aer three days they found

him in the temple courts, sing among

the teachers, listening to them and asking

them quesons. 47Everyone who heard him

was amazed at his understanding and his

answers. 48When his parents saw him, they

were astonished. His mother said to him,Son, why have you treated us like this? Your

father and I have been anxiously searching

for you. 49Why were you searching for

me? he asked. Didnt you know I had

to be in my Fathers house? 50But they

did not understand what he was saying tothem. 51Then he went down to Nazareth

with them and was obedient to them. But

his mother treasured all these things in

her heart. 52And Jesus grew in wisdom and

stature, and in favor with God and men.

Verse 1Joy to the world! The Lord is come,

    Let earth receive her King.

Let every heart prepare Him room,

And heaven and nature sing,And heaven and nature sing,

And heaven and heaven and nature sing.

Verse 2Joy to the world, the Savior reigns,

Let men their songs employ,While elds and oods,

    Rocks, hills and plains,

    Repeat the sounding joy,

    Repeat the sounding joy,

    Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

Verse 3He rules the world with truth and grace,

    And makes the naons prove,

    The glories of His righteousness,

    And wonders of his love,

And wonders of his love,And wonders, and wonders of his love.

WHAT DO YOU REALLY WANT FOR CHRISTMAS?

    TIDINGS OF JOY

How excing it is to receive good news! Shepherds were going about their regular

work, when suddenly an angel appeared and told them, Behold, I bring you good

dings of great joy which shall be to all people. (Luke 2:10) These words, dings

of joy, are full of life and full of meaning. Think of joy coming in both dings anddes. It comes with a great movement like the swelling of water on a seacoast. It

is renewed again and again, day aer day. Tidings of joy! Christmas brings us the

good news, not only of the coming of God to people in Bethlehem, but to all people

everywhere and in every me. An age old truth is reborn here in a new and dierent

way. The God, who called the world into being, is a living God, an acve presence

in our midst, sll creang life and light. Like the des, Gods goodness overows atmes, while seeming to recede in others. But always love is near.

What does all this mean in our modern age? Jesus coming reminds us that the

God, who breathed life into all of us, is a loving, caring God. Gods creavity did not

stop aer life began. God is an abiding presence, a sustaining presence, a spirit that

constantly seeks good for us. We might compare it to the way in which children growand ourish, when they feel supported and cared for by loving parents. Like a good

father or mother, God faithfully sustains us. Christmas reminds us that Gods gi of

presence, reassurance and love is reborn every day.

Christmas dings of joy! Tradionally, Advent begins a new year. The day of

Christmas comes shortly before the beginning of a new calendar year. It is in theseason when daylight increases each day. Good news! In the midst of winter,

whether the winter of the year or a winter in our souls, God comes to us anew. Glad

dings! There is a love, a powerful force in our midst to strengthen and renew our

lives. May Joy to the World bring this sustaining joy to you!

    Deacons In Training

Class of 2012 Candidates for Ordinaon

    James Allen, Jr.

James has been a member for 12 years. This walk, this journey has taken me to some of the highest and

lowest points of my life and some places that I never thought my heart and spirit would be. During the high

moments, Gods presence shined brightly in my face. I thanked Him for a clarity that I had never experienced

in my life. I [also] saw some places that I denitely wouldnt have put myself in nor had the endurance and

power to get myself out. It was during those mes that He shined brightly as wellI have truly opened upmy mind, heart and spirit to God. Favorite Scripture: Mahew 11:28-30.

    Dion P. Fleming

Dion has been a member for 5 years. God has kept me close, and seen me through a spiritually rich and

fullling life. Although I have been challenged by many trials and tribulaons, I am certain only He alone

could get me through them all. My deacon walk has prepared me for a higher level of commitment to

the model exemplied by Jesus in service as an ordained deacon This deacon walk has prepared me forreasonable service for Gods people. Favorite Scripture: Isaiah 61:1-4.

    Regena Glenn-Caldwell

Regena has been a member for 23 years. The Deacon Walk has been a humbling experience for which I

am truly grateful. For many years, I have struggled with knowing that God was speaking to me to serve in

a greater capacity God connued to place people in my path to remind me of my purpose. I am thankful

that he aorded me this opportunity to serve his people with compassion. The part of the Walk that has

blessed me most has been vising the sick and shut in members and [comforng] bereaved families. I

thank God for this awesome journey and look forward to serving as he has ordained. Favorite Scriptures:

    Proverbs 3:5-6 and Philippians 4:13.

    Bill Glover

Bill has been a member for 9 years. I was taught in my early years to always look out for others. This walk

unexpectedly adds to what Ive tried to do throughout my days. Ive learned so much more about God, and I

came to realize that this is a lifelong process. This walk has made me want to be as close to God as possible, assuring me to know that Im walking in the Spirit. To me that is so important. Favorite Scripture: Romans

    12:1-2.

    Michael Heard

Michael has been a member for 10 years. My walk has been a humbling, learning, soul searching, spirit

lled and enriching experience. Visits to sick and shut in have taught me, rst, be grateful for what God has

done for me, second, know that Gods Word is powerful and prayer is powerful, lastly, God can use me. Iam appreciave of all that have helped me; the coordinators, my walking deacons, my DIT team, and the

deacons who have taken an interest in helping me grow by encouraging me and giving me sound advice.

Most importantly I thank God for pung all of these people in my path along this walk. Favorite Scripture:Romans 8:31 and Galaans 5:22-24.

    Martha Madkins

Martha has been a member for 7 years. My walk started with a queson: Why was I selected to be part

of this great journey? I decided not to try and answer but to respond to the call. The walk has been one of

humility, spiritual enhancement, fear, observaon, and paence. As I visit the sick, aend funerals, respond

to the needs of the congregaon, and support the vision of the pastor I am humbled. Paence, which issomething I struggle with, has become one of my strengths. Finally, the walk has allowed me to become

more observant of what we do as a body of Christ, how we worship, pray and how we embrace the Holy

Spirit. My walk is ongoing as I [now] ask: What must I do to become a beer servant? Favorite Scriptures:

    Mahew 5:16 and Hebrews 11:16.

    Ken McKay

Ken has been a member for 19 years. The deacon walk has meant the answering of a call long overdue.

It speaks to the paence and persistence of God in my life. God kept calling even when I did not answer.

Im grateful for how God moved me in spite of me. It has been a growing experience that involved ups and

downs, challenges and triumphs both personally and professionally. It has been a classic example of how

Gods servants are not immune to the issues of life. Our African ancestors walked with God. I am because

they were and because they were I am! I praise God to whom All blessings ow. Favorite Scripture:

    Mahew 6:33.

Deborah Turner McKissicDeborah has been a member for 13 years. I am eternally grateful that God found me worthy with all of

my imperfecons, failures and shortcomings. This has truly been a walk of humility, gratude and unselsh

love. This has been a life-saving, life changing and life transforming experience. I was missing something

that the world could not give me. God set me apart from people, places and things that would hinder

me seeking God in the most open, honest and authenc encounter I could have with Him. In doing so,

I found peace, joy, love and reassurance. Finally, I thank God for choosing me and that I could be found

trustworthy to serve faithfully as a Deacon. Favorite Scripture: I Corinthians 15:58.

    Janet Merrills

Janet has been a member for 11 years. The Deacon-In-Training Walk has allowed me to go beyond lip-

service and learn more of what it means to walk the talk when it comes to supporng the congregaon,

the Pastor, and the vision that God has given him for the church. The training process has underscored the

need to approach service, and all interacons with others, with clear intenonality on giving glory to God,

and sharing the love of God. This special me has provided a unique opportunity to take spiritual lessons

learned over the years, apply them to a variety of experiences, receive ongoing revelaons for connuousgrowth, and pracce thankfulness more consciously. Favorite Scripture: Romans 8:28.

    George Michael Outlaw

George has been a member for 17 years. Three years ago I asked God whats next for me in my Chrisan

walk. Gods answer was to Humble yourself and serve my people! Answering Gods call, at rst, was dicult.

I did not want to change. I was convinced that I can have it both ways - serve Gods people and sll be the

same person. Boy was I wrong! Its about obeying God and the calling hes placed on my life. My deepest

feelings of love were revealed to me as a result of this Walk. My trust in the Lord through this Walk never

changed, and now I get to serve Gods people. Favorite Scriptures: Proverbs 3:5-6 and Philippians 4:13.

Michael C. PooleMichael has been a member for 24 years. When I rst started down this journey I wasnt really sure what

to expect, but I connued to ask God to show me how to be a good servant and to let me be used by him.

It seemed the more I engaged in this walk the more trouble surrounded me. At one point, I thought about

just leng go and giving this process up. However, six leers two words come to mine; But God!!! I decided

to let go and let God ght my bales. [I believe] that this walk was a test from God. He wanted [me] to see

how much I could bear, and to truly humble me for this mission. To God be the glory for the things He hath

done in my life. I thank my family, and each and every person that has encouraged me to stay on course andnot give up. Favorite Scriptures: Psalm 34:1-3 & Psalm 100:1-5.

    Galyin Rose

Galyin has been a member for 16 years. To be a servant is what I believe in my heart that God has ordained

for me. My mother always said to say thank you when someone does something nice for you and when

given the chance, to return the favor. My calling to this ministry is my way of returning that favor (grace).

Pung God rst has helped me through many dicules. I have gleaned that prayer doesnt mean the

problem will go away, but Ill have greater peace going through it. This walk has given me greater insightto the pressures carried by those in church leadership, including the personal sacrices that many make to

connue to build this branch of Zion on a daily basis. I see the strain this calling can put on families, friends

and loved ones. It is my sincerest desire to ease some of the pressure. My prayer is that God will one day

say Good and faithful servant, well done. Favorite Scripture: Isaiah 6:8.

    Rose E. Sco

Rose has been a member for 10 years. This walk has been an amazing experience. It has not been withouttrials and challenges. But God...has been there strengthening me every step of the way. Humility has been

a key factor in this walk as well. I nd that when I decrease me it allows more room for God to work thru

me. I have learned that it is not about me its about glorifying God. My faith has been strengthened. I am

learning to trust God with everything, not just a few things. I ask God to connue to use me as His servant.

    Diane F. Shannon

Diane has been a member for 7 years. The Deacon Walk was the most educaonal, spiritual, enlighteningand disciplined exercise that I have enjoyed very much. It was educaonal because of the teaching of

scriptures in the bible. Spiritual because the walk allowed me to focus on what God is doing and has done

in my life. The walk enlightened me so that I will be able to minister to the people about God. The discipline

comes from knowing what, when, where, how and why it is important to listen to God and to do His will.

    Favorite Scripture: Psalm 100.

    Melvin R. Thompson

Melvin has been a member for 17 years. The walk itself periodically inspires me to honestly reect on just

what it was or is that supposedly holds me back from giving myself to God completely. The joy of the walk is

realizing what God has in store for me is what I need. I am thankful for the me spent geng to know how

The Lord can use me and how the congregaon and members have received my family and me. This walk

has [also] ministered to me on how I react and respond to lifes trials and tribulaons. God reminded me to

not be anxious about anything. That like my Deacon Walk, my peace comes from serving others. Favorite

    Scripture: Isaiah 54:17.

    Eric G. Towns

Eric has been a member for 11 years. The word transforming would adequately summarize what this

journey has been for and meant to me. Over the last twenty-four months I have developed an even greater

sense of empathy for Gods children and have come to understand that the role of a Deacon in the church

transcends what the Deacon does to include what the Deacon feels. I have experienced Gods sending of

his Deacons to places and requiring of them acts of humility and service that demand that the Deacon be

humble. I have learned that to be of use to Gods people a Deacon must be willing to put the needs of thepeople above the needs of themselves. I am grateful for the transformaon of thought that has occurred

within me as a result of this walk and shall forever be grateful for this revelaon. Favorite Scripture: I

    Corinthians 13:4-7.

    Regina P. Ward

Regina has been a member for 8 years. When I was noed that I had been accepted as a Deacon in

Training, I was lled with excitement and uncertainty. I was excited about where God was taking me and

uncertain about my qualicaons. As my walk progressed, the uncertainty decreased due to the training

that I received, the addional Bible classes that I aended, my personal devoon me, and a lot of prayer.

I slowly came to believe that He qualies those that He calls. I am humbled by the experience because it

has truly strengthened my faith and hope in God as well as my willingness to serve Him and His people. I

know that it is only through His grace that I, who once was hopeless, have been given the honor to carry the

message of hope, in Christ, to His people. Favorite Scripture: Romans 5:1-4.

    Renita Q. Ward

Renita has been a member for 5 years. The Deacon Walk has ensured that the gis God has stored up in

me do not lay latent, unused. Or, worse yet, used, but not toward the Kingdom-building work God has called

each of us to do. It is hard to put into specic words the personal and inmate conversaon I connue to

have with God as I learn more about how to support our pastor and the pastoral sta, and how to help

minister to the people of God and the world beyond the church walls. Paent-endurance comes to mind.

Charity comes to mind. Most of all Jesus Christ, His sacrice, His spreading His arms to die for me His

wondrous love overtakes my mind. That is what this walk has meant to me. I am simply humbled by Gods

rich love for each us. Favorite Scripture: Proverbs 31:11-31.

    Nicole White

Nicole has been a member for 8 years. When I think about what my DIT walk has meant to me, I am

reminded of a sermon Pastor Moss preached on the blessings and burdens of life. On the one hand, this

walk has been a tremendous blessing. Ive had the uer privilege to visit and pray with members who

have enriched my life in ways I never would have imagined. On the other hand, this walk has been a heavy

burden. It is a calling and a mantel that I do not take lightly and one that I probably would not have had thecondence to seek out on my own. But I accepted this call because I believe God wants to take me to a new

level of service and I want my life to have a meaning and purpose beyond what is comfortable and easy. I

am grateful for this journey. This walk will be etched in the memory of my heart for many years to come.

    Favorite Scripture: Romans 8:28.

    Ernest D. Williams

Ernest has been a member for 30 years. When I think of my journey to become a deacon, I think of a

queson one deacon asked me. He asked Are you ready for the walk of your life? At rst I was puzzled. Now, I understand exactly what the deacon meant. Being a deacon is a life of service. Therefore, I have to

be commied to serving God through the good mes and the bad, through my own personal challenges

and even when I feel triumphant. This walk has taught me that there is no privilege or fringe benets to

being a deacon. [Its not about] sing on the front pew, [Its about] being willing to minster to and serve the

sick and comfort and pray for the family of the bereaved. God connues to remind me Whatever I have,

wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am. So, here I am ready to

connue the walk (service) of my life. Favorite Scripture: Philippians 4:13.

    Ed Mason (Ordained Deacon)

Ed was ordained as a deacon at another church prior to joining Trinity 15 years ago. This Deacon Walk has

allowed me to learn the many aspects of servant leadership and ministry that I did not experience before

being ordained in another Church in 1978. Through this two year period, it has beer prepared me to

minister to the spiritual needs of our Church family. Favorite Scripture: Jeremiah 33:3.
