10 AUGUST 2014 19TH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME

To be a Christ-centred family that loves and

serves one another with joy and humility

PARISH GROWTH

As Singapore celebrates her 49th birthday and prepares for the Golden Jubilee of her founding, while at the

same time ponders on her growth potential, we receive two public announcements recently which would

further influence the growth of our Parish in the near future. One was the unveiling of the location of the new

MRT station, Canberra Station (N12). It would serve the new HDB estate Simpang where construction has

started six months ago as well as existing, new and future private housing developments adjacent to or

within walking distance from that MRT station . This includes Canberra Residences and yet-to-be-completed

Nautical; also One Canberra and Eight Courtyards at Yishun. Besides, there is the Springleaf Station to be

built as part of the Thomson Line to serve developments over there.

The other was the release of details of the North Point City which shall be adjacent to the existing

Northpoint. This new ‘integrated’ development shall include a new shopping mall, an air-conditioned public

bus terminal, community club and a 920-unit private housing development called North Park Residences.

These are on top of the other housing projects that have been completed recently such as the additional

HDB blocks at Zone 300 and Zone 400; the Estuary and the Canopy; as well as those whose construction

are underway eg. new HDB blocks at Zone 200, new Zone 500 HDB flats, Nine Residences, Miltonia

Residences, Skies Miltonia; Sky Park Residences at Sembawang Crescent and two plots at the site of the

former Yishun ITE.

Also, there is a new massive private international school at Yishun Ave 6 and a second hospital (Yishun

Community Hospital) to be completed soon.

Thus, such growth of our Parish offers us tremendous opportunities to deepen our roles as ‘living stones’.

Let us continue to evangelize through prayer and building bonds with existing and new parishioners through

our active participation in the NCCs, ministries and other Parish structures.

When we adopt a pastoral goal and a missionary style which would actually reach everyone without exception or exclusion, the message has to concentrate on the essentials, on what is most beautiful, most grand, most appealing and at the same time most necessary. The message is simplified, while losing none of its depth and truth, and thus becomes all the more forceful and convincing.

NCC Reflection

From a brief reflection of Pope Benedict XVI on the Transfiguration, drawn from his last Angelus Address:

“The Evangelist places particular attention on the fact that Jesus was transfigured as He prayed. Meditating on

this Gospel passage, we can draw a very important teaching from it. First of all, the primacy of prayer, without

which the entire commitment of ministry and charity is reduced to activism. Indeed, prayer is not an isolation from

the world and its contradictions. Instead, prayer is what leads us to love in action. The Christian life consists in

continually scaling the mountain to meet God and then coming back down, bearing the love and strength drawn

from Him, so as to serve our brothers and sisters with God’s own love.”
