03 AUGUST 2014 18TH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME

To be a Christ-centred family that loves and

serves one another with joy and humility

Pope Francis Visits to Asia

Pope Francis is preparing to visit South Korea from 13 Aug to 18 Aug 2014 on the occasion of the

Asian Youth Day. Some 50 of our Catholic youths, guided by our two Youth Chaplains, would be there

for this event. In this trip, he would meet the government leaders at the Blue House, which is the official

residence of the President of the Republic of Korea; Catholic lay leaders; priests; bishops and religious

at various locations in South Korea. Certainly, he would also pray with the youth and the rest, for the

conversion of North Korea, peace in the Korean peninsula, reconciliation and healing on the survivors

and families of the victims of the Seoul ferry tragedy.

Also, the Supreme Pontiff would preside at a Mass in Seoul to beatify Paul Yun Ji-Chun and 123

companions who were martyred for their faith in Korea about 150 - 200 years ago.

Most of us know that Pope St John Paul II went to South Korea in 1994 to canonise 103 martyrs. This

time, some of the Blessed-elects are parents and grandparents of many of these 103 saints.

We rejoice with our fellow Korean Catholics on the occasion of Pope Francis’ visit to their country – his

first visit to the Far East - and the recognition of additional spiritual heroes to their heritage.

Let us pray for the good health of our Pope and the safety and comfort of his journeys abroad – he has

just announced plans a few days ago to visit Sri Lanka from 12 -15 Jan 2015 and the Philippines from

15 Jan – 19 Jan 2015, besides trips to other countries.

If we attempt to put all things in a missionary key, this will also affect the way

we communicate the message. In today’s world of instant communication and

occasionally biased media coverage, the message we preach runs a greater

risk of being distorted or reduced to some of its secondary aspects. In this

way certain issues which are part of the Church’s moral teaching are taken

out of the context which gives them their meaning. The biggest problem is

when the message we preach then seems identified with those secondary

aspects which, important as they are, do not in and of themselves convey the

heart of Christ’s message. We need to be realistic and not assume that our

audience understands the full background to what we are saying, or is

capable of relating what we say to the very heart of the Gospel which gives it

meaning, beauty and attractiveness.

NCC Reflection

"God is love, and he who abides in love, abides in God and God in Him". But, God pours out his love into our hearts through

the Holy Spirit, Who has been given to us; thus the first and most necessary gift is love, by which we love God above all

things and our neighbour because of God. Indeed, in order that love, as good seed, may grow and bring forth fruit in the soul,

each one of the faithful must willingly hear the Word of God and accept His Will, and must complete what God has begun by

their own actions with the help of God's grace. These actions consist in the use of the sacraments and in a special way the

Eucharist, frequent participation in the sacred action of the Liturgy, application of oneself to prayer, self-renunciation, lively

fraternal service and the constant exercise of all the virtues. For charity, as the bond of perfection and the fullness of the

law, rules over all the means of attaining holiness and gives life to these same means. It is charity which guides us

to our final end. It is the love of God and the love of one's neighbour which points out the true disciple of Christ.
