Red Ribbon Week is by far
the largest and oldest drug
prevention campaign in the
country, and one of the
most effective for prevent-
ing drug use among youth.
Red Ribbon Week empow-
ers communities and indi-
viduals across the U.S., es-
pecially youth, to take a
stand for, and make a real
commitment to, drug pre-
vention and education.
Students in nearly every
U.S. school will make a per-
sonal commitment to drug-
free living, and to the ulti-
mate goal of drug-free
America.
Burr will be celebrating
Red Ribbon Week during
the last 2 weeks of Octo-
ber (October 25th—31st).
Our activities will be ele-
mentary age appropriate
and include healthy life
choices in the areas of
nutrition, hygiene, smok-
ing, etc. There will be
spirit days throughout the
week to celebrate Bull-
dogs taking care of their
bodies and minds.

Parent Corner— Halloween Safety
BOOO! (No Boo-Hoo)
Imagination and wonderful,
wacky ideas are everywhere
during this season as ghosts,
goblins, astronauts, ballerinas
and cartoon characters celebrate
Halloween. Unfortunately, some
of the best parts of Halloween –
from carving the pumpkin to
traipsing around in the dark –
are also the most dangerous.
Keep your children safe this
year. Here are some of the
dangers – and ways to avoid
them:
Falls
Paint that face! It’s safer than a
mask and more fun too.
Make costumes short. Don’t
hike up long skirts – cut them off
for safety.
Secure hats so they will not slip
over children’s eyes.
Wear shoes that fit. Children
should never wear mom’s high
heels or dad’s boots.
Stay on the sidewalk. Don’t cut
through yards.
Pedestrian Injuries
Decorate costumes, bags and
sacks with reflective tape or
paints. Use Halloween costumes
that are light or bright enough to
be seen at night.
Never let young children go trick-
or-treating without an adult.
Remind children to stop, look
left, right, and then left again
before crossing any street.
Burns
Look for “Flame Resistant”
labels on costumes, masks,
beards and wigs.
Use fire resistant material for all
homemade costumes.
Avoid costumes made out of
flimsy material and outfits with
big baggy sleeves or billowing
skirts.
Common Sense Tips
Only give and accept wrapped or
packaged candy.
Go trick-or-treating before it gets
too dark.
Avoid hard plastic or wood props
such as swords or wands.
Drive and walk with extreme care
on October 31.
Do all you can to protect our
children. We don’t have a single
one to spare!
Bulldog Costume Parade
The annual Bulldog Costume
Parade is on Tuesday, October
31st, at 11:00 A.M. (this is a half
day of school). We will have a
school-wide parade around the
outside of the school (weather
permitting) or throughout the
inside of the building if it rains.
Parents are welcome to watch
the parade on route and we
would love some parent
volunteers to join us. Student
costumes may have to be slightly
modified as no full face painting
or masks are allowed in school
for safety reasons. Students are
not allowed to bring toy daggers,
swords, pitchforks, and other
sharp objects or weapons to
school as part of their costume.
For safety reasons, they will not
be allowed to carry props in the
parade. We can all have fun
and use our imaginations
without scaring our youngest
bulldogs.

Parking Lot Update:
Parents are encouraged
to park in the church
parking lot next door to
Burr. There is a gate to
walk directly onto our
play pad to walk around
for drop-off or pick-up.
This will reduce the
amount of traffic in the
main lot and allow eve-
ryone to exit and enter
more swiftly.
Thank you for driving
SLOWLY in the lot to
maintain student safe-
ty.
Everyone’s time is of
equal value. Therefore,
when parents are run-
ning late and want to
create their own park-
ing spot (as opposed to
an identified parking
spot), this will create
hard feelings between
those who follow the
parking lot rules and
those who do not. Of-
ten times parents go
extra lengths to arrive
early for a spot only to
see someone else ar-
rive right at dismissal
and park on the grass
or block the U driveway.
On occasion a car or
two has even blocked in
other vehicles by park-
ing behind them. We
are one school family
with one lot that is too
small for our needs.
Thankfully, the church
next door has warmly
welcomed our families
to park there for addi-
tional parking. If park-
ing is our biggest chal-
lenge at Burr, what a
wonderful school this is
for all of us! Since we
have no land to expand
our parking lot, let’s
agree to only park in
official spaces in our lot
or the Church lot, and
to be patient. Our stu-
dents will follow their
parents’ example. Let’s
make sure we model
for them that patience,
safety, and rule follow-
ing are important val-
ues for our families,
schools, and communi-
ties.
We so appreciate our
Burr families and your
commitment to student
safety even when you
are in a hurry.
Lunch Room Upgrades
November 8 - November
10 (date change), our
gym and lunchroom will
be closed for upgrades.
Brand new lunch tables
and benches will be in-
stalled into the walls of
the gym! For these three
days lunch will be served
in classrooms. Our stu-
dents with food allergies
will dine in our confer-
ence room with our med-
ical aide, Mrs. Jill. This
short term inconven-
ience will result in long
term upgrades!
