SOFIACultural programme Sofia is the capital and the largest city in Bulgaria.http://sofiacityhotel.com/bg/за-софия/

It is the 15th largest city in the European Union, with a population of 1 307 376 (as of 15.06.2016). Sofia is situated in the central part of Western Bulgaria, in the Sofia Valley and is surrounded by mountains: Vitosha to the South, Lyulin to the West and Stara Planina to the North and its altitude is between 500 and 699 m. This makes it the fourth highest capital in Europe.

Sofia is one of the oldest European capitals. Its history can be traced back to Neolithic times. Traces of several Neolithic settlements have been found on its territory (around today’s Palace, as well as in today’s Slatina district), dating back to 5000 BC.

The city fell under Roman rule in the year 29. During the reign of Emperor Mark Ullius Trajan (98-117), Serdika, lying on the Roman Via Via Militaris, flourished as a significant settlement in the province of Thrace. Elected after 106 years in the rank of municipium, he gained self-government and became the center of an administrative district. The city grew to Mark Aurelius (161-180) and Imp. Comodo (176-192), between 176 and 180, is forti-fied with an impressive fortress wall, observation towers, in the 2nd century the hot mineral spring is captured and the city baths, administrative and other representative buildings are erected.

Since the second half of the 3rd century the importance of the city has increased a lot. Although the Gothic invasions of 271 did not passed it, it was preferred to Nis and become the capital of the vast Roman province of Dacia Aureliana, formed in Upper Moesia by Emperor Aurelian. During the administrative reform of 285, Diocletian Serdika became the capital of the newly established Provinces of Dacian.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, on April 9, 809 - Easter, Khan Krum joined Serdika and the city became part of the Bulgarian state.

The motto of the capital is “Grows but never ages.”

An invitation will be sent to all registered participants with detailed information on the planned cultural events and projects.
