WaterfrontResurgent after too many years in the doldrums, Liverpool’s Waterfront really is world-class. With the new extension to the Leeds/Liverpool canal scything through the Pier Head, the jaunty new Museum of Liverpool, the scrubbed up Three Graces (the triptych of grand buildings of which the Liver Building is best known) and the handsome huddle of warehouses making up the Albert Dock, the city has returned to the river in style. The Dock’s museums and galleries, bars and restaurants can easily fill a half day’s exploration and, should you itch to get closer to the water you’ve a few options: you can take a ‘ferry ‘cross the Mersey’ or try your hand at canoeing (or a range of other watersports) at the Watersports Centre. Further south, the promenade walk of Riverside Drive offers great river views all the way to the pretty Festival Gardens.

Three exemplar houses have been designed and constructed at the Byrom Street campus, to provide a dynamic, site-based research facility for the construction and housing sectors. The dwellings provide realistic test facilities and R&D capabilities for the development and application of a range of carbon reducing, environmental monitoring and intervention technologies needed most by today’s housing sector.

Working in partnership with the BRE Innovation Park Network, we aim to provide a testing and development facility to assess the efficacy of technological innovations aimed at reducing energy consumption, measuring and improving other environmental quality factors and devising accurate, non-invasive measurement and monitoring techniques. Promoting this approach will inform future thinking on how the UK tackles the refurbishment challenge.

SARAH BUXBAUM Real Estate

“I enjoy contributing to the development of the next generation of real estate professionals. My key purpose is to ensure the MSc curriculum embeds core surveying elements and reflects developing trends, so graduates enter the profession with the practical and professional skills required for a challenging and dynamic career in the property sector.”

Coming from a retail management background, Sarah qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in 1989. She spent the next 20 years working for a government agency specialising in the valuation of property for public sector organisations and also for taxation purposes. Her roles included working for a specialist team responsible for a wide variety of retail properties. She latterly provided technical support to offices across the North West of England.

Sarah joined LJMU full-time in 2009, having taught on a part-time basis since 2000. Her interest in the historic built environment led to the completion of a postgraduate qualification in building conservation and subsequent appointment as lead author for an RICS paper which combined both her conservation and valuation specialisms.

STEVEN FOWLES“I enjoy working with diverse and engaging students who are passionate about a career in the built environment. I like working with industry and academic leaders around the world to deliver cutting edge research projects that influence industry best practice and feed directly into teaching materials.”

Highly experienced in teaching and programme management, Steven leads an experienced team who combine research activity with practitioner experience to deliver postgraduate degrees in the disciplines of Commercial Building Surveying, Facilities Management and Architectural Engineering.

Steven is a Chartered Town Planner and contributes to linking education with professional practice via both his work for professional bodies, and through acting as external advisor for Universities.  His research interests cover urban regeneration and smart cities, sustainability and built environment education research, with particular regard to the links between enterprise and education.

Following his undergraduate degree in Architecture, Design and Technology, Mohammed Shabuo moved to LJMU to study for a masters in Architectural Engineering.

“I chose LJMU because of the reputation the School has in industry and the opportunities it provides for students.

I was expecting postgraduate study to be challenging and it hasn’t failed to meet those expectations. You need to be able to work independently, research different

topics and manage your own time.

The highlight of the programme for me has been the opportunity to work on a real life project with students from other disciplines. This has really helped to develop our teamworking skills.

My programme has been really well structured and has enabled us to resolve the kind of technical and sustainable challenges we will come up against in industry. Teaching at LJMU reflects the real world and benefits from highly qualified,

helpful lecturers and library staff.

As a university, LJMU will give you that edge in industry, whilst masters level study will enable you to develop skills that are very important in the professional environment, preparing you to start your career.

Liverpool is a vibrant city with a diverse population and a growing economy so, for students looking to establish a professional career, this really is the right place to be.”

Following an undergraduate degree in Design and Technology with Education, Michael Rawsthorne lectured in Mechanical Engineering for a couple of years before returning to education to study for a masters in Project Management.

“My postgraduate programme is well linked to industry and I have gained a great deal from it. Although it has been challenging, the programme has been well planned to ensure that we have one assignment at a time and there is space between modules.

I particularly enjoyed the module which involved us working as a team, allocating specific roles and applying our learning in an industry context. It was great to use project management software and be marked on our performance as if we were in the workplace.

The support on offer at LJMU has been excellent. We have always had someone to turn to and there has been a very clear explanation of what was expected of us. Any queries have been dealt with within 24 hours. Our academic staff have been

brilliant - they really couldn’t have been any better.

If you are considering postgraduate study, John Moores is a great University and I would definitely advise you to consider it. Course costs are reasonable and the service provided is good. If I had it to do over again, I couldn’t think of a single reason that would make me go elsewhere.”
