YQCA certification (formally known as FSQA) is being accepted by many livestock shows and fairs that require

youth quality assurance certification. YQCA includes information for youth showing the following food ani-

mals:

• Pigs

• Beef Cattle

• Dairy Cattle

• Sheep

• Goats

• Market Rabbits

• Poultry

*IMPORTANT APRIL YQCA UPDATE: Mike Anderson, State 4-H Livestock Program Specialist, has been working closely with YQCA representatives. He recently informed County Extension Offices of the following: “In light of cancelled face to face YQCA trainings across the state due to the coronavirus, YQCA is offering a “Flash Sale” for the web-based training from April 1 – April 30, 2020. What does this mean? During the month of April, staff or families can go to the Iowa 4-H YQCA website, https://

www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/yqca , and print off the coupon order form • This will purchase the $12/person online web-based training for a reduced rate of $9/person • The coupon order form must be filled out and mailed in with a check payment – this offer will not allow

the use of a credit card payment • YQCA will then issue the coupon code to purchase the online course • If counties or youth purchased coupons for the face to face trainings ($3/person fee), those coupons will

not work for the $3 reduced rate for the online training • If youth need to cancel a face to face training that was cancelled, they can log in to their YQCA account,

cancel the registration, and that coupon becomes active again to use for a later face to face training • If youth need to cancel a future training (that might also have to be cancelled), they can also get their

coupon re-credited for a later face to face training • Steps are listed in the documents on the YQCA website • Counties are still welcome to try and schedule face to face YQCA trainings for later this spring – even

those end up having to be cancelled A “Memo to Families” is included in this newsletter as well as the Flash Sale Coupon Form. These documents and an “Instructions for Youth: Getting Your Online Certification” instruction sheet is also available at the Io-wa 4-H YQCA website, https://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/yqca ,

After April 30th, YQCA will re-evaluate any further decisions for YQCA certification.”

The Broiler Project is an opportunity for a 4-H or FFA member to gain valuable experience in raising chicks to

broiler weight. Members are partnered with a local business or individual sponsors who pays for the chicks.

The 4-H or FFA member may choose to raise 25 or 50 birds. There is an option for families to share 50 or

more birds. Participants will present the best 3 dressed birds (per 25 sponsored) to the sponsor as payment

for the opportunity to participate in this project. The sponsor will only pay for the chicks while the member is

responsible for all other items necessary to raise the chicks (feed, shelter, etc.) and to process the birds.

The project participant is required to communicate with the sponsor about the birds throughout the project.

One week after fair, the processed birds must be delivered to the sponsor. Processing can be done

professionally or by the 4-H/FFA member. Extension is currently looking into processing options for you;

more details to come. If you are not able to process within one week after fair, deadline to deliver birds to

the sponsor is August 15. If this is not done, 4-H/FFA member must reimburse the sponsor the amount the

sponsor paid for the birds.

• You do not need to be enrolled in a poultry project area to participate. Completed entry forms are due in

the Extension office by 4:30 pm on Friday, April 17.

• The broilers must be picked up from the Extension office on Wednesday, May 20 from 4:00 pm-6:30 pm.

• Once we have all of the entry forms, the Extension office will send out request forms for sponsors. After

all of the participants have a sponsor, a letter will be sent out informing the participants who their

sponsor is.

All County Fair Weigh-Ins Canceled

March 26, 2020

To: 4-H Livestock Exhibitors

From: Iowa State University Extension & Outreach 4-H Youth

Re: Livestock Identification Deadlines and County Weigh-ins

On behalf of the Iowa 4-H Program and considering the current and

ongoing situation regarding the COVID-19 virus, adjustments are

being made to this year’s livestock identification process and county

weigh-ins. We have been in contact with our partners: FFA, State

Fair, and Iowa Association of Fairs to make sure we are all on the

same page.

• As of today, all county weigh-ins for meat goats, sheep and/or

swine are to be cancelled. This is for the health and safety of

our 4-H families and staff. Unfortunately, that means fairs that

conduct rate of gain contests will not be able to do so for the

2020 fair season. For those counties who’ve already had their

weigh-in this spring, those contests could still occur.

• The May 15 livestock ID deadline will be moved back to June

1. This applies to ALL livestock that are usually identified by May

15 including: Breeding Beef, Dairy Cattle, Dairy Goat, Dog,

Horse, Meat Goat, Poultry, Sheep and Swine. Rabbits will remain

at the July 1 deadline.

• Tagging Procedures – we are asking county extension offices to

work with families to obtain official 4-H ear tags, or if county

staff are comfortable could set up on-farm tagging. We are not

requiring counties to do that latter, it’s just another option. Any

process that is utilized should keep in mind good biosecurity

practices and measures for people and animals. Additionally,

for Identification purposes, we are asking all tagged animals be

documented by photo that is uploaded to 4-H Online. Process

will be outlined in the FAQs mentioned below.

• Retinal Imaging – since 4-H sheep and meat goats are required

to have retinal images collected for State Fair eligibility, we are

hopeful that adding two weeks to the ID deadline will allow staff

to collect those images, perhaps on the farm or if circumstances

improve and social distancing is less of a concern, those animals

could come to a central site for image collection after May 9.

• FAQ available here.

Process for tagging 4-H

livestock at the 2020

Buchanan County Fair:

1) Call the Buchanan County Extension

Office and request tags for Breeding

and Bucket Bottle Calves, Meat

Goats, Sheep and Swine.

2) Cattle have larger eartags. For all

other types of livestock the tag size

is the same. Swine planning to be

shown at the State Fair also require

to have a separate DNA tag. When

you call let us know how many tags

you need for which species.

3) Mail payment for tags.

4) Upon receipt of payment, the Exten-

sion Office will call you back and let

you know your tags are available for

pick up in a tub outside the building.

If you need to borrow a tagger, let

us know and we include it in your

ziplock bag of tags.

5) Return taggers within 24 hours.

6) Once the eartag is placed, take pic-

tures of your livestock where

eartags are readable. You will need

to know whether the tag is in the

left ear or the right ear when you

upload them into 4-H online.

7) Pick up tote will be disinfected daily.

Meet Alexa Riniker 2019 Buchanan County Fair Queen Hello everyone! My name

is Alexa Riniker and I am

the 2019 Buchanan Coun-

ty Fair Queen. I am from

Winthrop and I am cur-

rently a senior at East

Buchanan High School.

Next year, I will be

attending the University

of Northern Iowa and

studying Elementary Education!

It is a pleasure to be representing this outstanding county

and fair. The position of fair queen has brought so many

amazing opportunities my way, some of which I wouldn't

trade for anything! When I was crowned last summer I im-

mediately started my duties as fair queen. I assisted wher-

ever I could on the fairgrounds, handing out trophies at

the 4-H and FFA shows or riding in the pace car to start the

races!

A few weeks later I had a once in a lifetime opportunity of

attending Queen's Week at the Iowa State Fair with 102

other county queens. I met some amazing girls and built

friendships that will last a lifetime! I also got to volunteer

on the fairgrounds and talk to hundreds of fair goers. It

was my favorite week of the summer! Becoming fair

queen is more than wearing a beautiful crown and a sash,

it is the chance to represent our county while becoming a

better leader and advocate for the next generation. I am

beyond grateful to have earned this title!
