We had a great meeting at Max Dale’s on January 23rd. The food was great and the camaraderie was exceptional. We saw new faces and many we hadn’t seen for some time. Of course, the program for the evening was PCI compliance for those businesses that take credit card payments. As always, the evening started out with networking and just catching up. I heard a good amount of business being talked about during this time so I’m hoping the networking opportunity was well worth coming as well.
President Jay Roberts started the meeting in the normal fashion and welcomed new members and members who were attending for the first time. Then there were announcements from staff for upcoming events and opportunities to
get involved in SICBA and to meet other members. We then did two drawings and the winner of the renewal drawing was Crawford Garage Doors and they will get a free admission to the next member mixer at NW Granite and Flooring in Oak Harbor on February 13th. (Click Here) The Membership Bonus Drawing would have gone to Building Specialties Inc. but they weren’t at the meeting so the pot will grow another $50 for the February 13th meeting to $850 but the company must be present to win.
Jay turned the mic over to Adrian Santangelo of Interpreting Technology for the evening program. Everyone who attended appeared very interested in the information and it was nice to know that the deadline to comply has been kicked down the road for us until June 1. This compliance is not mandated by the government but is a combination of the different credit card companies combining efforts to cause more control over cards that have been issued and to cut down on credit card fraud. After this goes into effect, companies that take cards that are found out of compliance with the new PCI requirements could be on the hook if a card is misused and/or can be fined if they are audited by one of the designated companies who can do the audits. The other thing that is interesting is the FBI has been brought into this circle to do the investigations. So it is far reaching in every way. There will be more information as we move forward so stay tuned.
We then conducted the 50/50 drawing and John Voth of Peoples Bank was the lucky winner of the pot. Remember the next event is February 13 at NW Granite and Flooring in Oak Harbor. (Click Here) We look
forward to seeing you all there. Back to top
COMMITTEE REPORTS Marketing Committee Chair is Topher Ruxton We have partnered with Skagit Breaking and our Find A Pro will be linking on their website and promoted on their website and social media pages. We will be sharing our “funny” videos with them to promote the Find A Pro section of their site and our site. We are looking forward to implementing some new marketing strategies for SICBA in 2018 and hope you will join our committee as more creative minds are always welcome! Our next meeting in February 15th at noon at the SICBA office and pizza is provided.
Golf Committee Chair is Scott Rainwater The first golf meeting of the year will be February 8th at 3pm at the SICBA office! We invite all SICBA Members interested in planning this event to attend! We are a FUN committee!
Membership Committee Chair is Roy Mureno Happy Groundhog Day from the Membership Committee! We’re gearing up for our Spring Membership Drive – the theme will be Run for the Roses! The Spring Drive month is April, and any member who recruits 2 new members between January 1 and April 30 will qualify for the Spring Rewards trip: VIP Day at the Races, June 9th at Emerald Downs! Don’t pass up this opportunity – ask your business partners, “are you a member of SICBA?” If they say “no” -- ASK THEM TO JOIN! A big thank you to Builders Insurance Group for their sponsorship of this event – there’s still time to join them and go on this trip as a sponsor or as a recruiter! Call the SICBA office if you are interested in being the transportation sponsor. To help you reach your recruiting goals, the Membership Committee is holding a February Friendraiser at Bastion Brewery in Anacortes on February 22nd, from 5 to 6:30 pm. Your friends make the best members, so bring a potential new member to network and learn about the benefits of membership at this Friendraiser. RSVP by February 15th and get a free drink ticket for you and your guest! Have a great February, and remember an association is as strong as its members – let’s grow our association and support the industry that supports us!
Home Show committee Chair is Dave Hillman Home & Garden Show: We are only a month and a half away from the 38th Annual Home & Garden Show and there are only a handful of booths remaining! If you want to get your business in front of over 3,000 people, then this is the event for you! We also have opportunities to sponsor and volunteer at the event and we need all SICBA Member hands on deck to pull off this event. Visit www.SICBAHomeShow.com or call Lianna at 360-488-4079 for details. Our next meeting is February 15th at 7:30am at the SICBA office.
Home Tour Committee Chair is Curtis Banta The Home Tour Committee will meet for the first time this year to plan the 2018 Home Tour, on February 20th at 3pm at the SICBA Office! This is a fun event to plan and our committee only meets 8 months out of the year, once a month. We encourage you to come join the committee and help us plan this fun September event.
Events Committee
Chair is Kim Piazza Happy Birthday to Lianna from the Events Committee! Events Committee had a great first meeting in January. Blake, from LaborMax, joined the committee and it was great to brainstorm new ideas! Look for some exciting events coming your way this year. The Events Committee meets again on March 6th at noon! STOCK MARKET ACTIVITY The recent dive the stock market took isn’t something to really worry about. “Stay the course” is what I am getting from every financial advisor I have spoken with. When there is a “Bull Market” it is common for it to make a correction and then come back –possibly not to the same height in a very short time but will come back with steady increases over the long run. Economists say this seemed to be a greater correction because we have gone for so long with never before imagined increases without any checks in the market. Another thing to remember is whatever your investments in the stock market are, they are just paper. Until the assets are sold off, there is no gain and no loss of value. So, if you have any questions, don’t just jump out there and make a mistake that could affect your future retirement, etc. Contact one of our SICBA Member Financial Advisors with any questions and if you don’t currently have any investments, it might be a good time to consider doing so for your future.
