BEING RESILIENT IS YOUR CHOICE
Brexit Brexit Brexit . It is dominat ing so much of our
news and lives at the moment. And causing
considerable st ress as people and companies feel
uncertain about the future, what will be possible,
what will be allowed.
It seems to be impact ing on all our lives. And we are
all responding dif ferent ly. Some of us are
immersing ourselves in every detail of the Brexit
process, unable to turn off or tune out of the news
feeds. Others are skipping those pages, delet ing the
alerts. Seven MPs recent ly dealt w ith the

And uncertainty in your business and personal li fe
can also cause st ress. What can make us feel bet ter,
reduce the st ress and increase our resilience?
Here are three ideas:

Emot ional intelligence is def ined as the abili ty to ident ify
and manage our emot ions (and those of others) . It is a
choice, a discipline, and can be developed. I have been
working on it since I became a business coach. The benef it
is that i f you are tuned into your emot ions and responses,
you are more aware of the t riggers and f lashpoints of the
negat ive things in your li fe. And you are also aware of the
st rategies that help you to be more resilient and m inim ise
your st ress.
So my resilience st rategies include walking my dog Colin,
or summer swimming in the sea .

The best way to explain the next step to
resilience is to describe an everyday
situat ion. Picture the scene, the skies are
dark, the rain has started coming down in
stair rods (as my Mum used to say). There
is nothing you can do about the weather,
that is totally outside your control. And as
you can see from the chart below, things
that lie outside your control are the sources
of f rustrat ion, anger and st ress.
But if you can f ind something that you can
inf luence and control in that situat ion, you
can act ivate and move forward. So if i t is
pouring with rain, which is outside your
control, the really obvious opt ions that are in
your control are to? .
1. Get wet
2. Put up an umbrella
3. Put on a mac
4. Go inside
5. Stand under a porch
6. Change your at t i tude to rain

work, deal w ith the boss dif ferent ly. In

our control and the big key to building your
resilience is to f ind what is w ithin your
control and use it .

M AKING CHOICES ON PACE
This is just like the Goldilocks story. One
opt ion is too big and fast , one opt ion is too
small and slow and one opt ion is just right to
improve your resilience.
CHOICE ONE is to fast pace everything you
do, by constant ly accelerat ing your work
plan, and not looking up. You are making
that fast pace choice in everything you do.
This can feel excit ing, but the elast ic is
overst retched and if the pace is maintained,
leads to a drop in performance, as super
st ress levels and burn out kick in.
CHOICE TWO involves gent le cruising. Not
st retching yourself , taking it easy. Sounds
good in some ways and as a holiday mode
can be very healthy. But i f i t is your normal
way of working, mot ivat ion disappears, so
doing a good job is not important , indeed
nothing is very important . As a result ,
performance will drop and you will be less
resilient and less fulf i lled.
CHOICE THREE is a series of sprints and
refreshers; work at a fast pace to achieve
specif ic object ives and goals, and then dial
back to refresh your energy. Look up and
talk to people, think about the overall goals,
and the big picture
We recommend CHOICE THREE as the best
way to maintain resilience, and build
