Title: MY HOUSTON’S CHRONICLE VOCABULARY BOOK

GRADESLower elementary: K-2, but it can be easily adapted for all levels.

DESCRIPTIONThe main objective of this lesson is to create a year-long workstation to develop vocabulary by using graphic organizers and the newspaper. The book can be used in regular or bilingual classrooms. For instance, in bilingual classrooms the book can be developed in an ESL’s workstation. Additionally, teachers can modify the book using students’ native language, in order to use it as a language arts resource. The book will be a useful tool for students to enrich, reinforce and record information related to language arts, science, math and social studies. There is only one lesson to model and develop the idea of creating the book. That lesson will be the foundation for students to start working on their books during the year.

MAIN OBJECTIVES1. The student will develop, classify and record extensive vocabulary.2. Student will create a book to recognize that different parts of a book such as cover, title page, and table of contents offer information.3. Students will develop vocabulary related to all subject areas.

TEKS OBJECTIVES

Language Arts4. The student communicates clearly by putting thoughts and feelings into spoken words.      A. learn the vocabulary of school such as numbers, shapes, colors, directions, and categories

SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON

FocusTeacher will give one newspaper to four cooperative groups. Students will explore the newspaper and discuss what they find. They will start identifying letters, numbers, titles, pictures, etc.

Whole Group InstructionTeacher will explain to students the importance of the newspaper. Teacher will present the Houston Chronicle as the most important newspaper in Houston. Teacher will show students the sections of the newspaper.

Teacher will show to students a book they will complete during the year, cutting and pasting pictures and/or words from the Houston Chronicle.

Teacher will present the Houston Chronicle Workstation to students. It should have the name of the workstation, an example of a complete book, a suggestion page where they can start working on (connecting a page to the curriculum), scissors, glue, markers, pencils, and the Houston Chronicle.

Independent PracticeTeacher will take individual pictures of students holding the Houston Chronicle.Students will decorate the cover of their book and will write their names.

Year-Long The Houston Chronicle Workstation Students will have the Houston Chronicle workstation open for them to work at least twice a

week. Students do not have to complete the book within a specific period of time. Students will complete their book according to their interest and to the things they find. Teacher will guide students during the process of completing the book, make suggestions and

check progress.
