9:00 am – 11:50 am SER STEM - Robotics Training & Competition ....................................................................MesquiteStudents Battle Robots is a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) 2-day action-filled activity, where students put into practice competency in applying the engineering process to problem solving and STEM careers. Middle and high school students, whether first time robot builders or veteran roboticists, will build, re-design and improve their own robot to compete as a gladiator in a Gladiators Arena with other robots. After each initial match, they will take the feedback of the competition and modify, strengthen or re-design their robot, to make it the ultimate winner in the playoffs. 9:00 am – 11:50 am SER STEM – Drone Training & Competition ...............................................................................PalmThis is a unique opportunity for middle and high school students to learn the basics of Flying Drones in a 2-day interactive event. Students will learn about variables such as pitch, yaw, control, trim and a wide variety of other aeronautical concepts, by flying drones themselves. The morning begins with every team loading the Lumi AP on their shared smartphone and power up the LUMI Drone. At this point, teams will begin a rotation to learn different skills on an obstacle course. Beginners will have special help with our uniquely applied smart technology that helps first-time flyers learn the ropes and start basic exercises in a course of 4 to 6 challenges/obstacles. These will allow the students to experience different aspects of flying drones and control them in a safe and controlled environment. Using Census Data for Community and Neighborhood AnalysisThis workshop designed for nonprofit advocacy and social service delivery personnel that use data for budget analysis, grant writing, needs assessment and planning. In a live computer lab setting, attendees will use the American Factfinder (data search tool); conduct searches using the Census 2010 for population numbers/basic characteristics, and American Community Survey for social/economic characteristics such as school enrollment, household income, poverty status, nativity, disability and more topics. SER National, the United States Army and Mountain View College are bringing for the first time SER STEM Community Day to Mountain View College! This inaugural event will bring together high school students from Arlington, Dallas, Fort Worth, Grand Prairie, and Irving Independent School Districts to explore the world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in fun, engaging, and educational ways. In addition, students will attend workshops presented by science and engineering professionals from NASA, FedEx, U.S. Army, AT&T, GM and other corporations and government agencies. Community Day will provide an opportunity for students to participate in interactive STEM exhibits and visit corporations offering educational and career opportunities.
