FEZThe FEZBUILDING TOWARD A BRIGHTER FUTURE March/April 2015

January 7th 2015 was the date that I was sworn in as LuLu Shrine’s 131st Poten-tate. It is an honor to serve the Nobility.

The Shrine’s audito-rium was transformed into a beautiful ball-room-like setting for the installation of the Presidents of the Units and Clubs on January 10th. We were enter-tained by the musically talented Stacey and Jenna Fink followed by the Philadelphia Society of Young Magicians. During dinner each table was visited by the members of the group who performed some mind boggling magic tricks. This was followed by a stage show of more sophis-ticated wonders. Many thanks to all who participated in put-ting on a memorable evening of events!

Even a winter storm could not dissuade over 500 Masons and Shriners to attend the Masonic Breakfast. We were honored

that the Right Wor-shipful Grandmas-ter of Pennsylvania Robert S. Bate-man joined us. He stressed the impor-tance of Masonic and Shrine mem-bership through brotherhood and fellowship. Thank you to Harry Speth and his staff for a very successful

occasion.

The Divan Ladies are busy planning the 6th annual National Women’s History Month pro-gram on March 15th. They keep reminding the Nobles that this is a luncheon For Ladies Only!

On March 22nd the Easter Bunny returns to LuLu Shrine for a children’s breakfast fol-lowed by games—and perhaps a few Easter eggs! For sev-eral years Ken and Mary Rose chaired this event and this year we a dedicating it in memory of Ken.

2015 will be remembered as the “year of the cowboy”. A Country Western night is being planned in April; Impe-rial Session is being held in Houston, Texas; the Potentate’s trip will be a Western Journey; and the rodeo returns in Sep-tember. So polish up yer boots and dust off yer cowboy hat! Yee-haw!!

Please check our website www.LuLuShriners.org for calendar events every month. Each Noble and his Lady are encouraged to attend our “Fun Raisers”.

It’s amazing how quickly time flies as I attempt to visit clubs and units! I am very proud to represent LuLu Shrine and my goal is to offer support for the Nobility by being visible.

Remember: It’s not what the Shrine can do for you but what you can do for the Shrine and for the children under our care. Keeping with this theme I would like to institute “Noble of the Month”. This selection will be made by the Potentate in recognition for a Noble’s outstanding achievement during that month. Announcement will be made on LuLu’s website and the Noble will receive a certificate. I am pleased to announce that the Noble of the Month of January, 2015 is Harry Speth.

Yours in the Faith, Matthew W. Hallowell 2015 Potentate, LuLu Shrine

For the Ladies of LuLu Shrine

What is Shriners Village?? It is a website that was developed as a secure web community used to house useful information for individual Shri-ners and Temples. But don’t think that it exists only for Shriners because there is a link for the Ladies of the Shrine!!

How do you get to this website? Simply go to www.shrinersvillage.com to register. Click reg-ister now, enter requested Noble information, select Lady, verify you name, and you’re all set! Then, on the home page click the “fraternity” tab at the top navigation bar and it will bring up a sidebar where you will find Ladies Home Page listed. Try it!

Want to know more about Shriners Interna-tional? Click on “Lady of a Shriner” and watch the video. Then go back to the home page where you can click on the First Lady’s Program (you’ll see it on the left side of the home page screen). First Lady Cheryl Stauss is the wife of Imperial Potentate Dale W. Stauss. They have a grand-son who has been a patient at Philadelphia’s Shriners Hospital for Children. This video was first shown at the Imperial Session last summer in Minneapolis. Imagine how proud we from LuLu Shrine were as we sat in the convention center and watched it with hundreds (or was it thousands?) of Shriners and their Ladies!!

More to see on the Shriners Village website: Did you ever wonder what goes on at the yearly Imperial Session? On the home page is a video “Man on the Street” which is a daily recap of activities from the 2014 session. I’ve watched it a couple times to see if anyone from LuLu Shrine was in the background.

And that’s not all! In addition to Shriners Vil-lage, you can check out the following social media networks: facebook.com/shrinersinternational; facebook.com/shrinershospitalsforchildren; twitter.com/shriners; twitter.com/shrinershop; and youtube.com/shrinershospitals.

Happy browsing! Bobbie Hallowell, First Lady, LuLu Shrine

Well here it is the first month of a new job. So far it has been very interesting and I’m enjoying it. Each day I go in with a plan, things develop and so much for the plan.

We sent the “jeep” to C and C Ford. Actually Dave Caddick’s guys picked it up and took it over for us. The jeep is mostly used for spreading salt after a snow storm, and has not been running at all. We don’t have tags on it since it never leaves the property. Hope-fully we can get it repaired at a decent price.

The Wednesday work guys are back working around LuLu. They are working on their winter proj-ects until the weather gets warmer. They are the best deal around. Give them lunch and they work all day. Don’t tell them I said that or they will want des-ert too!!! But seriously they are invaluable to LuLu. Thank you Nobles for all you do. One project will be to bring in a high-lift to replace water stained ceiling tiles and broken lights. It seems some rentals that use very large speakers that when cranked up they put out so much noise it pops the lights. To handle those issues we up the deposit to cover those costs.

We are planning to put a calendar of events back into the FEZ. We are hoping the nobility, family and friends will come out and support some of the out-side rentals as it would be in our best interest to do. If we support them it would encourage the rentals to come back to our facility because they would have bigger crowds and a better financial outcome.

Nobles, Mike Pale and the Hospital need your help. Mike needs someone with him while taking patients to the Hospital. He should not be doing this alone. Two people are required for each trip. Please if you have some time to volunteer, give me a call and I will pass the information along to Mike. Remember we

all joined the organization to do it for the kids. Now is the time to step up and help our kids.

If you need any help from the office or building staff, please make your requests through me. It is very important for the smooth operation of an office, that the staff take direction from one person. So please all requests must come through me. I’m not sure how it started but the office staff does not do seating or catering requests. These duties are a function of the event chairperson, and will be handled that way. We are still

shorthanded until June is back to work full time. She’s doing well and has been coming in occasion-ally. It’s good to see her on the mend.

Lastly I would again like to thank all who came out to the election meeting and had the confidence to elect Hugh and I as Treasurer and Recorder. Chris Mason has spent time assisting with the ins and outs of the Treasurer’s job. Thanks Chris for all your past service and current assistance.

Remember if I can be of any assistance, do not hes-itate to call. I’m in the book.

Last year we were at all of the parades. We had

interesting speakers at our meetings. We ran a trip

to NYC to visit the Intrepid museum. We had a great

turnout for Ocean City weekend and increased mem-

bership. In December we had a wonderful holiday

party to end a successful year.

On Sunday Jan 18th we installed our officers and

in spite of the ice storm over 50 people turned out.

Incoming president Mike Chaykowski has taken over

the reins from Joe and we wish him well. Ron Mer-

edith & John “Sparky” Lynde were named nobles of

the year 2014 from NESC.

For 2015 we are going to continue offering a free 1

and whose membership was not suspended for not

paying past dues. If you are interested in trying the

As always, keep your fishing line wet and your powder dry!

In 2015 the Rod & Gun Club will meet at the Temple at 7:00PM in Room 5 on the 4th Thursday of each month.

11

As we begin the new year, we can’t help looking back on 2014 and recall-

ing all the great memories and fun we had. Our Club is again off to fast start this year and by the time you receive this issue of the Fez, our members will already have begun improving their shoot-ing skills and making plans to be on the water in search of that big fish.

Planning has already begun for some of the events coming up this winter and spring. These include:

March 11 – R & G Top Gun Pistol Event – Classic Pistol, Southampton, PA – “Range Safety Instruction”

April – (date to be confirmed) – Lehigh Valley Sporting, Clays, Coplay, PA

April 23 – Orvis Fly Fishing 101 – “Learn how to fly fish” Plymouth Meeting, PA

June – (date to be confirmed) - Striper Fishing on the Cape, Cape Cod, MA

We welcome our newest members Nobles J.R. Dotsey, Dave Gingras and Al Wiesner, who I know will already be drawing a bead and catching up on some great opportunities to be on the water and to enjoy great camaraderie. Each month we will have an event scheduled on either our Club meet-ing night or other more convenient time.

If you have a suggestion for an interesting speaker or other worthwhile Rod and Gun sport-ing event we urge you to contact our Program Committee Chairman, Noble Ray Bloemker at

215-669-1388, or one of our officers. And we invite you to join our Club where you can count on having “the time of your life.” To join the Rod & Gun Club please contact our Secretary, Noble Laird Bevitz.

First of all I would like to offer my congratula-tions to our new Potentate, Illustrious Sir Matt Hallowell and his Divan. I wish them the best of luck in the forthcoming year and hopes for a prosperous Shrine that grows in numbers and finances. Congratulations are also in order to Illustrious Sir Joel Brookstein and Noble Hugh McGinnis our new recorder and Treasurer.

I also wish to congratulate Noble Dan Scheetz PM on his appointment as Deputy Worship-ful Grand master of District “C”. Our annual Super Party is this Sunday and though the attendance is off a bit due to a few deaths and sicknesses, I am sure we will have a great time.

Carlo is catering this event and there is plenty of camels’ milk, soda and snacks for twice the amount of people attending. Our membership is still growing with at least three Masons interested in joining as soon as they become Shriners. Our Ladies Night will once again be held at the Spring-house Tavern on Bethlehem Pike on February 21, 2015 starting at 6:30 PM.

The cost is $70.00 per couple with a first class menu. It is open to all, but reservations are a must

before February 12. Luckily, there are no parades this time of year. January has been the worst month I can remember as far as being able to ride my motorcycle.

I may be in the Polar Bear Club, but my bike doesn’t adapt well to skis. The Masonic Breakfast

was well attended consider-ing the weather with maybe a 20% fall off due to the snow.

The food was good as usual with plenty to eat for those who

wanted second helpings.

Our Stewards deserve a round of applause for their work and dedication. Illustri-

ous Sir Joel Ward has been in and out of the hos-pital and we wish him a speedy recovery and good health. He has been a tremendous help to me in my past two years as president of our unit.

I wish to welcome our newest members to The Motor Unit: Frank Flem, Jerry Jay, David Jay, Doug Fink (Finky) and Earl Colella. For those who have not attended a meeting in a while, plan on com-ing out to one. Things have changed and are more orderly than in the past. This is a fun group who enjoy each other’s company and we socialize as well as conducting business.

question that the above title puts forward. Today I would like to find the answer as to how God shows us the worth of ourselves, as well as His undying love and acceptance of who we are.

I like to suggest that the first eleven chapters of Genesis speak to this primal issue. The old, old stories are addressed precisely to this very topic of our worth, our place, yeah our very sense of self. The book of Genesis is divided into two very distinctive parts. The first eleven chapters are what

one might call primeval history and the last thirty eight chapters are what scholars call “salvation history”. In the beginning, God’s intention was simply to bless his creation. After so much of it went wrong, God reinforced His purpose for blessing by singling out Abraham. God said to him I want to bless you, I want to give you the things you need, I want to lead you to fulfillment. Here, God makes a second attempt to bring blessing into the human situation.

In this issue, I want to concentrate on the first eleven chap-ters of Genesis. They are the truth in a very special form. They are not eye witness accounts, but a series of questions that any kind of thinking person is going to wonder about. We can’t help but wonder where all creation came from and why we are here? We wonder about ourselves and what lies behind all reality. What has gone wrong and how we are to make sense of the existence in which we find ourselves. The authors of the creation stories wove for us answers to these ultimate questions that every human being is going to think about. These eleven chapters, then, are a kind of truth with deeper significances describing events from a detached stand point. It is not a reportorial factual truth, but rather a truth in story form; called epistemology. Just like our left brain perceives scientific truths and our right brain provides for us a deeper truth of intuition, and thereby to see more deeply into reality of cold facts, which then provide us both of these avenues.

What we find in those chapters is God asking Himself what it would take to fulfill humankind, what does this one need in order to become joyful and complete? Yes, he needs food, shelter and water; the elemental needs of life, but God also realized that we needed to do something, to share with God in the cave of what God had started. We humans have been invited to be the caretakers of the world He created and to help out by bringing creation to a fuller flower and potentialities. God also realized that we needed companionship. He realized that animals were not enough to satisfy humans’ desire for togetherness, to communicate

and to have the capability for relating and to acknowledge our existences. So God created our opposites. When Adam first laid eyes upon Eve, we can almost hear him shouting in excitement by saying “hot diggity dog, now that’s what I’m talking about” And if we could hear him, whistle all kinds of cat calls!

Both Adam and Eve came as the climatic act of God’s creativity and when God looked upon what He had made, in each case it says: “God looked upon what He had made and said it was good, it is good, it is good”. But when He created humankind, you and me, He said with great excitement and pleasure: “you are good, you are so very good, you are so very, very good”. You and I and our children after us, we are all the crown of His creation and His absolute joy and pleasure. He felt that way when you were conceived in the womb, He feels the very same way about you today no matter how old you are, and He will always feel this way about you! We are not an accident, but utterly intentional and purposeful reality in the sight of God. His intention for us is that you and I know the kind of joy that the One who has life in Himself also has desire that you and I share with Him His kind of joy unconditionally. Amen.

Our January meeting saw a great turn out President Ray Bloemker was installed along with our other offi-cers by our own Past President Ill Sir Matt Hallowell. As always our speaker held everyone’s attention as he spoke on the importance of having a will and proper preparations for one’s estate.

This year President Ray’s goals are to increase membership not only here at Bucks County Shrine Club but also at his Lodge and LuLu Temple. We are very pleased as to the attendance of new members last year some being from Crescent Temple. We hope that this will continue for many years ago when we met at the Buck Hotel a very large percentage of our members were from Crescent Temple.

At our March Meeting we will be again entertained by The Irish Dancers who we had for the last two years to cele-brate St. Patrick’s Day Lady’s Night. This has been such a smashing success in the past. President Ray was asked to have them back again this year. If you have missed their show in past years you will not want to miss it this year.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be our next Tem-ple event when once again George will attempt to cross the Delaware. We have a new driver this year in Ed Neinfield who will be driving our float on a regular basis. With Captain Jack stepping down this year but still participating as a character on the boat we are looking for a new fearless leader to stand in the front of the boat to fend off the ice as we travel across the rivers of parades which we participate in each year.

Our Blind Squire’s winter supply of nuts is now down to only a few pounds but he is still wiling to share,

so if you would like to help our Float Committee sell-ing their store of nuts please contact Ill Sir Roy L. Knauth 215-355-3796 or [email protected]. The money raised is to maintain and transport our float of Washington Crossing the Del-aware. We still have this year Light Walnut Halves

$9.00, Deluxe Mixed Nuts No Peanuts $10.00, Giant Slated Whole Cashews $10.00, Colossal

Natural Pistachios $9.00, Whole Almonds $9.00, Homey Roasted Cashews $9.00,

Turkish Apricot Halves $7.00, Fruit and Nut Mix $7.00 Dark Chocolate Cranberries $7.00, Dark Chocolate Fruit and Nut Mix $7.00 and all in one pound resalable bags. But sup-

plies are running low so order now.

March and April dinner reservation are being taken by our now Second Vice Presi-

dent Nate Cooper 267-679-9137 [email protected] who will be more than happy to take all your reservations but please no later than Monday morn-ing prior to each month’s meeting and preferably the Friday before. We are looking forward to seeing you there.

Deck the StallsWelcome to our

world of mucking stalls, changing out those stalls, feeding watering, grooming, cut-ting hay, storing it in the barn, oh I almost forgot rid-ing. If this sounds like fun to you we have room for you on the fourth Thursday of each month. We have been doing this now since 1914 and over the years there has not been one mem-ber who has not had fun in our history.

We would like to thank everyone for their partic-ipation in our annual raffle that was drawn after our Temple Elections. First prize was $500.00 Second $300.00 and Third $200.00

January started off with our annual New Years Day ride with five members participating on a beautiful day for about a hour and half ride fol-lowed by the Temple’s instillation dinner where we had two tables but later in the month our regu-lar meeting was cancelled due to some deep frost that our secretary was concerned about, then rescheduling it to February fourth god I hope it does not snow on that date I do not know what we would do.

Noble Wild Bill has written a news letter for “It’s Why I Ride” found at www.equitrekking.com which talks about learning to ride and falling in love with his horse. For those of us who have got-ten back into the sport at our later years it is very interesting to see someone else’s views. Bill lost his horse last October after battling health prob-lems for almost two years so not all stories have happy endings but in this case he is actively look-ing for another ride.

Ill Sir’s Manny and Roy will be attending the Spring Meeting of the International Shrine Horse Patrol in Hous-ton at the end of February to make arrangements for this year’s com-petition and the street parade at

the 2015 Imperial Sessions. We will also be dis-cussing the 2016 Imperial in Tampa when we will be hosting the event.

Again this year we will be taking our annual pilgrimage to the Pennsylvania Horse Shoe on Saturday March 7th 2015 at the Pennsylvania Fair Grounds in Harrisburg. This article should be out before we take off for the show so if you are interested contact Ill Sir Roy Knauth and captain 267-471-6952 or [email protected] . We will be leaving in the morning spending the day at the show and having dinner on our return trip.

Our March and April rides have not been final-ized as of yet but we usually have been riding at Fair Hill, Maryland the first weekend in May each year.

So as always if you have an interest in horses, own a horse, or have ridden before our meet-ings are on the fourth Tuesday of every month unless the frost is too deep at LuLu Temple in the Mounted Guard Room at 7:00. We hope to see you soon and again thanks for your support

The History of the Shrine & LuLu (16) Chapter LV (65)

A DECADE OF CHANGE – PART IV 2014By Noble Harry Speth, Historian

2014 – Ill. Sir Leonard R. “Bob” Gold (FUN, FAMILY & FELLOWSHIP), Potentate, Accompanied by his Lady Nor-man, selected the theme of “Brotherhood and Loyalty”. The Temple Business and Installation of Officers, held Thursday, January 2nd, found all Line Officers advanced, and Noble Scott Simkins installed as Oriental Guide. The Recorder, Ill. Sir Harry Reiter and Treasurer Noble Chris Mason (incumbents) continued their Offices. Noble Charles Quaste was re-appointed Colonel of Units.

Unit & Club Officers Installation/Potentate’s Reception (1/4) was lightly attended (app. 130). Held in the Great Hall, the event included Dinner, Entertainment and a Special Gift for those in attendance. The 2014 Member Directory again continued to include all Members of LuLu (A Valuable Directory).

The Annual Masonic Breakfast (1/25) found atten-dance near 500. All were impressed by the remarks of Noble Charles Graham, concerning Membership, and also the remarks by R.W.G.M. Robert J. Bateman, concern-ing the State of the Fraternity and plans to improve our prospective.

The Divan Ladies again sponsored (5th Annual) “National Women’s History Month (3/9) with a Luncheon and remarks by Actress Linda Kenyon entitled “A Life of My Own, Meet-ing Eleanor Roosevelt”. Again, a very enjoyable event was prepared for Ladies Only and their female friends.

The Potentate’s Ball (3/29) honoring Ill. Sir “Bob” Gold and Lady Norma, was held at “Brookside Manor at Somer-ton Springs”. A delicious Dinner was served, followed by Music and Dancing by Tony D’s Band. Eighty eight (88) Nobles, Ladies and Friends enjoyed a great evening.

On April 12th, Joe Conklin “Man of a Thousand Voices” presented a Show of impersonations of Politicians, Athletes and Film Stars, in the Great Hall. Some 250 attended and enjoyed “90 minutes of ROLLICKING FUN”.

On Friday May 9th, Lu Lu sponsored a Mother’s Day Piano Concert with entertainment by Noble Lance Wiseman and specially invited guest performers. The event included a Buffet Style Dinner, Jewelry/Book Stands and a Raffle.

The 73rd Annual LuLu Shrine Circus, held May 17th through the 20th, in the outdoor Arena, completed seven (7) shows as scheduled. Hamid Circus production was excellent. Weather impeded one show, but Finky, Stinky and Dave Caddick brought it through profitably.

Ocean City Family Weekend (5/30-6/1) was again co-hosted by Ill. Sirs Joel Brookstein and Rick Lamontagne.

The First Official Weekend was held in 1964 and has been an Annual Event ever since. Once again, LuLu paraded down the Boardwalk before a huge crowd and all had a great time.

The 141st Imperial Council was held in Minneapolis July 5th-10th. A motion to increase the Imperial (Operat-ing) Capital Dues by $12.00 was again defeated after much debate. Also defeated were motions to allow Temples to set various rates for their Dues structure and to allow Temples, Units and Clubs to donate Charity Funds to The Wounded Warrior Project/rather than support our Hospitals. Mem-bership continues to be the #1 major concern for Imperial and all Temples. Noble Dale W. Strauss of KEM Shriners was elected and installed as Imperial Potentate.

The 9th Annual (Outdoor) Family Picnic, August 9th, was held in the Court Yard and the Great Hall. Family, friends and neighbors were invited in order for us to show the sociability of the Shrine. Entertainment was provided by exhibits of animals from the Philadelphia Zoo.

Lu Lu’s Annual Paper Drive again started in May and continued into the Fall. This effort supported by the Pres-ence of the Shepherd’s Float at the Middletown Grange Fair (8/13-17), individual donations by Units, Clubs and Mem-bers raised approximately $14,000 for the SHC. A portion of this ($10,000) was presented by the Divan, to the Imperial Potentate at Imperial Sessions in July.

The MASA Fall Meeting (9/4-7) was held in Virginia Beach, and again found Lu Lu families housed at the Holi-day Inn Express (all Ocean Front Rooms), Chaired by Ill. Sir Gary Davis (2013). With a good Hotel, great Hospitality and great weather, Nobles, Ladies, Families and friends had a great weekend. The Shrine Parade proved very successful: Bucks County S.C. filled their Boat with members and other Shriners, and took 1st Place prize.

Another successful Golf Club Outing, held 9/15 at LuLu Country Club, chaired by Nobles Soderberg, Gergo, Far-rell and Caddick allowed Lu Lu to donate approximately $15,000 to the SHC, Philadelphia Unit.

The 26th Annual Liberty Pro Rodeo was held in LuLu‘s Arena 9/11-14 with seven (7) performances on four con-secutive days. Since last year’s experiment to perform over two short weekends proved to be less profitable than expected, we returned to the one long weekend venue, and, it was successful! Co-Chairmen Doug and Don Fink, Dave Caddick, aided by Ill. Sir Bill Morwald (2006) gave all a great, profitable show.

The third major Fund Raiser this year, the Ninth Annual

Page 21: BUILDING TOWARD A BRIGHTER FUTURE March/April 2015 From ... · BUILDING TOWARD A BRIGHTER FUTURE March/April 2015 January 7th 2015 was the date that I was sworn in as LuLu Shrine’s

21

Haunted House, was open to the Public on eleven nights in October. Again Chaired by Ill. Sir Gary Davis (2013), who was the Founder of this Event, though somewhat impacted by rain, again proved profitable.

LuLu planned three social trips this year:

France and Spain, including Normandy – 10 Days starting April 28th

Seneca Lake Wine Trail, Seneca Lake, N.Y. – 10/7-10/19

Highlights of Hudson Valley – 8/20-8/22

Unfortunately, none of these events elicited sufficient attendance for a break-even trip and had to be cancelled.

The Annual Trip to the Tomb of the Unknown at Arling-ton Cemetery (11/9) found some 50 Nobles, Ladies and Friends traveling by Bus. Due to a scheduling problem, Lu Lu time to present the Wreath was delayed until 3:00 P.M. Prior to that time, the group visited The Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in D.C. Lu Lu’s Wreath was placed by Com-mander Edwin Matlack, assisted by Ill. Sir “Bob” Gold. Fol-lowing the Ceremony, the group dined at ALMAS SHRINE.

The Annual Ladies’ Luncheon, honoring First Lady Norma Gold, was held Sunday 11/14, at Brookside Manor/Somerton Springs, with a delicious Luncheon and great entertainment – a presentation by The Seeing Eye Corpora-tion. A Trained Seeing Eye Dog was present, accompanied by a Puppy-in-Training. Some 100 Ladies present enjoyed the day.

The Third Annual Pops Concert, held 11/23 in Lu Lu’s Great Hall, featured Concert Pianist Noble Lance Wiseman and surprise guest performers. A Mozart Concerto, light Classics, Movie Music and Jazz Favorites were rendered. A light Lunch was available.

A first time event was held 11/28 in the Great Hall. It was a free “Shriners Family Dinner” consisting of Chicken & Biscuits for Shriners and other immediate family mem-bers. Potentate Bob provided this opportunity to thank all who had helped, in any way, to support a “Great Shrine Year!”

A Magic Show was performed 12/20 in the Great Hall as a Temple Fund Raiser. Members were asked to “Become a Magic Mom or Dad”. As a First Time Fund Raiser, for LuLu, and with support of “Moms & Dads”, it was highly success-ful. Some 225 attended the Show.

A New Year’s Eve Party was not held this year due to a declining interest in the last several years.

Participation in Shrine Parades was mixed this year. However, with encouragement of the Colonel of Units, Noble Chuck Quaste, some five parades were supported by at least one or two Units or Clubs. A new site added this year was Lower Makefield – Veteran’s Day Parade (11/9). Participa-tion was good in spite of a date conflict with the Legion of Honor’s trip to Arlington. Most successful Parade was in Virginia Beach (MASA), where the Bucks County George Washington Float was fully manned and took a First Place Trophy. The Oriental Band took a First Place Trophy, and our Colonel of Units Noble Chuck Quaste was awarded a

First Place “Director’s Trophy”. Unfortunately, the Mounted Guard was unable to participate this year.

A Business Meeting and Annual Election of Temple Officers was held December 17th. The three senior Temple Officers were unopposed and advanced without an Elec-tion: Nobles Matt Hallowell (Potentate); Joe Rocco (Chief Rabban); Zalig Stein (Asst. Rabban). Scott Simkins (O.G.) having declined to advance, Noble Douglas Fink was elected H.P.&P. Noble Jerry Jay ran unopposed and was elected O.G. Noble Harry Reiter, having given advanced notice after serving 10 years as Recorder, announced he was stepping down. Two Nobles were nominated as Recorder: Ill. Sir Gary Davis (2013) and Ill. Sir Joel Brookstein (2008). Noble Chris Mason, having served as Treasurer for eight years, announced in advance that he was not seeking another term. Two candidates were nominated for Treasurer: Ill Sir Roy Knauth (2000) and Noble Hugh McGinniss. Ballots cast for these two Offices found Ill. Sir Joel Brookstein elected Recorder and Noble Hugh McGinniss elected Treasurer.

We have been very fortunate to have Ill. Sir Harry Reiter as our Recorder for 10 years. His dedication to his Office has been commendable and greatly appreciated. In addi-tion, whenever consulted for a favor or chore, the request has always been very pleasant and with enthusiasm and willingness. “Thank You”, Ill. Sir Harry, Job Well Done!

At this same Meeting, Notice having been given, there was lengthy discussion concerning whether or not the Temple should even consider selling all or some of the 22 acres, the Mosque, and other housing and space it occu-pies. Finally, a vote was taken and the Members present unanimously authorized the Potentate to appoint a Com-mittee to “consider” any possible sales and report back to the Nobility before entering into any agreements.

The Fixers Unit kept busy this year with repairs and replacements for the Mosque and the Arena. Every event in the Arena needed their assistance with repairs, set-up, tear-down and clean-up. The Green Awning, at the Front Entrance to the Mosque, was severely damaged by a truck hitting the structure. It was revised and replaced by the original contractor at no cost to Lu Lu.

The Installation of Elected Temple Officers occurred on January 7th, 2015. Potentate “Bob” announced his selec-tions for:

Noble of the Year – Noble Gerald W. Schmidt

Club of the Year – Northeast Shrine Club

Unit of the Year – The Oriental Band

One Ceremonial (12/3) and one Oligation Evening (6/21) created ten (10) new Nobles this year. Potentate Bob worked diligently to maintain members, but the Temple lost 93 by Suspensions and 45 by Death, and through other changes, we experienced a net loss of 117 Nobles. Membership on 12/31/14 fell from 1587 to 1470.

Ill. Sir William Niemeyer (1979) died February 16, 2014

Ill. Sir Frank H. Guinn (2004) died August 21, 2014

We are in the final stages of completing the radiology renovation

project. With the support of many clubs and units, we were able

to raise our goal of 1.2million dollars to renovate our aging

equipment to upgrade to digital radiography.

Renovating the radiology suite was a two phase project. Phase

one included the construction and installation of the EOS® ultra-

low dose Imaging System, that significantly reduces exposure to

radiation by nine times, and shortens the examination time. Phase

two consist of installing two new Carestream DRX Evolution

Digital x-ray room systems and one mobile DRX-Revolution Mobile

X-ray system. The equipment uses low-dose digital x-rays, innovative software maximizes image clarity, and

this is a wireless system. The mobile x-ray system will be easy to maneuver around a child’s hospital bed and

offers a stress free x-ray process for a patient that is not able to visit the department for the needed x-ray.

EOS® and Carestream® technologies provide the safest imaging option for our patient population. Combined

with our expert pediatric specialists and surgeons, we help infants, children and teens receive the best medical

care and rehabilitation options possible. These investments in technology support our continuing commitment

to provide the highest quality and safest patient care for the children and we serve.
