It was with great sorrow that the Mount Saint Vincentcommunity learned of the passing of Marial Mosher onOctober 4, 2008. The World Podium Speakers’ Series got offto an inspirational start with “My Road to an Authentic Life” with the Duchess of York,Sarah Ferguson. The Duchess spoke in St. John’s on September 15 and in Halifax on September 16, 2008.

The Duchess arrived on stage at the HalifaxMetro Centre following an introduction byMount Saint Vincent University PresidentKathryn Laurin. After thankingLaurin for being an “amazing lady”,Ferguson talked about her day inHalifax, referencing local hauntsMills Brothers Department Store andCafé Chianti. She recognizedLieutenant Governor, TheHonourable Mayann E. Francis, ONS,DHumL ’04, who was in theaudience, thanking her for comingand calling her a “strong lady at thehelm.” It was a humble and fittingbeginning to a night which felt, according to alumna Lisa Whynott,BOA ’94, “like sitting on a sofa, having a chat with a friend.”

Sarah Ferguson lead the audience on achronology of her early experience: hercountry upbringing, her time as a royal, herdivorce, her financial hardships, and herstruggles with weight. When she “marriedthe world” at age 24, her victories andfailures became public record and tabloidfodder. Following the dissolution of hermarriage and subsequent bankruptcy,Ferguson’s confidence was shattered. She was at her lowest point when hergrandmother gave her the advice that would change her life: go out and see how lucky you are. And she did.

In the following 20 years, Ferguson hasdeveloped a well-deserved reputation as an“Ambassador for Change.” Turning the tableson the media, Ferguson now uses the publicstage and her position to bring awareness

to global issues affecting women andchildren. Ferguson describes herself as a“foghorn for silent whispers” and seeks togive a voice to those people without themeans or platform to speak for themselves. In her Halifax talk, she brought awareness tothe global issues of healthcare, racism, obesity, and the right to education. She“leads from the front” with her work withthe Little Red Foundation and her newestproject, Hartmoor LLC, a multi-mediacompany based in New York, devoted to

innovative lifestyle design, education, andcharitable giving (www.sarahferguson.com).She is not afraid to look silly or kick upsome dust if she sees something that shebelieves is wrong. As she says, “if it canmake a difference, then who cares?”

She speaks to social responsibility, an issue which is at the core of the Mountphilosophy. Ferguson had just left Romania, where she and her daughter Beatrice wereworking with Romanian gypsies and theRomanian Government to promote tolerance, education and awareness. This socialresponsibility is something that she teachesher children, both in words and in action.

Ferguson’s tone was informal and funny. Shedid not have a script and spoke, instead, from the heart. By speaking in universalthemes and referencing popular culture, the

audience related to Ferguson and hermessage of social responsibility, globalstewardship, and hope became that muchstronger. Whynott liked her approach, saying“she talked one-on-one with everybody –she was not preaching.” From the talk,Whynott took away what the Duchess refersto as her 3-C’s for living: communication, compassion, and compromise. This issomething she has incorporated into herpersonal and professional life, evenincluding a short piece on it in her company

newsletter. Whynott says,“Compromise and compassion oftenget overlooked, but they’re soimportant. If we all did that, theworld would be a better place.”

The evening closed with an armchairinterview with CTV’s Steve Murphy.Ferguson dominated the stage, handling his questions withtrademark cheekiness and wit. Whenasked how she would define herself, given her wide range of roles, shechose the one that was nearest toher heart – mother.

The Duchess closed her speech by impartingwhat she calls her “nuggets” – little bits ofwisdom gleaned on her road to an authenticlife: “Don’t believe your own stuff all thetime.” “Live and give.” “Don’t beat yourselfup.” “Go forward with courage and self-respect.” “Smile.” “Be who you are.”“Choose to be happy.”

Choose to make a difference.

ALUMNAE NEWS

It has been an honour to continue to represent the alumnaeperspective at the University. As alumnae, we are keystakeholders in the future of the Mount and ensuring theUniversity’s reputation for academic excellence.

The MSVAA has had a busy few months making sure that weare offering opportunities for alumnae to be more engagedand supporting student success. We’ve made good progresson fulfilling our other strategic priorities for 2007-2008. Theywere: to focus on the Alumnae Award for Teaching Excellence;to focus on student awards and student relations; to developa stewardship plan; and to run cost-effective engaging eventsthat meet the needs of our alumnae.

We continue to support the University as it moves into theimplementation stage of the new strategic plan Destination2012. We also applaud the Board of Governors, the Universityadministration and the Capital Campaign Cabinet as theymove forward in their efforts to raise $16 million for BuildingTomorrow Together. The MSVAA is pleased to support theCampaign as an organization and through the personal giftsof individual board members.

The Association had a busy summer and early fall. The MSVGolf Classic at Granite Springs was a huge success despite thedriving rain on August 14th. Congratulations to the golfcommittee and co-chairs Sheldon Miller, BBA ’99 and CarolynNobes, MEd ’97 who surpassed the record result from lastyear! The revenue earned allows us to support studentscholarships, bursaries, activities and the University’s CapitalCampaign. Of course, special thanks to our Gold Sponsor,Aliant, and the Department of University Advancement for theirexceptional support for this event.

We were pleased to welcome members of the class of 1948and 1958 to campus during Alumnae Weekend 2008 in lateSeptember. Many other alumnae took the opportunity toreconnect during a valley wine tour and martini night atVinnie’s. It was great to see everyone and I congratulate thealumnae weekend committee for coming up with some greatideas for us to connect.

If you’ve been involved with us recently, I hope we cancontinue to count on your support. If not, why not make thisyear the year of a new beginning? The University is built andhas thrived on a foundation of community. It is thatcommunity of students, faculty, staff and alumnae that willhelp it to grow and continue to flourish well into the future.

Sincerely,

Three local entrepreneurs showcased their classroom smarts on thenational stage in October with a successful appearance on CBCTelevision’s Dragons’ Den, a program which features aspiringentrepreneurs who present their ideas to a panel of Canadian businessmoguls.

David Reynolds, BBA, ’08 and current Mount business administrationstudent Riad Byne, along with business partner Drew McKenna, pitchedtheir company QuickSnap Inc. to the Dragons and walked awayunscathed with an investment of $125,000.

“Our appearance on the show was a tremendous experience – it wasexhilarating and overwhelming for our team,” said Reynolds, founder ofQuickSnap. “In the end, we walked out of the den confident that ourproduct is going to reach new heights through the knowledge andsupport of our new business partners.”

What began through inspiration and skills gained during the Mount’sEntrepreneurial Skills Program (ESP) has quickly grown into a flourishingcompany for Reynolds and his partners. Established in April 2003,QuickSnap produces a two-piece durable plastic clip that eliminates theneed to tie shoe laces. The innovative product is adjustable, fits anylaced shoe and ensures that laces never come undone.

With this new investment, the five-year old company is poised to growthrough increased promotional efforts and exposure to the public. Thefunding will go toward marketing the product and expanding thecompany’s current distribution network.

“Being on the program Dragons’ Den will push us to the next level,”added McKenna. “During the show we received a commitment fromDragon Brett Wilson to supply every Canadian troop currently servingoverseas with QuickSnap – his enthusiasm for the product is ademonstration that the possibilities for growth are limitless.”

Peter Murchland, BPR ’93, is using his media skills, honed at the Mount, to promote his new business. He has designed an innovative deck privacy system –PrivacyWrap – literally from his home in Halifax. Ittransforms an ordinary deck or patio into a beautifully-appointed, private, outdoor living space.

With its patent pending, the idea for PrivacyWrap cameout of a personal need. Last year, Murchland and hiswife moved to a new house with great neighbours butwith an open backyard. “We wanted some privacy onour deck but we didn’t want to completely shut out our neighbours with a tall, permanent fence,” saidMurchland, “so we created a semi-permanent solution.”

PrivacyWrap is made from a variety of specially-designed outdoor fabric panels and mountingaccessories inspired by Nova Scotia’s marineenvironment. The system is decorative, customizable,semi-permanent, cost-effective and easy to install.

PrivacyWrap has been featured on CTV’s Live at Fiveand in Canadian House & Home magazine.

“I have saved mybusiness a lot ofexpense by handling thecommunications andpromotion ofPrivacyWrap myself, andas I begin to focus onproduct branding I willbe drawing on my Mounteducation even more.”
