This t ime of year , the commercial izat ion of the hol idays can be enough to make your head spin.

Endless sales and the sometimes overwhelming pressure to buy gi f ts for everyone in your l i fe

can turn giv ing into a less-than-pleasant exper ience.

Slow down and let go of expectations. As Christmas approaches we become harr ied and frazzled.   There’s a plethora of g i f ts to buy,

events to go to and pressure to get everything “ just r ight” .   By the t ime Christmas arr ives we’re

left feel ing drained and s ick. Last year I made the decis ion to s low down during December by

committ ing to fewer events and lett ing go of certain expectat ions l ike Christmas baking. Making

this decis ion was f reeing and i t gave our family t ime to truly enjoy Advent and Christmas

together.

Buy fewer gifts.I t takes courage to step away from the commercial ism that surrounds Christmas. Start ing in

November we’re bombarded with constant pressure to buy more, that more stuf f wi l l make

everyone happier . I t is a lovely thing to g ive a wel l thought-out g i f t , especial ly when there is a

need, but there are other ways to show kindness, love and generosity without having to buy a

plethora of presents.

·   Give the g i f t of adventure (ski lessons, a ski pass, rock c l imbing lessons) .

·   G ive the g i f t of t ime (a mom-daughter night out , a special date night) .

·   G i v e t h e g i f t o f s e r v i c e ( c h i l d c a r e , h o m e m a d e m e a l s , m a s s a g e ) .

One of the most di f f icult parts of Chr istmas can be try ing to think of fun, unique ideas for your k ids. I f you need a l i t t le help s impl i fy ing your l ist this year , I ’ve got a great way for you to do just that . I cal l i t Want,Wear, Need and Read. Instead of loading up on a shopping cart ful l of toys, hal f of which your k id wi l l forget about by New Year ’s Day,try replacing them with a few other things.Let ’s start with the want.This is where the one toy, game or gadget your k id has been dying to have f i ts in . This is the Mal ibu Barbie, theElmo dol l , the Death Star Legos set and so on. I t ’s probably the “biggie” on their l ist , so i f i t works in yourbudget, then start there. Next , buy something your chi ld wi l l wear.I t ’s wintert ime, so you might go for a new winter jacket or vest . Or i t might be t ime to replace your k id’s shoes. After that , buy something your chi ld needs.Maybe i t ’s t ime to upgrade the old Ninja Turt le backpack or something else they use at school . This might not bethe most g lamorous gi f t , but i t wi l l be pract ical and useful . F inal ly , buy a book your chi ld can read.I t ’s a lways a great idea to encourage a love for reading, so use Christmas as another opportunity to do that .Write the date in the book so they’ l l a lways know when they received i t .This short four-part l ist is a great way to keep you focused on what to g ive without going overboard. Plus, youcan f ind inexpensive stuf f (or as expensive as you l ike) in a l l four categories.G i v e t h e W a n t , W e a r , N e e d a n d R e a d l i s t a t r y t h i s C h r i s t m a s a n d s e e h o w i t w o r k s f o r y o u r f a m i l y !

Instead of buying them, why not make them?

Handmade gifts are often much less expensive thanstore bought gifts and children really enjoy making

them.

These days there are many wonderful ideas forhandmade gifts on the internet and in books.

Choose something simple that you can do with your

children.
