“What do I need to know and do to prepare a
NAOME Fellow application?”
“How do I begin the process?”
1. Applicants should
familiarize themselves
with the application
materials.
2. Four key elements to
the application.
3. Most time intensive
component is the
‘Educational Portfolio’.
“What are the
elements of
the process?”
1. General guidelines and information with a webinar on
creating a mini-portfolio.
2. “Do’s & Don’ts” along with commons mistakes.
3. Specific guidelines for each category of educational
scholarship.
“Are there any guidelines for putting my
portfolio together?”
1. The “Do’s and Don’ts” section of the
“Portfolio Preparation” tab has very
helpful examples of the common
mistakes made when preparing a
portfolio.
2. Three BIG errors to avoid…
a. Applying in the wrong category
of educational scholarship.
b. Poorly organized portfolio that is
difficult to follow for someone
that does not know you.
c. Evidence and statements in the
portfolio are not clearly linked.
“Any advise on what to do and what not to do?”
1. Teaching & Evaluation
“preparation and delivery of lectures”
2. Development of Enduring Educational Materials
“may include authoring a textbook or chapter”
3. Educational Leadership
“significant leadership in curriculum development or
education-related administration”
4. Educational Research
“investigation of specific education-related questions
and dissemination of the results”
“What constitutes educational scholarship?”
“Who is evaluating my
portfolio?”
“What is the selection
committee looking for?
“How will my portfolio
be evaluated?”
“Who…What….and How is this all going to work?”
YES!
“Can anybody help me with all of this?”
What is it that you have valued most about
being a NAOME Fellow?“The opportunity to build relationships / network with academic leaders within our
profession….sharing ideas / challenging one another / offering feedback / provide support.”
“I most value the inter-campus community - the camaraderie and collaboration that occurs among
fellows. I also value the ability to contribute substantively to the profession as a group with impact
that individuals rarely have.”
“I feel it has been an honor to be a NAOME fellow knowing that I was selected by a group of my
peers through an extensive review process which affirms quality and significance of the efforts
made to contribute too many areas of medical education.”
“Opportunity to network and collaborate with experts in the field of medical education. Often in a
medical school environment there are a limited number of colleagues truly invested in the
scholarship of education. NAOME provides a wonderful network of like-minded individuals, yet
with varied insights and perspectives to share.”
“Working with amazing educators with like-minded goals from different institutions. I have
learned so much from the educators and leaders within NAOME.”
Since becoming a member, what have you seen
as the academy’s impactful accomplishments?
“Showcasing the importance of building bridges throughout / across our profession.”
“By far the most impact has been a real valuing (particularly at some schools which have
embraced the Academy as important) of educators.”
“I value being a part of a national group dedicated to excellence in medical education for the
present and future healthcare providers. I have found that I have been given as well as can provide
collegial support and mentorship from and to others who share a passion for quality and
innovations in medical education.”
“Becoming a recognized organization with established bylaws. Establishing a credible process for
fellow application and selection.”
“Contribution to the profession. NAOME fellows contribute to many aspects of the annual
AACOM meeting, including grant and abstract review. The discussion and development of best
practices and innovative teaching tools to share across institutions has also made a direct impact
on my teaching style and philosophies.”
What has being part of NAOME meant to you?
“It has motivated me to “step it up, to keep up.”
“I'm super proud of NAOME - I feel very honored to be among peers whom I respect and
learn from.”
“Accomplishments for NAOME: Created a recognized cadre of quality and engaged members!
This group leads and provides input to important issues and events, such as the AACOM
educational and poster grant reviews. This group also provides a platform to share our
challenges and successes.”
“I am certainly proud to be a member and serve as secretary to the organization. As the
fellowship grows I think the potential for significant impact will be further realized. I look
forward to being part of that growth.”
“Becoming a NAOME fellow was one of the best professional decisions I have made. Being
part of this outstanding group has strengthened my educational abilities and goals. It is
invigorating to work with NAOME fellows who I admire and respect and to be able to
contribute to our common goal of educating outstanding osteopathic physicians.”
