INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION

TECHNOLOGY VIDEOS

INTRODUCTION AND NOTE:

The main objective of these ten videos is to acquire the knowledge,

understanding, and application of essential concepts in construction

technology. For this purpose, these videos should not only explain

essential concepts and theory but also, should, practically demonstrate

the step by step procedures in the construction of an actual 10ft by 10 ft

guard house with seven windows, three doors, toilet and wash basin.

The goal is that these videos should transfer essential practical skill in

construction technology to participants.

The format below should be considered as a guideline for the

development of videos.

practical examples have been given in the material below, these should

not block the creativity of video producers to add examples, additional

theory, and illustrations, to meet the requirements for the essential

content for each video, as well as to meet the necessary terms of

reference for the production of videos.

The associated support material given below should serve to provide

direction and where necessary, should be supplemented according to the

requirements of the essential content of the videos. Further, where

applicable, the content of videos could be arranged such as to best fit the

needs of the users, and the intended application of the videos.

Apart from using the Subject Specialist to assist in writing video

scripts, the producers should hire the individuals with technical and

practical skills in order to create quality output.

(Using Guard House Project)

IDENTIFICATION, SELECTION AND PREPARATION OF SITE(Steps to be observed)

Preliminary Site investigation:

1  - Establish land ownership – Check with TITLE’S OFFICE for details.

2  - Access to the property - The site should have clear means ( roads, pathways)-  Access to the property.

3  - Perform Soil Test - A soil test must be done to determine the nature and the

load bearing capacity of the soil.4  - Availability of services - The availability of electricity and water service, is

an important factor to consider. The distance from other facilities such as

hospital, bank, supermarkets etc are also factors to be considered.5  - Area Specification: determine Zone Limitations and. Building Code for the

zones6  - Topography and Land history - The topography and history of any siteis important. It will aid in determining the equipment needs

to get the site ready for construction. The history of the site will also aid in

determining the effect of weather, flooding, water resources, landslide issues

etc.7  - Environmental Standards : The Site and construction must meet the

environmental standards.

Site Plan and Interpretation of Drawings:

The drawings should include; (APPENDIX A)i.  Site

ii.  Floor

iii.  Foundationiv.  Roof

v.  Drainage

vi.  ElectricalAll the above drawings should be in accordance with the standard code used by the

local authority.

•  Create a surface for building to be laid out

The striping of the site and creating a hardcore layer for construction is a standard

procedure.

•  Acquire relevant tools or machines neededi.  Backhoe

•  Obtain relevant skilled personsi.  Skilled trades-men

ii.  Labourers

•  Prepare footing for first layer of blocks

Step 1

Demonstrate different types of blocks available. Choose the correct blocks for the job.For the most part, you can use regular-sized cement blocks for the most of the block

wall. To complete the course of blocks, you may need special block sizes. You can also

cut blocks to fit the course as necessary.

Step 2

Lay the proper footing. At the minimum, the footing should be twice as wide as the

blocks and twice as deep.

Page 14: Building Technology Construction Video Contents

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/building-technology-construction-video-contents 14/34

  14

Step 3

Purchase your blocks. The standard size block is 8 inches by 16 inches. Remember topurchase any specialty blocks you may need. Also, purchase /prepare your mortar.

Step 4

Build a guideline for your wall. Drive stakes of wood at each corner and tie string to

them. Place the stakes in line where you want the course of block to run.

Step 5

Set blocks in place for the first row of the course. Use a piece of scrap 3/8-inch plywood

as a marker between each block. This is the same thickness as the mortar between the

 joints should be.

Step 6

Adjust the concrete blocks to get the right sizes to complete the first row of blocks. Applythe mortar about 1 inch thick and about 8 inches wide on the footing. Set the blocks on it

in a straight line.

•  Establish level before placing additional layers

•  Laying of electrical conduits, water and drainage pippes

•  Lay required layers

Construction and installation of roof

Roof terms

i.  Define the term roofs.

ii.  The purpose and features of roofs .

1.  To keep out rain, wind snow and dust

2.  To prevent excessive heat loss in winter

3.  To keep the interior of the building cool in the summer4.  To keep unwanted elements out.

5.  designed to accommodate all stresses encountered

6.  designed to accept movement due to change in temperature and moisture

content

iii.  Identify the types of roofs and roof members.

Roofs are design taking into consideration the climate of the region, and the

structure of the building.

iv.  Identify and define roof members1. Ridge board This is the spine of the roof, and is a pitching plate for the rafters,

which are nailed to each other through the ridge board. The

depth of the ridge board is determined by the pitch of the roof.

2. Common Rafter The main load-bearing member of the roof  is the common rafter.

It spans between the wall plate and the ridge board.

3. Jack Rafter These are fillers. They serve the same function as the common

rafter but span between the ridge board and valley rafter OR hip

rafter and wall plate.

4. Hip Rafter Similar to the common rafter, as they run from the ridge board to

the wall plate. They are different in that they form the external

angle in a Hip roof.

5. Wall plates These provide the bearing and fixing medium for all the various

roof members and distribute the load equally to the supportingwalls.

6. Eave This is the lowest edge of the roof. It forms the overhang to the

wall and gives protection from rain water. The amount ofprojection from the wall ranges between 300 mm – 450 mm.
