Our 2016 Annual Report theme recognizes that Genacross Lutheran Services continues “Building on our Past” as we are “Embracing our Future.” The headline news for 2016 was that the organization went through a rebranding process that culminated in our new name. We did not make this decision lightly; the new name recognizes our desire to serve people of many different generations as an expression of the Church.

Beyond our familiar care campuses, affordable senior housing communities, and family and youth services, we continued to expand our service offerings in 2016. One substantial area of growth includes wellness initiatives that help individuals remain healthy and active. Our therapy team provided community wellness clinics at numerous Genacross locations, led more than 50 SilverSneakers® exercise classes at more than 25 locations each week, and began offering Delay the Disease™ group exercise to help people combat the debilitating effects of movement disorders.

In addition, the Genacross Adult Day Center reached its one-year anniversary in September. The Adult Day Center continues to grow steadily and offers a valuable resource for caregivers and participants alike. We also introduced a nurse mentoring program, which is providing a significant support system for our faithful and compassionate nursing staff.

As always, quality care and services remained a top priority. We continued to implement processes that ensure top quality care, and “perfect” surveys at several of our assisted living communities and high survey scores at our care centers reflected the hard work and commitment of our employees. To honor our employees, the organization held its first ministry-wide Staff Appreciation and Recognition event in August. During the evening, numerous employees were recognized for their years of employment as well as outstanding service to others.

In 2016, God blessed Genacross Lutheran Services with the opportunity to serve 3,390 residents, patients, and clients, with 983 staff.  Furthermore, 897 volunteers provided 19,364 hours of service to individuals in our care, enhancing their lives in countless ways. Genacross Lutheran Services also provided $5.2 million in charitable care and community benefit.

We are grateful to the congregations and individuals who have shared this ministry through their volunteering, contributions, and prayers of support. God has richly blessed us with many opportunities to serve God’s people and to do so with you.

Thanks Be to God!

Changing the organization’s name from Lutheran Homes Society to Genacross Lutheran Services leads the highlights for 2016. The name change was preceded by the unveiling of new Mission and Vision statements earlier in the year (see back page), and came about after months of research and planning. The new name acknowledges that the 156-year-old organization, which began serving orphans and then seniors, has expanded its care and services in order to remain a viable and effective provider in today’s changing health care environment. It also reflects how we currently touch the lives of people across many generations as we continue to honor the Christian principles that guide us. The structure and leadership of the organization remains the same, and Genacross Lutheran Services maintains the support of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, and nearly 170 Lutheran congregations across the region.

Genacross Lutheran Services, then Lutheran Homes Society, held its first ministry-wide Staff Appreciation and Recognition event in August 2016. Nearly 120 employees and their guests had the opportunity to enjoy dinner, an awards ceremony, and a Toledo Mud Hens game at Fifth Third Field in downtown Toledo. During the event, 28 employees were recognized for their years of service, ranging from 15 to 40 years. They received mini baseball bats engraved with their names and years of employment. The event also recognized the organization’s LeadingAge Ohio Stars Award winners, who received mini bats engraved with

Meeting the state of Ohio’s standards for excellent assisted living care is no simple task, but the Wolf Creek Campus in Holland, the Napoleon Campus, and Bethany Place senior community in Fremont did just that and more. In fact, all three sites earned deficiency-free ratings on their 2016 assisted living surveys from the Ohio Department of Health (ODH). These “perfect” surveys reflect the hard work and ongoing commitment by staff to provide quality care and services. A significant part of the ODH survey involves talking with residents, so the high marks also validate that residents are having an overwhelmingly positive experience in our care. In addition, Bethany Place assisted living was ranked first in Sandusky County on the biennial Resident Satisfaction Survey, conducted by the Ohio Department of Aging.

“Outstanding Employee.” That evening, Genacross also introduced three employee awards that will be presented annually. The inaugural award winners were: Amanda Karamol, Business Office Coordinator at the Wolf Creek Campus, for Minister to Others; Jason Beyer, Program Coordinator at the Oregon Treatment Facility at Family & Youth Services, for Servant Leader; and Brittany Boyd, Activity Aide at the Genacross Adult Day Center, for Employee of the Year.

genacross therapy expands wellness initiativesFor several years now, Genacross Therapy Services has provided inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation at our four long-term care campuses in Holland, Napoleon, Sandusky and Toledo. While rehabilitation services continue to grow, the therapy team has focused considerable effort on expanding wellness initiatives that help individuals live more healthy and active lives. The initiatives include wellness clinics, SilverSneakers® exercise classes, Delay the Disease™ group fitness classes for movement disorders, and education on various disease processes. Therapists provide the monthly wellness clinics at 12 Genacross locations, and many of the clinics are held in conjunction with SilverSneakers exercise classes. These classes are primarily cardio and strength training, but there are a few walking programs and aquatics classes offered, as well. Overall, our therapists led more than 50 exercise classes at more than 25 Genacross and community-based locations each week.

In September 2016, the Genacross Adult Day Center (ADC) marked one year of service to the community. Located on the campus of the Warren AME Church and adjacent to the J. Frank Troy Senior Center near downtown Toledo, the ADC served 25 participants in 2016. The ADC provides a cost-effective way to help individuals with physical needs and/or memory loss thrive in a secure setting. Following a medical care model, it provides expert health services with social and therapeutic activities for a complete, caring approach that is individualized for each participant and provides ongoing peace of mind for caregivers. The adult day program continues to expand as Genacross Lutheran Services explores additional ways to make the services available to more people in need.

nurse mentor program begins on care campusesGenacross Lutheran Services began implementing a Mentor Program within the nursing departments of its long-term care campuses. Both nurses and nursing assistants participate in the mentoring. The program guides new employees through a critical two- to four-week initial training period. The mentors work closely with new personnel to achieve competency on a list of essential clinical skills, while also providing an important support system as they acclimate to the organization. The program also empowers the mentors, who have a tendency to take ownership of the program and experience a greater sense of connection to the facility. While the program serves as a tool to gauge the performance of new employees, it is also designed to help boost employee retention across the board. The Wolf Creek and Napoleon campuses implemented the program in 2016 and have seen positive results early on. The Mentor Program is in the initial stages of development at the Toledo and Sandusky campuses.

Mentors at the Napoleon Campus see many benefits from the nurse mentoring program. Plans are underway to expand it to all the care campuses.

Vera Schrein, a 95-year-old-woman living in Maumee, Ohio, has a unique connection to the ministry of Genacross Lutheran Services. Not only did she live in the Lutheran Orphans’ Home in her youth, but she also recently received rehabilitation services on the Genacross Lutheran Services-Wolf Creek Campus. Mrs. Schrein, then known as Vera Lentz, came to live at the orphanage in August 1930 at the age of 8, when her family became divided during the Great Depression. The orphanage, which was run by Lutheran sisters, was her home for the next seven years. It was a busy life with schooling, chores, church, and many fun times. At the age of 15, she left the Home to become a nanny. Of her time at the orphanage, Vera said that she was given wonderful care. “Living at the Lutheran orphanage was the best thing that could have happened to me under the circumstances,” she added.

Fast forward many years…marriage...children…aging with humor and grace…to 2016 when Vera needed rehabilitation services following an illness. She told her family the organization had taken good care of her when she was a child, so she wanted to return for her rehab. Vera spent a couple of weeks in short-term rehabilitation at the Wolf Creek Campus. She and her family were pleased with “the care and concern” she received while there. Genacross is grateful to have provided unwavering service to Vera at very different points in her long life.

health center for a short period of time. During his stay, he met with his attorney to change his will and trust. On the advice of his attorney and as a result of the care received while at Wolf Creek, he stipulated in his will that a portion of his trust be given to Genacross Lutheran Services. The $650,000 undesignated gift was received and placed in the Genacross Lutheran Services Foundation Endowment to be used for non-budgeted special projects. In addition, he gave Genacross 86 acres of property to be used as the organization wishes. That property is being farmed, and Genacross Lutheran Services receives an annual income from the proceeds of the harvest.

All of us, as stakeholders in Genacross Lutheran Services, have opportunities to tell the stories of the organization: the supportive, loving care given by staff; the superior medical

A mother of a Family & Youth Services resident shared her son’s story at the 2016 Genacross Lutheran Services

Foundation Donor Appreciation Dinner. Donors listened as she described how she was told numerous times by other treatment programs that they could not help her son, who had multiple diagnoses resulting in extreme behaviors. Left with few resources and little hope, she finally discovered the Genacross Family & Youth program. With patience, perseverance, and love, caregivers worked with her son for a number of years. She also spoke of the huge impact of the Partners in Treatment weekend program on their family. Eventually, she and her son experienced healing, and she praised the dedicated work of the therapists, caregivers, and

Early in life, Sarah was diagnosed with numerous behavioral disorders and had displayed attention-seeking conduct that often led to aggressive acts such as spitting, punching, kicking, and the destruction of property. After many failed placements and detention stays, she was placed with Genacross Family & Youth Services. Initially, Sarah continued the same destructive behaviors she had displayed in other settings. Staff knew she would need consistent structure, regular counseling, and innovative approaches to treatment in order for her to experience real healing. Sarah and her family participated each month in Family & Youth’s unique Partners in Treatment weekend program, which focuses on building and strengthening family relationships in hope of reuniting the youth into their family homes. Her treatment plan also included hippotherapy (equestrian therapy).

Sarah showed slow, but consistent improvement. Her aggressive outbursts occurred less often, and she was able to apply the coping skills that staff worked so hard to teach her. Sarah made so much progress that she transitioned to a less restrictive Family & Youth setting. In addition, when she graduated from the equestrian therapy program, she continued taking horseback riding lessons, an activity she thrives at and loves dearly. In fact, this past August, Sarah participated in two

equestrian events at the state-level Special Olympics. She won a bronze medal in riding and a gold medal in the competition for leading a horse. These were fantastic accomplishments for Sarah and evidence of how far she has come in her care and treatment. Her parents feel that Sarah has reached a level of improvement they never imagined, and they are grateful for her progress and achievements.

Sarah and her family have participated in innovative programs that promote healing.

Elmer and Evelyn Moenter were active volunteers and donors to Lutheran Homes Society, now Genacross Lutheran Services. They lived in Oregon, Ohio,

and attended St. Mark Lutheran Church in Toledo. Evelyn served eight years as a member of the Lutheran Homes Society Board of Directors. She also served on the Toledo Ministry Board. When both Elmer and Evelyn passed away, their daughter honored their wishes and sent a distribution from their estate to Genacross Lutheran Services to be used as the Board determined. “My mother served on the board for many years and felt a passionate connection to the ministry there; please feel free to use the money for any special need you might have,” stated Sandra, the Moenter’s daughter.

In 2016, Genacross Lutheran Services received a total of $977,290 in bequests from estate trusts, perpetual trusts, and other planned gifts bequeathed by faithful donors who place Genacross Lutheran Services in their trust documents and wills.

“A loved one entering a care facility is one of the most heart-wrenching decisions anyone is forced to make. Words cannot adequately explain the range of emotions that are forced upon you.” This sentiment, shared by Marilyn Ulrich, described her decision to transition her husband, Forrest, from their home to assisted living care

at the Genacross Lutheran Services-Toledo Campus. She worried, in part, because she believed her husband was giving up his independence. That changed, however, with the help of the assisted living staff. “I call them God’s Angels,” Marilyn said. “They go above and beyond to help with smiles, laughter, and hugs.”

Staff members recognize that most people coming into assisted living are giving up some sort of independence, but they strive to provide a more hopeful and positive outlook. They work hard to achieve a home-like atmosphere, where most of the residents can maintain a level of independence – some still have their driver’s licenses and vehicles – yet have the luxury of nursing care, if needed. Forrest adjusted well to his new apartment, and Marilyn visits daily. “I’m thankful how wonderfully all the people who are employed at this facility attend to the needs of my husband and the residents,” Marilyn said.

With compassion and a pervasive sense of optimism, we’re dedicated to changing lives for the better.

The hopeful outlook of caregivers benefits Forrest and Marilyn Ulrich.

Over the years, designated contributions to the Sandusky Campus have included generous donations from employees who have given both money

and in-kind gifts. One recently retired staff member, who wishes to remain anonymous, has exhibited his love for the residents, their family members, and staff through his generous giving. While working one day, he noticed that a water fountain was not functioning. There was no other water fountain close by, and since he did not want residents, their families, or staff to be inconvenienced walking to other areas of the building, he paid for the repair out of his own pocket. Another time, he observed dirty carpeting and purchased a carpet cleaning machine to fix the problem. When a washing machine broke down, he purchased and donated a new one.

This anonymous donor has contributed nearly $2,500 of in-kind gifts and over $2,000 in monetary donations. We thank this donor for his tremendous, generous support.

We’re Generation READYToday, we serve people of all ages with programs that foster wellness in many areas of life.

Genacross Lutheran Services is ready to assist people with different levels of care through the many chapters of their lives. For example, Genacross ministries have served resident/patient David Thurston in several ways. He has already been admitted to the Genacross Lutheran Services-Sandusky Campus three times after unexpected hospital stays. David is familiar with Genacross Lutheran Services, not only from his short-term rehab stays, but because he lives at Luther Oaks, a Genacross independent living apartment community in Norwalk, Ohio. David truly adores living at Luther Oaks and appreciates the safe environment, the friendly neighbors, and the on-site housing manager and service coordinator.

The Sandusky Campus welcomed David each time he came there for rehabilitation, and the staff did everything possible to make his stay feel like home. “Everyone is nice and has good personalities,” David commented. “They will help you with anything!” Besides praising the nursing and dietary departments, he said that it is “hard to beat” the therapists. “I can tell that I am improving when I am here,” David added. When he is ready to return to his apartment again, David will receive services from Northwest Ohio Home Care Partners, the Genacross home health agency. While he wants to stay at home for as long as possible, David knows he will return to the Sandusky Campus if he needs more care or services.

Several Genacross ministries are ready to serve David Thurston.

collaborate with Christ the King School in Toledo. The Foundation sponsored service days for the students at two Genacross housing sites. Eight students participated in two different service opportunities with residents of Luther Crest and Luther Woods senior communities. During one service day, the students assisted residents with weeding and trimming the areas around residents’ patios. During the second service day in October, the students baked cookies with residents. Three stations were set up, with each station baking a different kind of cookie. When the baking was completed, students sampled and were able to take cookies home to their families. The students left saying they enjoyed the people and helping. “We’d like to come here again,” several students said.

Veda Martin has many health issues that have made life difficult. In addition, she has been homeless, relying on friends and the local shelter for a roof over her head. Suffering from depression and recognizing that she needed help, Veda was admitted to a hospital in August 2016 and then transferred to a nursing facility for additional care. As she was getting ready to leave the nursing facility in October, Veda enrolled in the HOME Choice program. A Service Coordinator from Genacross Housing & Community Services was assigned to support her successful transition to community living.

Compelled by our faith, we have grown to meet the needs of all generations, with compassionate care and real-world solutions.

Veda was a very proactive client, and she made frequent contact with the coordinator to check on progress. She knew what she wanted and was prepared with the pertinent information that she needed to resolve issues. It was not smooth sailing all the time, but Veda’s organizational skills made the steps in the lengthy process much easier. One of her biggest obstacles was bad debt. Veda and the coordinator worked diligently to settle an old, unpaid electric account that was preventing her from getting electric service in her name. Once resolved, Veda was able to sign an apartment lease. When the coordinator went to pick her up on moving day, Veda was ready. There were complications with the delivery of some of her durable medical equipment, but they worked together through the setback. Veda’s coordinator was motivated to help her succeed and inspired by Veda’s hands-on nature. The coordinator helped Veda resolve old debt; find, furnish, and stock an apartment; and arrange for services that will make her successful in her new home. Veda is thankful for the guidance and support she received during this transition.

A generous gift was received from the daughter of a resident who expressed her gratitude for the wonderful care given to her mother at a time when

the family was exhausted, discouraged, and felt like they had run out of options. They had placed their mom in another facility after she was discharged from the hospital. The nursing home was depressing, and it was discouraging for their mom. “We needed to find another place for her that would address her needs and actively work with her to improve her outlook on life and her physical health,” stated the resident’s daughter. “Napoleon turned out to be that place.” She continued: “The staff took the time needed to take care of my mom in the way that I would if I could have her at home. The family is so grateful to everyone at Napoleon who made my mom a priority and who went above and beyond what we could have expected. A sincere thank you to all. We want to give back some of what was given our mom. Please accept this gift for the Napoleon home.”

In 1999, David Seedorf was injured when a tree fell on him at work, paralyzing him from the waist down. Over the years, he developed pressure ulcers and needed assistance. A year and a half ago, David came to the point where he had to choose a facility for wound care. He was very intimidated, because he had not had very positive experiences in the past at several other facilities. After talking at the hospital with a Genacross Lutheran Services representative, who listened to his preferences and opinions, he chose to be admitted to the Genacross Lutheran Services-Napoleon Campus. David was assured that he would be seen by specialists at the Napoleon Campus who would optimize his wound care and healing.

While at the Napoleon Campus, Certified Nurse Practitioner Karen Bauer, RN, from The University of Toledo Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center, worked diligently with the nursing staff on David’s care plan. According to David, what separated the Napoleon Campus from his previous experiences was the staff’s compassionate care and extensive knowledge. “They excelled in all areas, including transporting me to my appointments, processing my worker’s compensation insurance, and keeping me informed on all aspects of

my care,” David explained. Because the staff listened to him and communicated with him, David said he truly had to do very little. “They did it all,” he said, “and now I am going home.”

Our dedication to caring has stood the test of time, and our employees’ personal commitment to treating others with kindness sets us apart.

The compassionate care of staff impresses David Seedorf (center).

Genacross Lutheran Services consists of a corporate membership of 169 Lutheran congregations in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. These congregations are valued partners in our ministry to “embrace individuals and families with compassionate care and services throughout life’s journey.” A few have been with us from the beginning. Many have been with us for years. Numerous churches support our ministry in some way. However, all of our member congregations hold Genacross Lutheran Services accountable and inspire us to follow the Lutheran tradition of service to those in need. We appreciate your ongoing support and are blessed by your confidence in our mission.

covenant partners actively support our work Through Genacross Lutheran Services’ Covenant Partner Program, congregations have an opportunity to express their intentional support of our ministries in a variety of ways. This commitment often includes congregation members serving on a board; volunteering at one of our sites; sponsoring a Genacross program, activity or project; or giving financially through budgeted gifts or special offerings. Your support means a great deal to us and the people we serve. Much of what we do at Genacross Lutheran Services would not be possible without your commitment. Thank you.

volunteers embrace helping othersGenacross Lutheran Services was richly blessed by the numerous volunteers who generously served our ministries in 2016. Throughout the organization’s long history, volunteers have played a significant role in enhancing the lives of our residents, and this tradition continues today. Behind the scenes, some provide leadership and expertise on the Board of Directors and ministry boards, while others enable Genacross to be better stewards of our resources. Additionally, hundreds of volunteers spend valuable time with residents and patients to provide the extra touches that make living at our ministries more like home.

Every day, our volunteers enrich lives through such activities as planting flowers to beautify our grounds, leading Bible studies to nourish the spirit, playing games to engage residents, hosting birthday parties to celebrate life, or simply having a conversation to show a resident that someone cares. They meet individuals where they are and help them embrace a future that can include moments of laughter and joy and days filled with healing and caring relationships. We are grateful for the volunteers, past and present, who have chosen to embrace our ministry.

charitable care and community benefit for individuals in need exceeds $5 millionThe mission of Genacross Lutheran Services has always included providing care to the underserved – historically youth and elders. As the scope of who we serve has broadened, our commitment to serving those in need has not diminished. In fact, Genacross provided $5.2 million in charitable care and community benefit in 2016.

“This is the most we have ever spent in one year to ensure individuals receive necessary care, housing, and services,” said Chief Financial Officer Lorinda Schalk. “We have seen our uncompensated care increase more than $440,000 in 2016,” she stated.

Through charitable care, Genacross subsidizes the cost of care for residents who do not have the means to pay and meet certain financial criteria. Through community benefit, Genacross provides care and services to the uninsured, underinsured, low–income, and indigent residents. Community benefit can be defined as the difference between our cost of services and the rates paid by third party insurers, including private pay and government agencies.

As a not-for-profit organization, we also provide or participate in numerous educational and community-based programs that improve the overall health and wellness of the communities we serve. Genacross is committed to embracing individuals and families, and improving their lives for the better.

Genacross Lutheran Services, established in 1860 and most recently known as Lutheran Homes Society, serves individuals and families throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. Our Family & Youth Services ministry provides residential and community-based treatment options, alternate learning environments, family support services, outpatient mental health services, and developmental disability services to children, youth, families, and adults. Our Housing & Community Services ministry features 12 independent living senior apartment communities located throughout our service area. Genacross also provides its housing residents as well as community members with service coordination, which helps older adults access needed programs and services that allow them to maintain their independent, self-reliant lifestyles. The Genacross Adult Day Center in Toledo provides adult day services for individuals with physical limitations and/or memory issues. Our four care campuses offer independent living, assisted living, long-term care, inpatient rehabilitation services, and outpatient therapy. Northwest Ohio Home Care Partners, our home health agency, extends the organization’s continuum of care by providing skilled nursing and therapy for patients of all ages in the comfort of their own homes.
