Building Family in Home Community (HC)

The focus of HCs this fall is developing a Family of Servant Missionaries. Through our activities and meetings let us think through: How can we build a family environment like Jesus did with His disciples? Ephesians: to help become a Family of Servant Missionaries, we will study Ephesians. The questions will focus on basic Bible study methods: Observation, Interpretation, and Application. Our goal each week is the Application of God’s word in community.

Ephesians 5:3-21

1. Observation / Interpretation: Identify the prohibitions and exhortations of Eph. 5:3-20. Wrestle together as a group with accurately interpreting the prohibitions and exhortations of this passage.

2. Application: What are the prohibitions / exhortations of this passage

that apply to you and why? Spend time in confession and prayer to and with one another, asking the Spirit of God to transform you.

Children’s Church application questions: 2 Kings 2:1-15, 1 Corinthians 10:31,

1. What did Elisha ask from Elijah before Elijah was taken up to heaven? 2. Why did Elisha keep telling the sons of the prophets to keep quiet?

What do you think Elisha was feeling? Do you think they might have been best buds?

3. What characteristics or habits of your parent(s) do you want to possess or do when you become an adult? Why?

GOSPEL awareness

Satan’s strategy:

A. Question GOD’s character B. Talk about GOD instead of to GOD C. Create mistrust D. Live independently E. Isolate you

Eph 5:21 – A Call for All Christians to Submit Out of Love for Christ Ephesians 5:21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Eph 5:22-24 -- A Call for Wives to Submit as Christ Submitted

Ephesians 5:22-24 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

Eph 5:25-28 – A Call for Husbands to Love and Lead Like Christ

Ephesians 25

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up

for her, 26

that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,

27 so that he might present the church to himself in

splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

[a] 28

In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

Eph 5:29-33 – Husbands & Wives Are One Flesh and Equal Value

Ephesians 5:29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church,30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh” (quoting Gen 2:24). 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

The Four Loves

1. Storge: Familial Love and Affection 2. Philadelphia: Friendship 3. Eros: Romantic Love 4. Agape: Sacrificial Love

How Christ Loves His Church

1. As Head: He’s Our Leader 2. As Sacrificial Giver & Provider: He Gave Himself Up 3. As Nourisher & Cherisher: He Builds Us Up

Egalitarianism vs. Complementarianism Egalitarianism: Men and Women Are Interchangeable – Gender Plays No

Part in Defining Our Role Complementarianism: Men and Women Are Equally Valuable with

Complementary Skills – Gender Is Designed by God for a Reason

“Oikos” Network: Christianity Redefines the Household “Code” – Placing Great Responsibility on Husbands and Elevating Wives

What Does it Mean for a Wife to Be Christ-Like? Christ-like submission does NOT mean that a wife is less valuable,

intelligent, or competent than her husband Christ-like submission does NOT mean that men, in general, are to be ruling

over women in general: one wife submits to one man, her husband. Christ-like submission does NOT mean that the wife ignores her husband’s

flaws. Respecting her husband is a wife’s duty.

What Does it Mean for a Husband to Be Christ-Like?

The Question is NOT whether or not you are a leader -- you are. The only

question is, are you a good leader or a bad one? Being a Husband is a burden God intended men to carry. Lead by Example Keep your word Build her up!
