Overview

! Develop a data set to help determine the cost effectiveness of energy codes.

! Tool goal is to serve as a central Department of Energy (DOE) repository for building component cost data.

! BC3 will also be a collaborative tool designed to assist cost estimators, builders, architects, and engineers to accurately evaluate the possible cost of an energy efficient component.

! Other features will allow feedback from the community on cost accuracy and stretch component costs (unusual EEMs).

BC3 Strategy

! Data collection will focus on a range of cost data. This will allow an average cost or median cost for evaluation.

! This approach will provide flexibility to deal with data bias from different sources and a richer data set for mining.

Data Collection

! Faithful and Gould, national cost estimation firm, selected to provide component level cost data.

! Existing data from other public sources will be incorporated: ! ASHRAE subcommittees [1] ! DEER (state of CA database for code development) [2] ! Other DOE sources, examples include:

! National Residential Efficiency Measures Database [3] ! Cool roofs calculator [4]

! DOE partners (Building America, CBP, BECP, others) will have a mechanism to submit actual cost information to the database.

Draft Database Structure

! Schema is based on review of industry naming conventions including gbXML, ASHRAE, and other tools.

! Schema will include industry standard cost code data.

User interface “Wiki"

! The web interface has been designed to allow users to collaborate and view cost data.

! The framework is based on the PNNL Knowledge Encapsulation Framework (KEF). KEF is a suite of tools to enable subject-matter experts to discover, gather, and arrange evidence and other material in support of modeling and simulation projects, as well as other domains that require collaborative workspaces for knowledge-work [6].

Invitation to Collaborate

! The Building America teams have excellent practical price points for many of the energy components of interest. We would welcome any input from the teams. Specific near term data needs include:

14

! Super high R-values. In particular, the range of high-density cavity options and high-R insulating sheathing. Double wall construction is of interest.

! Solar control options. The cost of overhangs, awnings, etc.

! PV arrays ! Lighting controls

! Non-standard HVAC equipment options ! Combined space/water

heating systems ! Ductless systems ! Heat pump water heaters ! Geothermal source heat

pumps ! Commissioning ! Refrigerant charge testing ! Air system balancing

Invitation to Collaborate

! If you would like to provide cost data for energy components or become a part of the software beta testing team please contact: ! Heather Dillon, [email protected] ! Chrissi Antonopoulos, [email protected]
