The building component catalogue has been in use in many of our building projects and also by external parties, e.g. Københavns Ejendomme1. At the back of the catalogue a Model Progress Specification (MPS) is available. This describes the needed information for each building element at a given time in the project process. The motivation for this catalogue derives from the great challenge in use of BIMs where it often is unclear what information must be provided at a certain milestones. The catalogue has found inspiration in Level of Development (LOD), developed by the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The building component catalogue will be integrated with a Danish, Norwegian, American and English standard as soon as it is available in a condition suitable for the implementation in construction. The purpose is: • To assist project participants in our construction

projects to define the content to be included in a BIM delivery, and to get a clear picture of the contents of a BIM delivery.

• To help design managers and BIM coordinators in MT Højgaard to communicate the information to be includede in a BIM model at a given time.

• To provide a reference for contracts and project’s BIM strategy.

The building component catalogue including a specification for level of information, is targeted for MT Højgaard projects for

internal use and for our partners. However, we would like to make it available to the industry. It may be used by and be an inspiration to the construction industry as long as the source is scknowledged. We welcome comments and suggestions for improvements. The catalogue is continuously updated, while we use. Inquiries regarding this building component catalogue should be addressed to [email protected]. This building component catalogue describes how MT Højgaard defines the geometri (LOD, Level of Development) for the selected building parts and specifies suggestions for properties (LOI, Level of Information) of the individual building components. More properties can be added as needed or building components can be the inspiration for another. LOD is increasing, where LOD100 represents the lowest level and LOD500 represents the highest level. This building component catalogue is a reference book that can be used together with the Model Progress Specification (MPS) in relation to milestones (e.g. preliminary design, detailed design, as built). Firstly described are the properties relevant to calculation, scheduling and energy calculations. This building component catalogue is primarily used in construction, and civil works projects. This catalogue is also published in Danish, Norwegian, German and Icelandic. For each building component on the different levels of development three aspects of a given building component is described: illustration, LOD (geometry) and LOI (properties).

Illustration: Displays the guiding geometry of the object at a given level of information. LOD: Describes the geometry in words. LOI: Describes the properties that an object has at a given LOD level. Properties of a building element at a given LOD level are the described characteristics including the properties from the previous LOD level. This means that the previous properties are included automatically. In general, definitions of systems describe where components are included such as drains on a sewer where the drains level of level is defined at an additional LOD building card.

Basic definition of Information Levels (Level of Development – LOD and LOI)

LOD 100 Corresponding to information level 1 according to Københavns Ejendomme2.

Definition Object (or structure) is graphically represented in the model by symbols (e.g. by a line or surface) or generic (i.e. dimensions and quantities are not defined). This represents the overall geometric expression of the object and the relations to its surroundings. Possible use Overall energy considerations, price calculation on m2 or m3 (e.g. parking house for 300 cars), risk analysis to determine the geometrical design and layout of construction site including site huts, access roads and crane location. Liability Typical architect.

LOD 200 Corresponding to information level 2 according to Københavns Ejendomme.

Definition Object (or structure) is graphically represented as a generic object with approximate quantities, sizes, dimensions, location and orientation. The function of the objects are described. At this point, the model will be divided into a number of discipline models. Possible use Scheduling, safety planning, calculation based on areas (floors, facades, roofs, and functional areas), product preparation, risk analysis, clash detection and energy calculations. Liability Typical architects and consulting engineers.

LOD 300 Corresponding to information level 3 according to Københavns Ejendomme.

Definition Object (or structure) is graphically represented as a specific object representing quantities, sizes, dimensions, locationand orientation. Object’s overall function, performance and material are described. Possible use Production scheduling, calculation based on geometric or function specific objects (m2 terrain slab, m2 facing wall, number of skylights, meter railing), list of parts and clash detection. Liability Typical architects and consulting engineers.

Basic definition of Information Levels (Level of Development - LOD)

LOD 350 Corresponding to information level 4 according to Københavns Ejendomme

Definition Object (or structure) is graphically represented as a supplier-specific object with quantities, sizes, dimensions, location and orientation. Objects are detailed at connections with other building components. “Manufacturer/supplier” concerns information about the suppliers products including, data sheet specifications, color codes, warranty period, intervals for maintenance and inspection, lifespan, etc. Possible use Production scheduling, calculation based on production parts, components and production material (m3 concrete, level of reinforcement, formwork, cast-in items), list of parts, clash detection (coordination of design and system deliveries). Liability Typical architects and consulting engineers.

LOD 400 Corresponding to information level 5 according to Københavns Ejendomme

Definition Object (or structure) is graphically represented, possibly as a supplier-specific object with quantities, sizes, dimensions, location and orientation. Objects are detailed for fabrication, assembly, prefabrication, and contains also installation information. Possible use Prefabrication, list of parts and the specific assembly or installation planning. Liability Typical subcontractor or system supplier for prefabrication.

LOD 500

Definition Object’s (or structure’s) quantities, sizes, dimensions, location and orientation is confirmed on site (as built). Possible use Post-calculation for confirmation, registration of deficiencies and part lists. Liability Typical contractor, but can be by the responsible for discipline model.
