The Long Island GLBT Network is an association

of non-profit organizations serving Long Island’s

GLBT community throughout the lifespan:

Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY),

The Long Island GLBT Community Center (The

Center), and Services and Advocacy for GLBT

Elders – Long Island (SAGE-LI).

In working together, each organization shares

resources, and thus reduces overhead costs

and expenses. Each organization shares

administration, programming space, and

fundraising efforts making for an efficient

system, and ensuring the money raised through

grants, donations, and special events are

maximized providing the greatest benefit to all of

Long Island’s GLBT community.

The organizations of The Long Island GLBT

Network operate Long Island’s only three

community centers in Nassau, Suffolk, and the

East End.

During 2013, The Network and its organizations

celebrated its history and new beginnings. The

Network also served more people with more

programs than ever before.

Together, each organization works to end homophobia and transphobia on Long Island, to provide a home and safe space for the GLBT community, and to advocate for equality.

Looking BackMoving Forward

During 2013, The Network and its organizations

reflected on its history and celebrated new

beginnings. The Network also served more people

with more programs than ever in its history.

Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY) celebrated its 20th

Anniversary of providing life-changing services to hundreds

of thousands of youth since 1993 and its role in transforming

the landscape of Long Island for all GLBT families. At its 20th

Anniversary Gala in May, many national leaders came out to

recognize LIGALY’s long history and also be honored for their

work and leadership; they joined nearly 400 other attendees’

in celebrating LIGALY’s anniversary. Democratic leader and US

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi was recognized for her decades

of leadership for GLBT equality and justice; Edie Windsor was

honored for her brave fight in the US Supreme Court which

led to the demise of The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)

and Andy Stern, former LIGALY Board President and COO of

NARAL Pro-Choice NY, was lauded for his decades of work

fighting for HIV and GLBT equality and justice.

262 workshops to more than 7,672 students

in Long Island schools that reduce bullying

against GLBT youth and prevent suicide.

LIGALY has also expanded efforts to help

schools meet the new requirements of the

The Network Launches 18-month Program to Aide Enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace

With an 18-month grant from the New York

State Health Foundation, The Network was one

of the organizations in New York State selected to

educate, screen, and enroll people in the Health

Marketplace under the Affordable Care Act. The

Network launched Project Helm in the fall and has

served more than 350 people in just a few months.

IGNITING ACTIVISM The annual Long Island GLBT

Conference at Stony Brook University brought together

more than 400 youth, teachers, counselors, and other

community members to gain skills and knowledge about

creating change in their own schools and communities

so that more people are trained as agents and catalysts of

change to create safer spaces for GLBT people.

BUILDING BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS

The Network’s Partners in Pride program

continues to build relationships and

partnerships with a variety of corporations

and businesses through its annual Long

Island GLBT Business Directory and annual

Long Island GLBT Expo. The Network and

its organizations – LIGALY, The Center,

and SAGE-LI – are now also participants

in the Better Business Bureau’s (BBB)

Charity Review Program by meeting all

of the BBB’s 20 Standards for Charity

Accountability. The Network is also an

Accredited Charity Seal Holder of the

BBB. As a result of these efforts, the GLBT

community remains a priority among

business leaders and institutions.

EXPANDING IMPACT

LIGALY’s Aleph Project for GLBT

Jewish youth has helped start and

maintain the first gay-straight

alliance (GSA) club in a Long

Island Jewish Day School.

UNITING GLBT CULTURE

The Network celebrated the one-

year anniversary of its magazine-

style newspaper, Living Out,

written by and for Long Island’s

GLBT community, family, friends,

advocates and supporters in order

to help build GLBT culture and

Long Island life.

ADVOCACY AND OUTREACH

LIGALY’s Long Island Gay Parent

Teacher Student Association (LI

Gay PTSA) – the first of its kind

in the nation continued its efforts

to create safe schools for GLBT

youth by engaging over 527

parents, teachers, and youth.

FIGHTING HIV LIGALY

and The Center continue to

significantly expand its HIV

Prevention Services each

year, and in 2013 conducted

more than 400 HIV tests and

627 STD tests so that more

gay and bisexual men are

aware of their status.

PROVIDING SUPPORT

The Center’s CARE Services

(Counseling, Advocacy,

Resources, and Education)

provided counseling, groups,

information, referral, and

crisis intervention to more

than 200 GLBT people in

need – particularly the

transgender community and

GLBT victims of domestic

violence, hate and bias

crimes, sexual assault, and

other violence.

AGING PROUDLY

SAGE-LI continues to serve

GLBT older adults with

weekly programs and special

events that build community,

reduce isolation, and help

keep active – it is a lifeline

of support, particularly for

GLBT older adults who have

been rejected from their

families and live alone.

BUILDING COMMUNITY The Network continues

to expand its many programs and services including

a huge growth in its support services for transgender

and gender non-conforming people of all ages. The

Long Island Trans Experience (LITE) program, providing

support for transgender people, increased meetings from

once a month to once a week.

MORE VISIBILITY IN SCHOOLS

LIGALY’s annual “National Coming Out

Day School Awareness Campaign” was

implemented in 67 Long Island schools and

religious institutions engaging more than

64,000 students, teachers, parents, and

other community members to take a stand

against the bullying of GLBT youth.
