HBA members came out in full force for the 2010 Annual HBA Golf Tournament on Friday, June 9th at the Falcon Ridge Golf Club in Lenexa, KS. Renewed interest in the tournament was gratifying for everyone involved with 144 golfers and a portion of the proceeds benefiting two important charities. The Salvation Army and Hillcrest Transitional Housing were presented with checks from Home Builders Association Foundation Fund to support their important work.

The day started with a continental breakfast and registration where golfers could purchase mulligans and skirts to raise extra money for the charities on hand. A putting contest sponsored by The Kansas City Star where the winner brought home a new putter.

To spice up this year’s event, co-chairs Tommy Angotti (Factory Direct Appliance) and Deb Swearingen (Pinnacle Bank) offered games throughout the day to keep golfers entertained. The longest drive, longest putt, and everyone’s favorite hole, where golfers could opt to put on a skirt and tee off from the women’s tee box. Finishing the day was a lunch and awards ceremony where checks were presented to the charities and tournament winners.

Build GreenCertified Green Professional (CGP) Classes OfferedOct 25, 26 & 27 at the HBA

NAHB’s Certified Green Professional™ designation recognizes builders, remodelers and other industry professionals who incorporate green building principles into their homes. Class work leading to the designation provides a solid background in business management and green building methods, as well as the tools to reach consumers. The HBA is offering the two classes that lead to the CGP designation.

Class 1 - Business Management for Building Professionals

Learn the management skills that give industry leaders the edge, October 25, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the HBA. This course provides a solid foundation in best business practices that are so valuable to smaller businesses: planning, organizing, staffing/directing and controlling. By using case studies and sample forms, instructors teach practical and applicable tools for management success. Cost is $200 for members, $250 for non-members.

Class 2 - Green Building for Building Professionals

Learn how green homes provide buyers with lower energy costs and higher value. This 2-day course for building professionals discusses strategies for incorporating green-building principles into homes without driving up the cost of construction. October 26 & 27, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Participants will learn how green homes provide buyers lower maintenance, better indoor air quality and better long-term value. Techniques are also discussed for competitively differentiating home products with increased indoor environmental quality as well as energy and resource efficiency. Cost is $350 for members, $425 for non-members.

Construction companies must be compliant with the Occupational safety and Health Administration’s new “Compliance Guidance for Residential Construction” directive (STD 03-11-002) on fall protection. Builders must take whatever steps are needed to be in compliance with OSHA’s Subpart M-Fall Protection as the 90-day phase in period has concluded.

“These new guidelines are the law of the land and builders must remain committed to jobsite safety,” said HBA executive Vice President sara Corless. “NAHB has made numerous resources

available online and members should take advantage of this information and work with HBA members to ensure compliant measures are in place.”

Builders are encouraged to:

• Visit www.nahb.org/fallprotection to learn more about the fall protection guidelines.

• Contact NAHB BuilderBooks at 800-223-2665 to buy the Jobsite Safety Video, the first ever job site safety video for home builders, focusing on how to reduce accidents and injuries.

• Work with an HBA member. Progressive environmental & safety, presented fall protection training to HBA members in June.

Additionally, OsHA has a Residential Fall Protection website at www.osha.gov/doc/residential_fall_protection.html.

Numerous reports indicate OsHA inspectors have visited the metropolitan region.

employers are being required to provide conventional fall protection systems — guardrails, personal fall arrest systems or safety nets — when workers are exposed

to falls six feet or more above a lower level. There is an exception if an employer determines that using conventional fall protection is either infeasible or creates a greater hazard. In that case, the employer can implement alternative fall protection practices and must provide a written fall protection plan.

Builders who work in states with an approved occupational safety and health plan should contact their local administrator or home builders association for further information on the standards that apply.
