Building and Editing Rubrics ActivProgress allows you to build and use rubrics within the system so you can view student responses and score them all in one location... no more shuffling papers around to compare rubrics to student responses. ActivProgress also allows users to share rubrics within the system, so you and your colleagues can create a library of them for future use or adjustment. This guide will cover: Creating a new rubric or editing an existing rubric; Developing and weighing rules for the rubric; Aligning the rubric's rules to standards; and Associating the rubric with an existing open response-type question. When an assessment includes an open-response type question, you can create a rubric to score the question within ActivProgress. You will then be able to see the scoring rubric and the student responses within the platform. Building and Editing Rubrics

ActivProgress allows you to build and use rubrics within the system so you can viewstudent responses and score them all in one location... no more shuffling papersaround to compare rubrics to student responses.

ActivProgress also allows users to share rubrics within the system, so you and yourcolleagues can create a library of them for future use or adjustment.

This guide will cover:

• Creating a new rubric or editing an existing rubric;• Developing and weighing rules for the rubric;• Aligning the rubric's rules to standards; and• Associating the rubric with an existing open response-type question.

When an assessment includes an open-response type question, you can create arubric to score the question within ActivProgress. You will then be able to see thescoring rubric and the student responses within the platform.

Creating or Editing a Rubric

To create a new rubric, or locate and edit an existing one, go to the Create tab andclick on Rubrics in the left column.

To access an existing rubric, click on the gray downward pointing arrow.

Or, to start a new rubric, click on the Add Rubric button.

Now enter a name for your rubric.

Use your organization's naming conventions so other team memberswill know what course, test and item the rubric relates to.

In the Description area, enter information about your rubric that will help you orsomeone else understand how your rubric can be used.

Now click on the Add New Rule button.

In the Name field, write the name of the rule. In the Description field, write in thedescription of the rule. (Skip the "Group" pulldown option for now). The descriptionincludes the rules for what constitutes point values are

In the Standard row, click on the Choose button to search for standard(s) to alignyour rule to.

Use the Filter Contexts menu to find standards. Align the rule to a standard in thesame manner as the item authoring process. Refer to the Standards Library guide formore details.

Enter in the weight of this rule in the rubric. This must be a decimal value.

The weight field allows you to put more value on some rules. For example, ifgrammar is more important in a test than spelling, you can use the Weightfield to give grammar a higher percent value than spelling. ActivProgress willautomatically calculate the scores using the weights you assign.

Then enter the minimum and maximum point values of the rule.

Click the Save button.

Repeat by clicking on Add New Rule button to complete your rubric.

You can share your rubric with your friends by clicking the Share button andselecting individuals from your list of Friends. (Friends guide link here...)

Click on the Preview button at the top of the screen when you are finished.

Associating a Rubric with a Question

Now that you have created a rubric, you can associate it with an existing openresponse test question.

Remember that your question must be in the open response format.

To find the open-response type question to associate with your rubric, go to theCreate tab and click on Item Banks.

You'll see a list of item banks. Use the search features to find the item bank you arelooking for. Remember you can use the Mine button to narrow your search to onlythose item banks you have created.

Click the arrow next to the bank that contains the item you want to apply the rubricto. Then click Edit.

Then go to step 2 - Items - in the Wizard.

You'll see all the items in this bank. Select the question you would like to associatewith your rubric by clicking on the pencil.

Now go to the answers area in the help wizard. This is where you'll select your rubric.

Now, you're ready to associate the rubric you created with this question.

Select a rubric by clicking on it.

Then click Next.

On the next screen, you'll be able to preview your question.

When you are through, click Finish.

Now when you go to the proctoring page to score student work, you'll see the rubricsin the hand entry area.
