Abstract / Disclaimer
• This is not meant to be a comprehensiveguide to all the technical details of buildinga website.
• This will give the audience some basicknowledge of things they should belooking for in their website.
• The presenter is not an expert at webdesign.
Domain Name
• Choose something easy to remember
• May want to consider multiple domainnames (common misspellings, etc.)
• Domain names are not case-sensitive.
– prolifetechnology.org
– PROLIFEtechnology.org
– ProLifeTechnology.org
• These are all the same
• Can check availability at www.whois.com
Webhosting Provider
• Domain name must be registered.
• This can usually be done with the sameservice that hosts the website.
• There are many low-cost providers.
– Expect to pay $100-120 per year
– Some have some special discounts for thefirst year.

• First released in 2005
• Open Source Content Management System
– Open Source - Free
– Content Management System - CMS
– Can be edited by numerous people
• Many other modules to work with Joomla –some free, some cost money.
• Easy to add content – can be done directly fromthe website

• Spend some time deciding what contentyou want on your website
– Organization’s address, phone number, hoursof operation, etc.
– Upcoming events
– Different services of your organization
– Newsletter

• Decide how you would want to organizethat information
– It helps to develop a nested outline of plannedcontents to develop menu items and linkedlayers.
– Remember that the user may not be familiarwith your organization and you want him orher to be able to find the information quickly.

• Search internet for Joomla! template
• Find one that matches the image you wantfor you organization.
– Look at colors, layout and style.
– Pictures can be customized.

• Most content will be contained in articles.
– Articles are organized in Sections andCategories.
• Articles can be created and modified fromthe front-end or the back-end.
Forms
• Forms are a way for people to submitinformation to your organization throughyour website.
• Free plug-in called ChronoForms can bedownloaded fromhttp://extensions.joomla.org
Maps
• Google Maps plug-in
Video
• Video can be added to your site or bylinking to a video on another site.
• Video can be created by copying from aDVD or creating/editing video

– Will need to be saved in a format that can beembedded into a webpage.
