Dear Children:

What do you think of your hometown Seoul?

Seoul is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

There is no other large city in the world like Seoul, with its

beautiful nature such as the Han River and Namsan (Mt.).

However, wil l Seoul stil l be considered a beautiful city when

you grow up?

Unfortunately, due to global pollution, green mountains and

rivers are disappearing and the Earth temperature is rising. This

is melting the ice in the Arctic and the polar bears are losing their

homes.

Also many children are suffering from environmental diseases such

as atopic dermatitis and rhinitis.

From now on, we must try our best to protect and love the envi-

ronment for not only the polar bears but also for all of us so we can

continue our healthy and happy lives in Seoul.

“Building a Green Seoul with Hwan and Gyeong” is a textbook that

will teach you the importance of the environment and how you can

protect it.

We hope that this book will help you learn about the importance of

the environment and how to protect it at any time and any place.

Let’s summarize key points from the article.

Whose footprints? Carbon footprints!

Tuvalu, an island located in the Pacic Ocean, is on the verge of sinking under the

sea. The island is lled with water for fteen days every month, which leaves less

space for people to live in. The Chacaltaya glacier in Bolivia used to be the world’s

highest ski run but now it has been reduced to just a few pieces of ice. Why are

these things happening?

Greenhouse gas emission has increased due

to the use of fossil fuels such as coal and oil.

A huge amount of greenhouse gases have

also been emitted in the process of waste

decomposition. In addition, disap pearing

forests have reduced nature’s ability to

absorb greenhouse gases. All these arecausing global warming.

Global warming describes the rise of the average temperature of the Earth, and

is caused by the heat from the Earth which is trapped due to increasing green-

house gases in the air. It is the main reason for  the ooding of Tuvalu and

melting of the Chacaltaya glacier.

So what does global warming and climate change have to do with a carbonfootprint?

A carbon footprint is the gure which shows the total amount of emitted

greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, caused by humankind in kilogram

(kg) or in number of trees.

We can reduce our carbon footprint if we unplug the home appliances not in

use and cut the use of disposable products such as paper cups and wooden

chopsticks.

Besides these efforts, what else can we do to reduce our carbon footprint?

disposal are increasing while the

forests are disappearing.

We need to make an effort to

The Power of New & Renewable Energy!

The world currently has reserves for only 40 years of oil, 65 years of gas and 155

years of coal, so many countries are trying to develop new & renewable energy.

1. The f ollowing is the description of different types of energy.

Write down the right type of energy from the box below for eachdescription.

Fossil Fuel, New Energy, Renewable Energy

Humans have been using a lot of

this energy. Along with petroleum

and coal, natural gas is also a source

of this energy.

This energy converts existing fos-

sil fuels for use. In addition to the

fuel cells, hydrogen energy and

coal liquefaction are also used for

this energy.

This energy uses renewable sources

such as sunlight and water. It uses

not only solar light and wind but

also solar heat, water, tide, waste,

geothermal and biomass.

Smart Consumption! Green Consumption!

Green Consumption means environmentally friendly consumption which does not

affect the environment.

Buying eco-friendly products, forming a habit of saving, and minimizing environment

polluting wastes are all activities for green consumption.

1. Look at the following pictures.Try to nd the differences between the pictures and circle them.

2 Buying only essential products.

3Using private cars rather than public transportation

or bicycles.

5 Buying cute products even if they are unnecessary.

4Buying eco-friendly products certied with

environment mark.

6 Implement four “Rs”: reduce, reuse recycle, and rebuy.

The environment mark indicates environmentally-

friendly products which save energy or cause less pol-

lution during the process of production, consumption

and disposal. The label shows why the product ob-

tained an environment mark.

Reading-3, Collecting your thoughts 60~63

Let’s read the passage and compare it with your own ideas.

A Promise to protect the Earth

April 22 each year is Earth Day. When and why was the Earth Day founded? As

citizens of the Earth, what kind of promises can we make for the Earth?

In 1969, an oil spill occurred off the

beautiful coast of Santa Barbara,

California, U.S. and caused terrible

environmental pollution around the

area.

After this incident, a United States

Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed

founding of Earth Day to raise public awareness of the environment.

The rst Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970 with a Harvard graduate student, Denis Hayes.

In the 1980s, other countries started to join and celebrate Earth Day. In

1990, over 200 million people in 140 nations participated in the Earth

Day event and in 2002, 5,000 environmental groups in 184 countries

around the world were on board.

Earth Day is now a global event, alerting people of environmental prob-

lems such as environmental pollution and the destruction of the ecosys-tem.

A variety of environmental events are held on Earth Day including a

tree-planting program, a river cleaning project, Earth Expo and cultural

events.

We cannot live a single day without the Earth. We have to think and act

as if every day is Earth Day, not just one day in April.

Zero Waste Project

Zero Waste is the best way to solve waste disposal issues.

Together with Seoul citizens, the Seoul Metropolitan Government is promoting

Zero Waste activities, which aim to reduce, reuse and recycle waste.

a. As of 2008, Seoul citizens disposal 11,569 ton of waste including

3,416 ton of food waste a day.

b. Only 7,445 tons, approximately 17% of the waste, is recycled and the

rest is burial or incineration. As the rate of recycling has increased over that of the past, the

usable life of landlls in the metropolitan area has been extended to

2044. However, there is no other method of disposal planned for

the following years.

c. Gyeong, why don’t we start a zero waste project?

Recycling is important. But if we save materials and reduce waste,

we are achieve zero waste someday, can’t we?

Together, let’s create a clean Seoul through the Zero Waste Project.

What is Slow Food?

Slow Food is a movement which began to preserve traditional foods and food

cultures and to encourage the use of local food products. When, where and how

did the Slow Food movement begin?

The Slow Food movement began

in 1986 to preserve traditional

Italian food culture when a fast

food restaurant was opened near

the Spanish Steps in Rome, Italy.

The movement has since expanded

globally and has over 80,000 mem-bers in more than 100 countries. A slow snail is the symbol of this

movement.

The phrase “Slow Food” is a combination of words “Slow” and

“Food” which refers to highly-nutritious, healthy, unprocessed foods

including a variety of different recipes. Slow Food uses less meat and

focuses on traditional, local ingredients, thus producing less carbon

dioxide.

So, what kind of food is slow food, and how does it  benefit both

the Earth environment and our health?

Kimchi chigae (spicy kimchi stew), Doenjang chigae (soybean paste

stew) and Bibimbap are some of the representative slow foods in

Korea.

Dobongsan

Dobongsan is a mountain in Bukhansan National Park, located on the northernpart of Seoul.

Dobongsan is well-known for its high peaks and clean valleys.

There are several beautiful rocky peaks in Dobongsan including Jawoonbong,

the summit of the mountain. Clean water ows through the valleys in between

the peaks and the place is home to many living species such as minnows which

can be found only in clean water.

Over the past century, the average temperature of the world rose by 0.7°C but the

temperature of Korea went up by 1.7°C. In particular, the temperature rise in Seoul

was twice faster than the average temperature rise of Korea and three times faster

than that of the world. It is anticipated that if global warming continues in this rate,

there will be no winter in Korea by 2100.

Social Studies -2-(1) Natural resources and production in my city

Let’s nd out about my city’s natural resources.

We have a mine in Seoul!

The Seoul Metropolitan Government is working on an urban mining project by collecting

raw materials from discarded electronic devices. The urban mining project is being

considered as a good solution for resolving the problem of a lack of resources.

Urban mining collects precious metals such as gold, silver and bronze from

discarded cell phones, computers and other electronic devices from homesand businesses. These thrown away items are waste when they are sent to the

landll, but they can turn into a resource if you recycle them.

Social Studies-2-(1) Natural resources and production in my city 56-57

Let’s learn how companies in my city work with other countries.

The lower food miles, the better!

Food miles is a term which indicates the distance that food travels from the

production until it reaches the consumer and it shows the degree of environmental

burden.

If food travels longer, more energy is required and more greenhouse gas is

produced.

Japan(Pollack – 1221 t.km)China

(Onions - 912 t.km)

The Philippines(Bananas -2613 t.km)

Indonesia(Blue Crab - 5275 t.km)

New Zealand(Kiwi - 9651 t.km)

The unit of t.km is calculated by multiplying the amount of

food (ton) by the length of travelling distances (km) from itsproduction to the consumer.

Social Studies-3- Environmental issues and solutions of my city

Let’s learn about the challenges that my city is facing and discuss the solution.

What is Eco-Mileage?

Eco-Mileage is a program to encourage people to voluntarily reduce the amount

of electricity, water, gas, and other energy they use at home, school and work. The

aim of the program is to involve citizens to actively participate in the efforts to

resolve the challenges caused by climate change. The Seoul Metropolitan Government

gives incentives to the citizens and organizations who have earned Eco-miles to

encourage the citizens to join the effort to protect the Earth.

1. The following list shows how to save energy and earn Eco-miles at

home. Draw a circle if you can do it by yourself and a triangle if your

family can do it together.

How to earn eco-mile

Buy high energy efcient electronic devices.

Unplug electronic devices not in use.

Select the appropriate size of refrigerator for your

family.

Do not press the close button. Wait until the elevator

doors close automatically.

Maintain the indoor temperature between 26 and28 °C in summer.

Only watch necessary TV programs.

Who can

do it?

Social Studies-3-(2) Environmental issues and solutions of my city

Let’s learn about the issues that my city and other cities have to work together.

Let’s solve the problem together!

Many environmental problems may occur in your city. Then, how can

we solve these problems within our city, and work together with other cities?

Citizen monitors investigate this facility to see whether it is receiving

waste properly.

1. The Nowon district in the city of Seoul built a Resource Recovery

Facility to take care of the waste generated in the city to prevent

environmental pollution. Read the following article and write oneof the efforts they are making.

The Resource Recovery Facility is a

plant which incinerates the trash in a

hygienic way and recycles energy by

collecting the heat generated from the

incineration of trash. The Nowon Resource Recovery Facility

founded in 1997, was transformed into a shape which looks like a magic

box in 2009 (picture above) and the plant improved its facilities to reduce

pollutants generated from incineration.

Citizen monitors work independently to investigate the facility to en-

sure that the trash enters the facility properly, the facility is being oper-

ated in a right way, and that it is not polluting the nearby area. In ad-dition, the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the district of Nowon

also study how the facility affects the citizens and the neighboring area.

2. Some local environmental problems can be resolved by working with

other areas. Underline how the problem is being solved.

Han River

Anyangcheon(stream)

In 1999, two districts in the city of

Seoul, Gurogu and Yangcheongu,

established the ‘Council for Improv-

ing Water Quality of Anyangcheon’

together with 13 local governments

around Anyangcheon area including

Anyang-si, Gunpo-si, Uiwang-si and

Gwangmyeong-si at the GyeonggiProvince, and launched a project for

cooperation between local govern-

ments to rehabilitate Anyangcheon.

They established a water recycling

center and made an effort to recover the ecosystem of the upper part of

the Anyangcheon. These efforts paid off and the water quality of Any-

angcheon, which used to be one of the most polluted streams in Korea

until the mid 1990s, has improved signicantly in mid 2000s.As the water quality got better, the sh which left the stream came back

and it is now observed that minnows spawn in the stream. The stream

has changed into a habitat for migrating birds, particularly white her-

ons, gray herons and egrets in summer and mallards, white wagtails,

snipes and plovers in winter.

Anyangcheon is now home to various kinds of sh species such as Chi-

nese minnows, which live only in the cleanest water, and wild birds

such as spot bills.

Environment story of the Seoul Metropolitan Government

Gwanghwamun

Gwanghwamun, built in the Joseon Dynasty, is the main gate of Gyeongbok

Palace. Gwanghwamun was named during the reign of King Sejong and it

means that it is ‘a gate to broadly show national authority and culture’.

During the Japanese Invasion, Gwanghwamun was destroyed by re together

with Gyeongbok Palace and it was reconstructed in 1865. After that, the gate’s

structure and location changed several times throughout the Japanese colonial

period and the Korean War. Recently, efforts from the civic society helped the

gate to be restored to its original structure and location.
