Introduction to the American Business Council of Pakistan (ABC)

0201

Mission Statement of the ABC: ''to protect and promote the interests of US Investors in Pakistan; to encourage and stimulate new investments; to introduce and inculcate best practices; to strive to establish a level

playing field in the country in order to promote the development of commerce between the USA and Pakistan''

The ABC was formed in 1984 – it is a chamber of U.S. businesses and one of the largest groups of single country overseas investors in

Pakistan. ABC has completed 27 years of service in Pakistan. We have over 60 members who operate in all sectors of the economy – most of

whom are Fortune 500 companies.

The Council is managed by an Executive Committee that is elected every year by its members and meets monthly to review various

aspects of its ongoing initiatives. Depending on the economic cycle, the initiatives may vary from year to year. Sub-Committees, which meet

regularly, are formed to ensure that adequate focus is given to important issues affecting the majority of Council membership.

ABC members have cumulative revenues of over US$ 3.7 billion and an investment of around US$ 663 million. Its members contribute a sizable amount to the national exchequer every year - as direct and

indirect taxes – in 2011 they contributed Rs. 61.4 billion. The same year they also exported goods worth Rs. 24 billion. ABC members directly employ over 63,500 people, with 250,000 dependents, and indirectly

employ approximately 1 million people through their networks of agents, distributors and contractors etc.

The ABC is an effective channel for dialogue with the Government of Pakistan. Regular suggestions and input for improvement are provided to the relevant bodies like the Government Ministries, Regulatory and

Tax authorities, the Board of Investment, Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan, etc., throughout the year. The focus of the

It gives me immense pleasure to share with you American Business Council’s first comprehensive corporate social responsibility publication. The key objective of this comprehensive study, published in a high quality report, is to highlight and honor the great work US companies based in Pakistan are doing to positively impact citizens living at the bottom of the pyramid. In addition to running successful businesses, our members are driven by a desire to aid, improve and transform the social sector. Their activities cover a wide range of sectors including education, health, rural development, environment, sanitation, to even adopting and rehabilitating entire villages impacted by floods.

US corporation-led CSR programs act as role models for others to emulate and support. Using their global experiences, they continue to introduce new best practices, as well as improvise in areas of sustainability and scaling.

I would like to specially thank United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for financing the publication of this souvenir book, as well as all ABC member companies whose active participation has helped make this a memorable edition.

Regards,

Saad Amanullah KhanPresident American Business Council

n Executive Committee is to ensure that the ABC’s suggestions are incorporated in the annual Federal Budget and Trade Policy.

The Council facilitates stakeholder engagement through a number of CEO Roundtable meetings, guest speakers’

programs, seminars and events, including its signature annual ‘ABC Economic Summit’ - all of which are aimed at sustaining

an ongoing dialogue between its membership and senior business leaders, economic strategists, government dignitaries,

and the media.

The ABC also interacts closely with the US Embassy, Consulates and their staff. It functions as a conduit to providing insight into the corporate sector in Pakistan, advising US stakeholders on

business challenges and success stories, along with establishing avenues of working together in mutually beneficial ways.

The ABC is affiliated with the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) and is a member of the U.S.

Chamber of Commerce (USCC), Washington D.C., and Asia-Pacific Council of American Chambers of Commerce (APCAC). ABC is also an affiliate member of the U.S. - Pakistan Business Council,

Washington, which is a component of the USCC.

USAID is pleased to support this report that the American Business Council has put together on the corporate social responsibility activities of American companies in Pakistan. American companies are a key contributor to Pakistan’s economy; member companies of the American Business Council have an approximate cumulative investment of US$ 663 million in Pakistan and contribute Rs. 61.4 billion to the country’s tax revenue.

Over the past five decades, American companies have established a strong presence in Pakistan, reflecting their commitment to this country and their confidence in its economy. These companies support thousands of small and medium enterprises associated with them, and provide thousands of jobs for Pakistanis.

This report highlights the social contributions of American companies in Pakistan. By contributing a share of their profits for local development, these companies have been engaging with non-governmental organizations across the country to impart health services, education, and skill development to rural and disenfranchised communities. These initiatives complement the U.S. Government’s civilian development assistance programs that USAID implements along with other U.S. government agencies in Pakistan.

The American Business Council and American companies are key partners with USAID in delivering development assistance. We look forward to continuing this cooperation that is helping to build a stronger, more prosperous Pakistan, a Pakistan that is at peace, trading with its neighbors, and is full of opportunities for its men and women.

R According to CSR Pakistan, a pioneering organization dedicated to raising awareness, creating research and knowledge about CSR & Sustainable Development in Pakistan:

“Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been defined as many things lately. Simply put, it is the commitment of a business or company to continuously upgrade its processes, systems, products and services by behaving responsibly and creating value for local communities they operate in, and by enabling its employees, existing and potential customers to improve their standards of living.”

CSR has a direct, constructive impact on both local communities and business stakeholders as it creates a positive environment through infrastructure and socio-economic development. This is especially true in developing countries such as Pakistan, where the results can be tangible and of great magnitude.

Allan Hammond of the World Resources Institute says, “I don’t know of any developing country government that can deliver services in a million places at once every day. If we want to solve some of these social problems, one of the best ways we could do it is to hire the right global companies.”

Besides creating initiatives and projects aimed at giving back to society directly, CSR encourages businesses to conduct themselves ethically and transparently, heeding laws of corporate governance, fair business practices, labor laws, and environmentally safe methods.

The Responsible Business Initiative defines the ‘CSR Pillars’ as:1. Corporate Governance2. Business Ethical Principles3. Environmental Compliance4. Social Compliance5. Disclosure & Reporting6. Product Integrity7. Giving & Community Investment8. Stakeholder Involvement9. Financial Performance10. Supply Chain Security

According to a study conducted by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), the evolution from CSR theory to CSR practice can be broken down into several phases:1. Pressure building up against the businesses2. Wave of awareness by the society and the stakeholders3. Realization of the responsibility by the businesses4. Development of policies and identification of best practices5. Implementation of the policies6. Development of several programs to implement CSR Performance and

Compliance Evaluation

It is also essential to note the real impact CSR can have on a business in terms of reputation and profitability. CSR is an effective tool to win the hearts and minds of all stakeholders and can give a competitive edge to companies following a principled approach of giving back to the community.

“We know that the profitable growth of our company depends on the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of our communities across the world. And we know it is in our best interests to contribute to the sustainability of those communities” – Travis Engen, CEO, Alcan

the army’s efforts to effectively distribute flood relief aid across the country via ‘Family Packs’ of basic supplies for flood victims. A number of our members agreed the army had the reach to ensure these packs were distributed in areas where they were most needed and had already proven to be an effective and transparent channel for flood relief aid. Each pack cost around Rs. 2,000 to assemble and sustained a family of 4/5 for a fortnight. The collective ABC contribution to the Army was over Rs. 6 million, which amounted to over 3000 Family Packs. Additionally, members also donated to the arm appeal in kind by providing 150 Ration Bags and 50 Cartons of disposable face masks. ABC member companies also responded to an appeal from one of their own members - Wackenhut Pakistan (Pvt.) Ltd. While many companies had employees that had been affected by the floods, Wackenhut had 1,200 direct employees who lost their homes. They had already implemented an immediate plan to provide aid to employees but the sheer scale of numbers required additional help. Our member companies contributed Rs. 750,000 to help Wackenhut in their hour of need. The security guards working at the ABC Secretariat had lost their homes to the flooding in upper Sindh. ABC provided them with a further Rs. 20,000 in the form of clothing, blankets and food rations.

The ABC has been providing support to the Citizen’s Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) since 2002. The CPLC is a non-political statutory institution, operationally independent and managed by dedicated and concerned citizens offering their honorary services. It has contributed significantly towards improvement in law enforcement and the security environment. Most of the CPLC’s operations rely on the patronage and contributions from concerned citizens and organizations and consequently the ABC has provided Rs.1.8 million over the years to this worthy cause. In 2011, the ABC launched an initiative for its members to meet and understand the work of philanthropic organizations in Pakistan. The CSR Sub-Committee selected a few worthy, credible causes and introduced them to the ABC by inviting them to do short presentations and Q&A sessions over tea. Instigating a relationship and providing support for the future were left to individual company’s own prerogatives; the ABC simply encouraged its members to continue being good corporate citizens and attend to hear about some of the achievements and wonderful work done by these institutions. Amongst the organizations invited to present were The Kidney Centre, Make-A-Wish Foundation, The Family Education Services Foundation, UNICEF and Teach for Pakistan. This series of presentations has been very well attended by the ABC membership and a much appreciated endeavor that will continue in the future.

“Business has a responsibility beyond its basic responsibility to its shareholders; a responsibility to a broader constituency that includes its key stakeholders: customers, employees, NGOs, government – the people of the communities in which it operates.” – Courtney Pratt, Former CEO Toronto Hydro.

The member companies of the American Business Council (ABC) are committed to operating as responsible corporate citizens in every aspect of their businesses, in order to have a positive and lasting impact on their operated environments.

The ABC has a CSR Sub-Committee, which allows our members to collectively focus on CSR activities, share experiences and learn from best practices. The goals of the Sub-Committee are as follows:1. Creating partnerships with suitable philanthropic organizations that

positively impact the ABC and the perception of US companies operating in Pakistan, with a clear established method of achieving these goals.

2. Identifying areas of need for both long term partnerships and during emergency relief efforts.

3. Facilitation meetings between the ABC membership and deserving philanthropic organizations to encourage greater interaction, awareness and support.

4. Regularly communicating and highlighting CSR achievements of the ABC and its member companies.

5. Reflect the philosophy of our members and their commitment to being good corporate citizens.

While every member company has its own individual CSR program and areas of focus, the ABC creates a platform for the companies to share their visions and unite under a collective effort when the need arises.

Foremost among the efforts undertaken collectively under the ABC banner has been the Bolton Market Emergency Response Program. In the Bolton Market incident on December 28, 2009, shops were set ablaze in vandalism in reaction to a suicide attack on the major Ashura mourning procession in Karachi. Since Bolton Market is the biggest wholesale market in Pakistan, the incident resulted in a shortage of commodities and negatively impacted the already struggling economy of the country. Most of the businesses were either uninsured or had very little insurance coverage and affected traders in dire need of financial assistance for the reconstruction of the market and to resume their businesses. To address this need, at the request of the ABC, USAID provided Rs. 1 billion (US$ 12 million) for the distressed traders. The amount was disbursed by ABC to verified claimants through the Bolton Market Emergency Response Program. Over 2,500 applications were verified by ABC through its member company Wackenhut/G4S. Close to 1,500 successful claimants benefitted from this program. As an incentive, those with a National Tax Number (NTN) received Rs. 600,000 each, while those who were not registered tax payers were entitled to Rs. 400,000. This project had a two-fold positive impact - along with providing relief to the traders, it also created goodwill for USAID and the efforts of US companies in Pakistan.

In the wake of the devastating floods in Pakistan in 2011, ABC member companies provided generous support individually – through their CSR budgets, donations from abroad and employee contributions. They also rallied together under the ABC banner to provide additional relief through supporting

n According to CSR Pakistan: “Pakistan offers a wide range of tangible opportunities for responsible businesses seeking to make a difference in the lives of ordinary people through CSR initiatives and programs. The unequal distribution of wealth and lack of employment opportunities in and outside major urban centers are taking their toll and choking the growth of Pakistani cities. This is increasing pressure on the health care, education and sanitation facilities in the big cities, creating pollution and seriously challenging the sustainability of resources. Pakistan is the world’s sixth most populous country and more than 70 percent of its 180 million people live in the rural areas. Development of infrastructure and community improvement programs in small towns and villages could reduce migration to big cities as well as bridge the widening gap between standards of living of the urban and the rural populations.”

Charity and philanthropy have long been in practice in Pakistan - according to a Survey conducted by Triple Bottom Line, ‘corporate philanthropy’ is the top priority for CSR spending among all CSR initiatives in Pakistan. This is in line with the traditional Pakistani culture rooted in concepts of Zakat, Sadqa and Khairaat (obligations for charity in Islam).

However, only recently companies have understood the concept of CSR as a strategic, integrated part of business. US companies have been among the leaders in this transition, and most ABC members developed their CSR programs keeping in mind the Sullivan Principles and are signatories to the UN Global Compact.

With increasing awareness and learning from best practices, CSR has been growing rapidly in Pakistan in active and innovative ways. While examples and methodology of CSR exist in developed countries, businesses in Pakistan are recognizing that a successful CSR program requires both sound business ideas

as well as a study of what is most needed in their operating environment in order to have the greatest impact.

Studies of CSR in Pakistan indicate the preferred areas of funding focus largely on environment conservation and education, followed by general health care. Women empowerment and rural development are also given attention. The significance of these areas is indicative of where the government has not managed to solve problems or created a deep impact.

While CSR is developing in Pakistan, companies often face the challenge of identifying an experienced, reliable, credible and professional partner to work with. US companies in Pakistan are very particular about the organizations they work with in this area – ensuring all their partners are carefully vetted and only create a relationship with audited, reputable organizations.

CSR Pakistan states: “Good practice of CSR in Pakistan could more than double its exports to major international markets, as well as see the development of joint ventures and strategic partnerships for the transfer of expertise and technology between international and Pakistani companies and businesses. The opportunities are immense, but the pace of their realization is contingent on peace, security and political stability in Pakistan and its surrounding areas.”

Captain-PQ Chemical Industries is a leading producer of industrial chemicals in Pakistan. Founded in 1951,

the company has several manufacturing facilities serving local and global customers.

As part of the organization's CSR initiatives, Captain Industries Chairman, Mr. Farrokh Captain, supported the formation of The i-Care Foundation (iCF), a not-for-profit philanthropic trust. organizations with common goals to multiply their work output.

To date, the iCF has supported and partnered with 43 Pakistani non-profit organizations - donating in excess of Rs. 400 million, improving 600,000 lives. iCF’s CSR initiatives have focused on health, education, entrepreneurship and disaster relief.

Sheraton Karachi Hotel is part of the Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., a leading hotel and leisure company in the world. The organization aims to ensure that its presence in a given market has a long-term positive impact by preserving the environment and empowering members of the community. The hotel has spent Rs. 13,439,700 on CSR initiatives.

Sheraton Karachi Hotel's major partners include UNICEF, Karachi Relief Trust, Family Education Services Foundation, Providence Home and Blind Nursery. The hotel's areas of activities have focused on education, disaster relief, children's rights, community involvement and environment. Some initiatives are discussed below.

Education:Some of the hotel's education-related initiatives include donating US$ 25,000 raised by its 'Check Out for Children' program. The donation was made to UNICEF in 2011 to build a Transitional Structure School (TSS) in Sujawal, Thatta. Under this program, guests who stay in any Starwood residence are invited to add a dollar to their bill upon check out - as a donation to UNICEF. This union among UNICEF, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide and its guests, has raised over US$ 25 million in support of life-saving programs for children worldwide. Following Sheraton Karachi Hotel’s donation to UNICEF, construction of the Government Girls Public School

(GGPS) Sakhi Badshah was completed in February, 2012. The original school was badly damaged by the 2010 floods. Additionally, Sheraton Karachi Hotel's team has donated funds to sponsor the education of nine girls and have helped them refurbish their building, Providence Home, which is a home to 22 young and bright girls in a neighborhood in Karachi. The Sheraton Karachi team also recently visited the campuses of the Deaf Reach School in Karachi. are hopes to open seven more schools in Sindh this year for young people who haven't been able to continue their education due to the damage caused by the floods. Also, as part of the hotel's flood relief initiative, "Give a Brick, Give a Break," Sheraton Karachi Hotel adopted flood-hit village, Jati Angario. Located in Thatta, Sindh, Jati Angario's inhabitants lost their homes and incomes due to the 2010 floods. With the help of funds totaling US$ 124,330 raised by Starwood Hotels & Resorts, the company joined hands with Karachi Relief Trust, resulting in residents’ homes being reconstructed. The residents were also provided basic facilities such as clean water. In February 2012, 35 houses were completed, and over 300 people had moved into their new homes and started earning.

Children's Rights:Sheraton Karachi Hotel also collaborated with UNICEF to host the first Forum for Children in November, 2011. The purpose of the forum was to engage the private

sector in Pakistan and highlight the rights of children while creating a platform to develop a children's agenda so that all the young ones can benefit from the program.

Community Involvement:The hotel has been working with the Green Fingers Botanical Garden Nursery, which employs children and adults who have various health disabilities but can help with managing and planting.

Environment:Some of the hotel's environment-related initiatives include a Co-generation (CHP) project with 2,000 Kilo Watt gas fired engines.

Today, this project is in operation and is over 80% efficient - producing 9,000,000 Kilo Watt environment-friendly natural gas. Steam recovered from the CHP drives a 500 RT (Refrigeration Tons) absorption chiller. This absorption chiller produces the hotel’s base load chilling requirement and replaces direct energy input with free energy recovered from the Co-gen (CHP) plant. The Co-generation Plant is the first of its kind at any hotel in Pakistan, producing high quality and cost-effective electricity to fulfill the hotel’s power needs. This plant also reduces carbon emissions. The next stage is to conserve energy on the demand side of hotel operations. For this type of energy conservation, the hotel lighting will be replaced by LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights.
