Looking forward we remain committed to working with our many community partners to provide healthy and nutritious food to our neighbors in need. From an expansion of our Summer Meals program (see inside story) to new partnerships designed to increase the amount of fresh food we are able to provide our clients, we will continue to fight hunger in our community. BP Screening Program – St Leo Food Bankby Eileen Weeg RN MSN

“Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the

world that is within our reach” ~ Clarissa Pinkola Estes

In the late fall of 2016 the healthcare ministry team at St. Leo’s began a dialogue of how to reach out to the greater community around St. Leo’s campus. The team was interested in providing a service that could have a positive influence on an individual’s health. The idea of providing blood pressure screening at the food bank was discussed. It was felt that the clients there may have fewer resources to monitor their blood pressure. Hypertension is a significant factor that negatively impacts health. Untreated hypertension leads to cardiovascular disease (stroke, heart attack, and congestive heart failure, etc.), and kidney disease. Also hypertension is known as a silence disease as usually one does not feel ill and isn’t aware he/she has hypertension until damage has occurred.

After prayer and dialogue at the healthcare ministry team meeting in January 2016, we decided to pursue providing hypertension screening. I spoke with Kevin Glackin-Coley and he enthusiastically supported our idea. Hypertension screening was initiated on February 14th. Screening is being provided once a week on alternating days for about 3-3.5 hours each session. In the first three weeks 36 clients have received screening along with heath education and written materials about hypertension. The program has been received well by the food bank clients. The plan is to continue this service.

Hope for Springbrook

The mobile food bank is truly a blessing for this community. We provide food at three different locations for families that may be running a little low on funds and need a little extra help. Knowing that our clients look forward to us being there every Saturday regardless of the weather gives us extra motivation. Our day is filled with warmth from the thankful faces and voices of each and every person that passes through our line.

I am new to the Springbrook mobile food bank and I am extremely elated to have joined such a fantastic cause of stopping hunger one day and one family at a time. Our team consists of volunteers, junior volunteers, and co-workers who always welcome me with amazing smiles, pleasant attitudes and plenty of food. Together, we are ready and willing to serve each and every person. Being Springbrooks’ Coordinator has given me a lot to look forward to and great ideas as to how we can progress our mobile food bank in the future.

I would like to give a special thanks to Mrs. Alyce! She has been my left and right hand. Mrs. Alyce made sure that I was introduced to each and every one of our volunteers personally at each stop. She has brought clients to me that were in need of some kind of assistance and together we were able to meet their needs. Most of all, she puts a smile on all of our faces, especially the children that come through with their parents. They all know Mrs. Alyce keeps a pocket full of goodies just for them! To all who help in any form or fashion I just want to say THANKS! And I look forward to continuing to grow with the Springbrook family.

Since its inception, the Backpack program has been growing each year to meet the needs of the schools in Pierce County. Through this program, students receive a bag each week with enough food to last them over the weekend. This past school year, the Co-Coordinators of the Children’s Feeding Program have been working on making the backpacks healthier and increasing the amount of bags going out to those in need.

Amy Shafer, a Lutheran Volunteer from Poulsbo, Washington, and Blair Bellis, a Jesuit Volunteer from Far Hills, New Jersey, are the current Co-Coordinators of these programs. Amy attended Gonzaga University and was drawn to work at the Food Connection because she had worked with children in impoverished situations before and was interested in the Children’s Programs that St. Leo provided. Blair attended Boston College

and was interested in doing a year of service after college and wanted to learn more about food justice and hunger. Together, they have been working to grow and improve the Children’s Feeding Program at St. Leo Food Connection.

One big change that has been seen in the backpack program is the addition of more fresh fruits and vegetables. Through partnerships with local businesses, the Food Connection has been able to serve apples, oranges, carrots, celery, and bananas to students in their weekend bags. These fresh fruits and vegetables replace foods like fruit snacks and other dessert like foods that have little to no nutritional value. We have also started a pantry system at some schools where instead of sending backpacks, we send food that gets placed in a pantry so that students can come and go and grab what they need from the shelves. This program has been very beneficial to some of the high schools that we work with.

At the beginning of the year, 28 schools were being served through the Backpack Program and about 700 children were being fed per week. Through word of mouth, news of our program spread and we have grown to serve 39 schools, feeding about 1100 children per week. This growth has been made possible by our incredible donors and volunteers. As the number of bags per week grew, more and more volunteers came to pack the backpacks, ensuring that it all got done. Our wonderful donors have funded the growth of the program, ensuring that we can buy enough food to feed everyone we serve.

As the school year draws to a close we look eagerly to the summer when our Summer Meals sites will be open to provide lunch around Tacoma and Lakewood five days a week. New sites are being identified, both federally and privately funded sites, to maximize the number of students that this program will reach and new volunteers are already expressing interest in preparing the lunches for the students. It is our phenomenal crew of volunteers that keep our programs running, without them our programs would not exist.
