A Survivor - Not a Statistic

It was September 2011 when Adam Dominguez found himself hanging from a two story

7/12 pitched gable roof in Espanola. All that saved him from a 17’ drop and serious injury

that day was his Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS). Adam had been working for Earl

Woody of Omega Builders and Roofing out of Chimayo going on eight months and was

installing an ice and water shield on a

reroof when he lost his footing and

fell.

Mr. Woody said that Adam looked

“white as a ghost” as they were taking

him down and once he safely reached

the ground Adam said, “Wow! I didn’t

realize how important the harness and

safe line was.” Although Adam didn’t

sustain any injuries Mr. Woody did

give him some time off so that he

could regain his composure before

returning to work. Cont. Pg 2

A Survivor - Not a Statistic

Like many young men Adam felt invincible prior to the accident and thought that it was cumbersome and a pain to

use the safety harness. Mr. Woody indicated that Adam is now the biggest advocate of its use.

Often we share statistics for various accidents on construction sites, but we thought for a change that we would

share with you an individual that didn’t become a statistic. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) saves lives and

helps prevent serious injury when used properly.

Omega Builders and Roofing is to be commended for having a solid safety program in place and stressing safety

on a regular basis with their employees. They also incorporate Builders Trust’s “Tool Box Talks” as part of that

program. Along with having a safety incentive program in place, they have also been the recipient of the Builders

Trust “Safety Award” several years running. Interestingly enough, the safety award Mr. Woody chose last year

was in fact a safety harness.

If you need assistance with your safety program feel free to call Frank Martinez our Field Safety Services Manager

at 505-345-3477 or 1-800-640-3369.

If you have a story you would like to share with other Participant/Owners that saved a life or prevented an accident

please contact Doug Johnston our Service Center Manager at [email protected].

To Accident Prevention!

IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN WORKING WITH PERSONAL FALL ARREST SYSTEMS

The employer shall provide for prompt rescue of employees in the event of a fall or shall assure that employ-

ees are able to rescue themselves as outlined in OSHA §1926.502(d)(20). Be sure to have a rescue plan in

place in the event a fall like this occurs.

Once a fall harness has been used in a fall, be sure to destroy the harness as it is no longer permissible to re-

use a harness once it has been exposed to a fall. Under §1926.502(d)(19), a competent person must inspect per-

sonal fall arrest equipment to determine that personal fall arrest systems and components subjected to impact load-

ing are undamaged and suitable for reuse.

Personal fall arrest systems are required to be inspected for wear, damage and other deterioration, and defec-

tive components shall be removed from service prior to each use by an employee who has been trained by a

competent person to do the inspection. OSHA §1926.502(d)(19) and 1926.503(a)(ii)

More accidents happen within the first year of hire. Having a solid safety program in place for new hires is

critical. For more information regarding OSHA regulations pertaining to personal fall arrest systems visit the following web

page: http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_document?p_table=INTERPRETATIONS&p_id=24685

National Association of Home Builders International Builders Show

As many of you are already aware, Builders Trust doesn’t only provide you with quality workers’ compensation coverage but we also support the construction industry in many different ways. One of our endeavours, is the sponsorship of one Participant from each of the nine local home builders associations in New Mexico to attend the NAHB International Builders’ Show. Builders Trust reimburses winners from a random drawing up to $1,000 to offset their expenses for registration, airline and hotel expenses. This year’s recipient from the Building Contractors Association of Otero County (BCAOC) was Billy French from French Brothers, Inc. out of Alamogordo and the following letter reflects on his experience at the show this past January.

2012 NAHB Show Trip to Orlando Florida for the NAHB Show

Held at the Orlando Conventions Center

Feb 7th - 10th, 2012

Billy French

I work at French Brothers Homes in Alamogordo, NM

Job description: Starts Coordinator & Purchasing

I attended the show with French Brothers Construction Manager, Justin Palmer & CEO, Tom

French. We all attended social functions, made new friends and contacts, along with taking educa-

tional classes that were going on during the NHAB / IBS Show.

Each day started off with educational classes at 8am and between classes I would go to the main

floor in the convention center to check out exhibits and products. I also got the opportunity to meet

with distributors for products and services we currently use at our company, such as Mark Systems.

There were so many exhibits & vender booths it actually took 3 days for me to see all the products

and services that were offered at the show. It was very overwhelming to try and see all the STUFF

the NHAB / IBS Show had to offer.

Events and Classes I attended included:

Meet & Greet with Top 20 Builders Group

Opening Ceremonies

Educational Classes

Exhibits & Vender Booths

Special Keynote Speakers

The classes that were available to all registered NHAB / IBS Show attendees were awesome; there

was truly something for everyone at the show. For a highly educational experience I encourage

everyone associated with commercial or home building, from planning all the way to sales, to attend

the NHAB / IBS Show.

For me the one thing that stood out the most at the NHAB / IBS Show was the friendly attitude and

willingness of all the Contractors, Distributors & Venders to share information to better the growth

of your company.

The 2013 NHAB / IBS Show is scheduled for Las Vegas NV January 22-24. For more information
