1.0 Introduction

In this Hands-on Labs session, we’re going to learn how to install, configure, administer and maintenance of the Linux Ubuntu Studio 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) server distro. Ubuntu Studio is clearly geared to general multimedia production. It’s packed with a large selection of open source sound and video editing programs pre-installed on the system that contains an amazing list of audio software for editing and playback such as Ardour, Audacious, Mixxx, JackLab, Musix and much more. Graphic design and modeling applications are also included such as GIMP, Inkscape and Blender, along with plugins like dcraw to help with RAW camera files and wacom-tools for people with Wacom drawing tablets. PiTiVi, Kino, Cinepaint are included for video creation. It also includes OpenShot which is great tool for video production. Ubuntu Studio comes on a DVD sized ISO. The installer allows you to select which groups of packages you want installed. The latest Ubuntu 11.04 also sports the new Unity Interface with lots of bundled apps that create a cohesive user experience that’s logical and easy to pick up and use. Ubuntu is now bringing something unique to the buffet of distros out there. In general Ubuntu Studio 11.04 Natty provides a suite of the best open-source applications available for multimedia creation. Ubuntu Studio is geared toward people familiar with professional tools. Completely free to use, modify and redistribute. Your only limitation is your imagination. There are some great feature too e.g., the ease-of-use that the Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) release has brought with it. One of these changes is the ability to allow the automatic installation of Flash, closed-source drivers, and support for MP3 and other non-free media while installing Ubuntu. Ubuntu Server delivers services reliably, predictably and economically, and easily integrates with your existing infrastructure. It has almost 100 open-source and proprietary application providers certifying their programs on Ubuntu Server Edition. Hand-on Solution: In this Hands-on Lab session, you’ll learn how to setup virtual network on VMware (you may also use any other virtual machines like MS VirtualPC, Linux Xen, or VirtualBox from Oracle). In this lab session, we’ll concentrate on installing Linux Ubuntu Studio 11.04 LTS Natty server.

Part 1: Install & Configure Ubuntu Studio 11.04 LTS Natty Server

Step 1: Getting Started & Hardware Pre-requisites

In this Hands-on Labs, it’s assumed that your target computer is connected to the internet. After installing the operating system, log into your machine and ensure you can perform software updates to bring your system up-to-date.

Step 2: Install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 LTS

1. Hope over to http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/releases/11.04/release/ website and download the Linux Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit Studio ISO which at the time of writing this lab manual was "ubuntustudio-11.04-alternate-amd64" or change as desired.

2. Once you have downloaded the Ubuntu ISO specific to your distribution, you have the option to burning it into CD or just by using the ISO package to install it from your virtual machine, in our case VMware.

3. Fire-up a new virtual machine and perform the initial configuration and setup to use ISO package.

4. Start the virtual machine, and you should be able to see the first Ubuntu installation screen.

5. From Fig. 1, select the language desired and hit Enter key.

47. If you’re connected to the Internet, you should see Update Manager notification at the bottom-left-

hand corner, as shown in Fig. 20.

Part 2: Moving around your Desktop

Click the Ubuntu icon at the left-hand corner to access applications installed. 1. Clicking the Accessories menu, leads you to the usual Linux applications found here.

Part 3: Recording and Editing Video with OpenShot

Step 1: Introduction

OpenShot Video Editor is a program designed to create and edit videos on Linux. It can easily combine multiple video clips, audio clips, and images into a single project, and then export the video into many common video formats. OpenShot is a non-linear video editor, which means any frame of video can be accessed at any time, and thus the video clips can be layered, mixed, and arranged in very creative ways. All video clip edits (trimming, cutting, etc...) are non-destructive, meaning that the original video clips are never modified. You can use OpenShot to create photo slide shows, edit home videos, create television commercials and on-line films, or anything else you can dream up. OpenShot is a stable and easy to use video editor for Ubuntu and is also available in Spanish, French, and Italian. Supported Features Overview: The following are some of the supported features:

• Support for many video, audio, and image formats (based on FFmpeg) • Gnome integration (drag and drop support) • Multiple tracks • Clip resizing, trimming, snapping, and cutting • Video transitions with real-time previews • Compositing, image overlays, watermarks • Title templates, title creation, 3D animated titles • SVG friendly, to create and include titles and credits • Scrolling motion picture credits • Solid color clips (including alpha compositing) • Support for Rotoscoping / Image sequences • Drag and drop timeline • Frame stepping, key-mappings: J,K, and L keys • Video encoding (based on FFmpeg) • Key Frame animation • Digital zooming of video clips • Speed changes on clips (slow motion etc) • Custom transition wipes, lumas, and masks • Re-sizing of clips (frame size) • Audio mixing and editing • Presets for key frame animations and layout • Ken Burns effect (making video by panning over an image)

• Digital video effects, including brightness, gamma, hue, greyscale, chroma key (bluescreen / greenscreen), and over 40 other video and audio effects

Step 2: Accessing OpenShot Video Editor

2.1 Launch OpenShot from GUI Window

To launch OpenShot Video Editor from GUI, perform the following procedure: 1. Clicking the Sound & Video Video Production menu, and then click on the OpenShot Video

Editor menu.

2.2 Launch OpenShot from Terminal Window

4. To launch OpenShot from the command-line, click Accessories Terminal menu. From the Terminal, issue the following command:

openshot <filename>

Note: the optional <filename> parameter can either be an audio or video file, or OpenShot project file (*.osp). You can also specify multiple files (with spaces between each filename), and all files will be imported into a single instance of OpenShot.

Step 3: Staring a New Open Shot Project

1. To start a new OpenShot video project, click File New Project, menu. Alternative you can achieve the same task by clicking on the New Project… icon as shown Fig. 24.


Step 4: Importing the Video into OpenShot Editor

In this section I’ll show you how to import your videos for editing. 2. To import you videos for editing, click File Import Files menu, as shown in Fig. 25a.

3. From Fig. 26, select the desired Video and then click +Add icon to import the videos.

4. You now have you imported the video ready for your project, as shown in Fig. 27.

Step 5: Exporting from OpenShot

Exporting videos is also pretty easy, you can export your video in multiple formats. 6. To do this, click on red button to export your edited video, as shown in Fig. 28.

7. An Export Video dialog-box will open-up as shown in Fig. 29. When done selecting your desired options, click on the Export Video button at the bottom.

Part 4: Recording and Editing Audio with

Graphic designers, movie editors, music composers, and multimedia addicts have specific needs when it comes to software. In this section, we’re going to look at audio applications that come with Ubuntu–Studio distro. This includes apps for organizing and listening to music, CDs, podcasts, Internet radio streams, and other audio sources. We’ll also be looking at apps for burning CDs, tagging, fixing, and converting digital audio files, as well as a few light recording and editing packages. 1. You’re done with this section – and for time being we’re taking a break from the lab.
