Build the Bed Frame

Leg

2. Install the bed connector hardware on the legs. Mark the location of the hardware plate on the leg. Use a 5/8"-dia. straight router bit and router table to cut a stopped mortise. The mortise should be 9/64" deep to match the thickness of the hardware. Square off the corners of the mortise with a chisel. Next, mark the position of

the secondary mortises that the rail hooks will fi t into. These mortises must extend below the plate openings by 7/16" to allow the hook to slide down and seat on the leg plate. Drill out these mortises and square off the corners with a chisel.

1. Cut legs and rails to size. Use a Rockler Taper / Straightline Jig to taper cut the inside faces on each leg.

3. BED CONNECTOR HARDWARE 4. ASSEMBLE RAILS

4. Assemble the front and back rails and legs with the Rockler Beadlock Joinery Kit. Bore the Beadlock mortises in the rails and legs. Then apply glue in the mortises, insert the Beadlock tenons in the mortises, and clamp the legs and rail together.

3. Install bed connector rail hook brackets hardware on the ends of the side rails. In this case we cut the mortises for the rail hardware using a router table. Because the bed rails are nearly 80" long, using a router table for this operation requires a shop ceiling that is over 10' tall. If your shop has ceiling that is less than this height, then use a hand held router or cut the mortises by hand with a chisel and mallet. Square off the corners of these mor-tises with a chisel. Next, mark the location of the metal pins on the back of the hook plates. Use a 1/4"-dia. bit to bore 1/4"-deep recess holes for these pins. Attach the rail hook brackets with 11⁄2" screws.

1. VENEER PANELS

1. Cut the 1/2"-thick birch plywood outer and inner headboard panels to size. You can choose to keep the birch plywood veneer as the fi nished surface, or apply a new veneer, or paint the panels. In this case we chose to apply a piece of maple veneer over the front and back faces of each panel. We used a 2' x 8' piece of peel and stick veneer. We laid out the veneer so that the grain runs continuously across the headboard panels. Use slightly oversized pieces of veneer, letting the edges overhang the panels. Then trim the veneer with a router and fl ush trim bit.

3. Cut the headboard rails and stiles to size. The headboard frame parts are assembled with Rockler Beadlock Joinery. Bore the mortises for the Beadlock tenons in the rails and stiles.

4. The headboard panels are captured in grooves that are cut in the rails and stiles. Cut 1/2"-wide x 3/8"-deep grooves in the vertical rails. Use a router table and 5/8" straight bit or table saw and dado set to cut the grooves.

3. MACHINE GROOVES 4. MACHINE GROOVES

5. The grooves in the top and bottom horizontal stiles must be made as stop cuts to prevent seeing them exposed on the ends of the boards. Mark the start and stop locations of the grooves on the stiles and make plunge cuts with a router table and 1/2" straight bit.

6. Dry fi t the panels, rails, and stiles together to be sure everything fi ts properly. Then disassemble the headboard, apply glue to the Beadlock tenons and ends of the stiles, and reassemble and clamp the headboard parts.

5. ASSEMBLE HEADBOARD FRAME 1. MACHINING SUPPORTS

1. The headboard mounts on the bed frame on two headboard posts. Cut the headboard support posts to size. Then use a table saw and Rockler Taper / Straightline Jig to taper cut the inside face of the headboard support posts.

2. The headboard support posts are secured with dowels. Clamp the headboard support posts to the headboard and back bed frame rail. Drill 3/8"-dia. holes through the post and into the headboard and back rail. Be careful not to drill through the headboard and rail. Coat the inside of the holes with glue and then tap in the dowels. Trim the dowels fl ush. Sand the entire project and apply fi nish.

2. ATTACH HEADBOARD 3. INSTALL BED FRAME

4. Measure diagonally across the wood frame and adjust to square up the frame. Drive 21⁄2" screws through the I-Semble Bed Frame into the wood cleats.

3. This bed project is designed to support the queen size I-Semble Bed Frame with Wooden slats. The bed frame is supported by wood cleats that are attached to the side rails. Assemble the I-Semble Bed Frame. Position the bed frame level inside the frame to fi nd the cleats locations. Cut the cleats to size and attach them to the rails with glue and screws.
