NEWSLETTER OF THE HAWKEYE CHAPTER NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2013 Issue 7 2013 BUICK CLUB OF AMERICA MEET YOUR NEW HAWKEYE DIRECTOR FOR 2014 Who is this New Hawkeye Chapter Director? My name is Bill Gorman; I have been married to Brenda for 28 years. We have raised two children in Huxley, IA. Our daughter Elizabeth is married and lives in Altoona, IA and our son Daniel lives in Louisville, KY. I’m 59 years old and teach Diesel Technology at Des Moines Area Community College. Brenda teaches middle school at Ballard schools. I have always enjoyed cars; I have not owned a lot of cars, because I keep them too long. In my early years I liked Corvettes and convertibles. When I was 25 years old I bought a plain 1967 Corvette roadster. It had the base 327 engine with a powerglide transmission. I kept it for 12 years; I only sold it because it would not hold 4 people, I never drove it. I told Brenda that I wanted a 4 passenger convertible. In 1993 I stumbled across a 1969 Buick GS 400 convertible. Purchasing a Buick was not my plan, but after seeing the car and reading about Gran Sports I was more interested. Fast forward to 2006, I was at a crossroad, either spend the money to restore the Buick or sell it. Restoration won and two years later in 2008 I drove it to my first Goodguys in Des Moines. In 2009 at a car show in Ames, Rick Young came up to me, introduced himself and handed me his card. He told me that the BCA National was scheduled to be held in Ames in 2010. I was interested enough to find how to enter our 1969 Buick GS 400 Convertible in the 2010 BCA National. That is how I joined the Hawkeye Buick Club and the BCA. My first meeting was in Cedar Rapids, planning for the Ames BCA meet. This year, in 2013, we have owned the Buick for twenty years. It has been driven to the 2010 BCA National in Ames, 2011, Buick Regional in Wisconsin, 2012, Buick Regional in St Louis, and 2013 BCA National in South Bend. I like the atmosphere of the BCA and AACA enough that I plan on driving to as many of these events as possible. Have a Happy

    Holiday Season

Minutes of the November 9th 2013 meeting at 11:00 AM, Story City, Iowa.

The Hawkeye Buick Club met in Story City, Iowa for the annual holiday meal and the final meeting for 2013. By my count, 34 members and guests enjoyed a delicious meal supplied by Linda and her granddaughter. After our meal we were treated to “Name That Pie “word game and an exercise in identifying automobile names from their advertising slogans. Harold Werley had asked about the chapter song book. Roger Volker supplied the answer with a piano rendition of a couple songs from the book. What are chances that a piano was conveniently available? I want to thank Roger for bringing the song book back to life. Some members participated in a gift exchange. Gifts were supposed to be a $10.00 maximum. Gene Upstill treated everyone to a paper puzzle pick up of your choice and color, thank you Gene. The business part of the meeting was started by Harold Werley, under the heading of old business. Harold had asked the member’s opinions to a few questions in the October report.

Do we wish to have birthdays/anniversaries published in the newsletter? The consensus was it is OK as long as exact dates and ages are not used, just months. I might add

this item is strictly on a volunteer basis. The members must supply the information. Does the chapter wish to make a donation to the Buick Bugle Patron program? After a discussion it was decided that the Buick Bugle does not need our donation at this time. It was announced that chapter membership renewal forms will be mailed mid to late December, 2013,

with dues payable by January 31, 2014. Renewals not returned by January 31 2013 will not be included in the official roster. Late memberships will be announced through the Dynaflash.

Do we need multiple chapters in the state? We do not have a large membership; the bad part is we are spread out across the entire state and

then some. Members of both sides of the state would still have travel time to events, if they joined another chapter. We are better off staying as we are and trying to plan events with those members on the borders in mind.

Treasurer’s Report: Gary Gleason reported that the available balance at the beginning of the meeting

was . At the October meeting it was decided that the club would pay $7.00 toward each

member’s meal today, that cost will be deducted. New Business: Harold turned the meeting over to the officer selection committee of John Hemmingway and Bill

Barquist. Director: Bill Gorman’s name was the only name put up for nomination. He was approved

with a voice vote. Assistant Director: no nominations Treasurer: Harold Werley’s name was the only one nominated. He was approved with a

voice vote. As the Director of the Hawkeye Buick club for 2014, I would like to thank several members:

Harold Werley for his service as past Director. In my opinion Harold worked his tail off trying to find acceptable meeting places and events. Harold had a part in planning 9 events in 2013 with 2 events cancelled due to low participation. Harold attended 6 of the 7 events that were held. Gary Gleason has decided to give up his position as club treasurer. I understand that Gary has held this position for many years. We need to thank Gary for his service to the club.

Continued next page. Ellen reminded me that we may have forgotten to thank Bill and Marilyn Barquist for

planning the November meeting and making arrangements for the food. Thank you both for a job well done.

I have only been a member since 2010. I admitted that I do not have much knowledge of the club history. Pat Brooks and others admitted that they may have items related to the club’s history. Pat mentioned that we may need a club historian. Gary Gleason volunteered to start compiling club history items.

I took the opportunity to ask the members what they thought about having a Hawkeye Buick club web site. I have noticed that about half the Buick clubs have their own web site. Jim Jaeger mentioned that social media is the way to promote yourself. I informed the group that I have had communication with Justin Labaito, a web designer. Justin has given me an estimate of $500.00 to design the web site; the club would have a yearly expense, and the web site would belong to the club. Some members expressed a concern because they do not own a computer. I want to assure everyone that this would not affect their current method of receiving club information.

I do see this as a positive way to promote the club to potential new members and what we do.

The club is probably in its best financial position in years; I look at this as a way to invest in ourselves. I stated that I was not ready to give Justin the OK before I made contact with him again and see if he is still interested in this project. Pat Brooks recommended that I get all the details, then make the proposal in writing. I agree that is the best way to proceed, this item will be tabled for now.

I hope this year to see more existing members attend events organized by the club, rather than the same ones all the time. I also hope to see some growth in membership. I think this can be accomplished by taking Vicki Stolenberger’s advice, all of us should talk to Buick owners we see at various events and car shows and invite them to join our club. I see no problem with people attending an event as a guest before joining.

I want everyone to feel this is their club and they have a voice. If you have a suggestion or complaint please contact me. I want to wish everyone a happy holiday with friends and family.

Meeting was adjourned 2:00 PM Submitted by Bill Gorman

    HAWKEYE CHAPTER MEETING NOVEMBER 2013

The chapter banner made an appearance. The banner has a habit of doing a disappearing act as club officers change. It recently was found hiding in a club member’s basement.

Making appearances at this gathering were the Brooks’ 1949 Super Wagon, the Upstill’s 1940 street rod and John Hemingway’s 1954 Roadmaster. Most other members drove modern, some coming over 400 miles to the meeting.

Would you believe the first order of business at the

Hawkeye meeting in November was testing the membership knowledge,

conducted by our departing Director, Harold Werley. We were tested on items such

as naming types of pies and identifying the cars

    associated with specific advertising slogans.

    The man with the answers

Santa left packages for all the good boys and girls.

Major attraction is always the food.

Roger Volker never saw any musical instrument he did not love. Here Roger is assisted by our outgoing Director, providing the group with selections from the chapter music book for a sing-along. Lost for many years, a copy of the song book was produced by Roger. It was handed off to our new club Historian, Gary Gleason, to be preserved for further musical renderings by the membership.

Hawkeye member David McDonald writes about his Riviera for the Riviera Owners Association

When you read the Review, you'll see plenty of

stories about of the memories and family

histories that include Buick Rivieras. Indeed, as

I prepared to write this article, I re-read some of

those stories from ROA members. I found each

    and every article interesting.

I have to note, however, that my family drove

only other GM makes, so I have no family

memories of Buicks to pass along.

1 have been a member of the ROA since 2005,

so I am a relative newcomer. I have also been

a member of the Iowa Hawkeye Chapter of the

BCA for 34 years, so I have owned Buicks for

work and for pleasure as a hobby. My pleasure

cars have all been convertibles from the 1960s.

    My favorite non-Riviera Buick was a 1965

Electra convertible with a dark blue interior

and white top. My boss commented that 1 liked

big cars, "bought by the yard" or "yard cars" as

    he called them

  • DYNAFLASH NEWSLETTER OF THE IOWA HAWKEYE CHAPTER BCA Page 8

The history of my '83 Riviera convertible has a small twist to

it. The car was delivered to the].1. Homan Chevrolet/Buick/

Oldsmobile dealership in Oakes, ND, late in 1983. The ROA

article on 1982-85 convertibles reports that during the 1983

model year, more convertibles were built (1,750), but sales were

stagnant and the dealers had a backlog of these cars. It should be

noted that the base price for the convertible was $24,960, almost

$10,000 more than the coupes. This may be the reason this car was

not sold to the first owner until January 1, 1986 with only 99 miles on

the vehicle. The first owner was also from Oakes, ND.

The second owner from Bloomington, MN purchased the car in

1994 with 77,000 miles on the vehicle. He had the car repainted,

performed usual maintenance, and kept the car extremely clean. He

also provided me with a great deal of original documentation on the

    car.

The acquisition of this 1983 convertible was an enjoyable experience,

but I have always enjoyed the hunting and tracking-down process.

This purchase back in 2005 was made easier because the seller did

not over-represent the car and it was actually better than expected. It

was the first Riviera convertible I had looked at, but I made him an

offer he couldn't refuse and the deal was sealed. On this trip [ was

accompanied by two friends who also own 1982 and 1983 Riviera

convertibles. Their cars are also painted in Red Firemist.

The vehicle had just over 100,000 miles on it when I brought it home

to Minnesota. I have driven it 6,000 miles since. There is nothing

better than driving this car with the top down, even though the Iowa

climate limits the available opportunities. As with many older cars,

maintaining the Riviera takes time and money but that is a small part

of owning a "special" car. After joining the old car hobby, I quickly

realized that no matter how much effort is spent on the cars, the

people you meet and new friends you gain are worth much more. ~
