Jesus’ Gift of Peace

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me… Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid…

world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” -John 14:1, 27; 16:33

This year, all our hearts have been troubled. This year, we have all had tribulation. This year, we have all been afraid. The difficulties of 2020 could lead us to an entirely negative outlook. We could find ourselves thinking only about our problems.

As we approach the season of Thanksgiving, however, I am reminded of Jesus’ gift of peace. He told us that we would have troubles in this world. He never promised us an easy path. What he did promise is the peace which comes from his own victory. Jesus has overcome the world through his death and resurrection! Therefore, we can lift our eyes from our problems and see again the blessings which can never be taken away from us. No power in the universe can separate us from God’s love. No scheme of the evil one can snatch us out of the Father’s hand. Jesus has already won the decisive victory, and nothing can change that fact!

Martin Luther King, Jr. knew a good deal about suffering. In a brief article for The Christian Century King wrote about some of his tribulations: “Due to my involvement in the struggle for the freedom of my people, I have known very few quiet days in the last few years. I have been arrested five times and put in Alabama jails. My home has been bombarded twice. A day seldom passes that my family and I are not the recipients of threats of death. I have been the victim of a near-fatal stabbing. So in a real sense I have been battered by the storms of persecution.”

King persevered through these sufferings because of his deep faith in God. He personally knew the surpassing value of Jesus’ gift of peace. In a sermon entitled “God is Able” King declared, “… God is able to give us interior

chief legacy to his disciples. He offers neither material resources nor a magical formula that exempts us from suffering and persecution, but he brings an imperishable gift: “Peace I leave with thee.” This is that peace which passeth all understanding.”

Brothers and sisters, let us believe in God and in Jesus his Son. Let us rejoice in Christ’s gift of peace, through which we can endure the tribulations of life with gratitude and hope.

- ANNOUNCEMENTS — Ladies Fellowship first Thursday of each month at 1:30 pm

All ladies are welcome to attend! Fellowship - Devotions - Refreshments

Nancy Bicard would like to “kick off” this fall by taking a supply of donated pantry items to Woodburn Christian Children’s Home in Indiana at the end of November.

If you could help the kids and families at the home, it would be very much appreciated. There will be a table under the coat rack where you can pick up a list of their needs and also to place your donations. Thank you.

Can you believe it? It’s almost here—Christmas is right around the corner! There is so much joy surrounding this season, but there can also be a lot of chaos! There are decorations to put up, parties to throw, and presents to purchase. It’s so easy to let the en-tire month of December fly past us and totally forget why we celebrate Christmas. That’s why this year we’re hosting

“Dough Holy Night”

This is a fun and interactive experience de-signed for your family to do at home.

Together you’ll bake a batch of Christmas cook-ies and, along the way, hear the story of the very first Christmas. Best of all, there’s a video that walks you step-by-step through the entire experi-ence. It’s so simple! To get started, click this link: https://www.gocurriculum.com/dough-holy-night-parent-portal to access the video and materials. When prompted, you’ll need to enter the following password: LETSDOUGH (all caps). Even though this is an at-home experience, we want to share it as a community! So be sure to post pictures and videos of your kids in action, then tag us (@Buchanan Christian Church) to share your experiences with each other! And don’t forget that Jesus is a gift worth sharing, so share this post with others to enjoy the fun with you. We’ve even provided an invitation for you to use at the above link.

We hope and pray that this opportunity allows you to press pause on the busyness of the season and remember that Jesus is the sweetest part of Christmas. There will be a date to pick up cookie materials, date is TBD still. -- Brandon Smith

Thankfulness and Being Human Judy and I had just left a sandwich shop where we ate lunch. A woman with a smile on her face came up to our car window, holding a sandwich. I rolled down the window to see what she wanted. She said, “Are you the ones who paid for my sandwich?” She said the store employee told her she didn’t owe anything because a person ahead of her had paid. I told her that I was glad for her, but we were not the ones who had done this generous

her day, but she was disappointed that she didn’t get to thank her benefactor. We have many people to thank, such as soldiers, police, firefighters, and teachers. But our greatest thankfulness should be directed toward God. There is something about humans that makes us want to express our gratitude. It’s part of what makes us different from the animals. Our pets are loyal to us because we feed them, and they get excited when they see us open the food container. But only humans are motivated to express genuine gratitude. The Psalms often express thankfulness to God for the things He has done. Reformer Martin Luther called thankfulness “the basic Christian attitude.” G. K. Chesterton once wrote, “The worst moment for an atheist is when he is really thankful and has nobody to thank.” We often show thankful-ness toward each other, but our highest debt of gratitude is to God. One evidence of God’s existence is that not only does He give us many good things, but He also has given us the desire and ability to say, “Thank you.” In Romans 1:21, the apostle Paul wrote about godless people, “…they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” As we experience a very different kind of Thanksgiving season this year, take time to thank God, who has given us all good things.
