MATARAM - Lombok's Gunung Barujari part of the Gunung Rinjani volcano complex on the island of Lombok has been placed on a "caution" (waspada) list by Indonesian ocials following a rash of continuing explosions, sometimes throwing molten ash 1,200 meters skyward.

On Tuesday, May 4, 2010, the mountain spewed thick chocolate-colored smoke. Gunung Barujari is 2,376 meters high and is conjoined with Gunung Rinjani which stand 3,726 meters tall. According to Kun Dwi Santoso, the chief of the Mitigation of Disasters Section of the Geological and Mineral Resource service from the Mining and Energy Department for West Nusa Tenggara, a large explosion on Monday, May 3rd created 1,500 meter high ash cloud. Smaller explosions followed in short duration. On Tuesday the seismic station at Gunung Rinjani recorded a series of strong explosion. Ocials have responded to the mountains volcanic activity by declaring the area under a general caution for those living near the mountain and tourists climbing the Rinjani's peak. Ash falling on the north slope of the mountain has also interferred with farmers' crops.

Bali Customs Destroy Illegal Alcohol Cachesource : blog.indahnesia.com

DENPASAR - Bali's Customs Oce bulldozed 2,824 bottles of contraband alcohol on Friday, May 6, 2010, in the parking lot of their Bali Ngurah Rai Airport oces. The bottles of wine and hard liquor were estimated to have a value of Rp. 600 million (US$ 65,200) were seized in a number of raids conducted by Bali Customs Ocers in 2009 and 2010 on illegal caches of booze not bearing ocial duty stamps.

Of the total number of bottles crushed by a bulldozer were 1,539 bottles of

imported wine and liquor and 1,285 bottles of illegal locally produced bever-ages. The falsied customs stamps destroyed by Customs totaled Rp. 98 million (US$10,600).

The drinks destroyed were accumulated from cases that have reached nal deter-minations in the judicial process. Other caches from recent raids can only be destroyed after the completion of the legal cases in which the alcohol serves as evidence. The Bali Customs Oce currently has 9 separate cases involving illegal alcoholic beverages before the Denpasar Courts.

At Cazbar we are probably the only bar in Indonesia where you can go from the rst oor to the second oor with a lift. Reason we have this lift is that there are another 4 oors above us with oces, one of which is occupied by Ex-Vice President Try Sutrisno, but that's another story.With an increasing middle and upper class society in Indonesia, the creativity of Indonesians struggling to survive, often amazes me. Birman, who sells second hand newspapers is a good example of this. And how many of you expats haven't won-dered why your pairs of socks is so often not complete? Could it be your pembantu (servant) who once in a while 'forgets' to match them in pairs, 'maybe' hoping that you throw them away? Surviving on the side-lines. There is this company in Jakarta who sends girls around to your oce to clean your telephones. They come in uniform and look almost like a disinfection team. They wipe your phone thoroughly and spray some fragrance on the horn. There are so many examples of the 'little jobs' and it is always a pleasure to discover them. In Indonesia there are more than anywhere else, I am sure.I was sitting in Cazbar on the new red sofa. I was trying it out. While I sat there, a bit dreamingly, I hardly noticed this Indonesian guy coming in. It could have been a delivery boy

or one of the oce boys from the oors above the bar, I didn't really pay any notice. He silently passed by and pressed the button of the lift. I noticed a roll under his arm that he tightly pressed to his body. Then I wondered: didn't I see this guy yesterday with a roll under his arm as well? And the day before? The doors opened and he quickly disappeared in the lift. Less than 30 seconds later he came out again, still with a roll under his arm. It started to intrigue me as I couldn't nd out what he did with that roll. It became even more confusing when I saw him leaving on the back of a motorbike. Now he was holding at least 10 rolls of 2 meter length in his arms. He had trouble keeping them all together while the motor dangerously hit the road in front of Cazbar.

The next day he silently came in again, and this time I followed him into the lift. I kept my eyes straight on the young man and I was not planning to leave him out of my sight, which was impossible anyway in such a small space. He waited for me to push a button. Automatically I pressed the 2. He now pressed the 5. He kept the roll, some kind of fabric, tight to his body. His eyes looked down to the oor, maybe he was shy, I gured. The lift stopped on the second oor. The guy looked up to me, like he was telling me: are you gonna move out of this lift or what? I stepped out of the lift. I felt defeated by this little man with his mysterious roll. I waited for the lift to come down again. I wanted to have a look on the fth oor. It wasn't necessary. When the doors opened, the guy was there, with his roll and he was going down. Obviously he had done what he had to do on that 5th oor and whatever it was he did it quickly. I was puzzled but I didn't want to ask him. I gured I just had to wait another day.

The next day I was sitting ready on my sofa. I knew he would come at 7.30 sharp and so he did. I followed

him again into the lift and the guy by now certainly started to get nervous. My suspicious look must have worried him as he now kept looking at me in distress. I didn't press a button. He didn't press a button. Finally I pressed rmly on the 5 and crossed my arms. We went up, look-ing each other distrustful in the eyes. But on the fth oor he didn't step out. I pointed my both arms towards the open doors to let him go rst but he shyly refused. We went down again. I got out but then he went up again! He tricked me again! These Indonesians are much more clever than the average bule, I tell you that.This had to stop. I waited for him to come down. His face expressed shock when he saw me waiting for him. 'Ngapain kamu balik!?' (Why did you turn back?) I asked him. With his eyes wide open, he slowly released the initial tight grip on his roll. And without giving a blink, he slowly opened the roll of fabric, which turned out to be a small carpet. 'THURSDAY' it read in large letters. I looked into the lift behind him. A clean and nice carpet with the words 'FRIDAY' was spread on the oor. Stupid bule I was. He rolled up the roll and quickly went outside where his mate on the motorbike was waiting with more carpet rolls. When they clumsily drove o the driver was laughing loudly while the carpet man was telling him the story over his shoulder.

I appreciate these young Indonesian men for running another one of these 'small' businesses that keeps Indonesia aoat and interesting. Their business was only that: supply-ing clean carpets with the name of the day on it and making sure it is changed every day. It is just now -while I write this (real) story- that I realize that I haven't seen the carpet guys for a while. I look in the lift and indeed, its a plain carpet with no day on it. They lost their contract. Maybe they had a day wrong? No idea. But now the carpet is dirty. And so is my telephone.

Taiwanese Boss Indicted Over Pork-Fed Indonesians

Tapei-Taiwans labor authorities on Thursday urged employers of foreign workers to respect religious custom, after a company owner forced Muslim Indonesian sta to eat pork, while ocials in Jakarta have expressed concern over the incident.

We urge respect for the freedom of religion for foreign workers and we encourage the workers to complain if their rights are violated, the Labor Aairs Council said in a statement.

The remarks came after prosecutors indicted a garment factory owner and sought an eight-month jail term on charges she forced three Muslim women workers from Indonesia to eat pork.

Chang Wen-lin, the owner of Hsin Hua Hang factory, had threatened to cut the womens salaries if they refused to eat meals that were also oered to local employees, prosecutors said.

The factory owner, whose permit to hire foreigners was revoked in the wake of the scandal, said she thought eating pork would provide them with energy, according to legal documents.

The incident surfaced after the three led a complaint with Taipei ocials saying they were overworked and had not been paid for around eight months.

Taiwans mass-circulation United Daily News said the case was widely reported in the Muslim world via international media and dealt a huge blow to the islands image.

Indonesias National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) on Monday expressed anger over the report.

This goes against basic human rights, which include the right to freedom of worship, commissioner Johny Nelson Simanjuntak told the Jakarta Globe. How dare anyone force others to eat food they are prohibited from eating.

A spokesman for the Manpower and Transmigration Ministry, Budy Hartawan, told the Globe the ministry would seek clarication from the Indonesian Economic and Trade Cham-ber in Taipei.

We are going to ask them to protect our citizens, he said, adding the case was unprecedented.

PEKANBARU - The destruction of the tropical rain forest in Riau is just stunning. Of the 9.2 million hectares of rain forest existing in 1982, even before the provinces of Riau and Riau Islands were formed, only some 860.000 hectares is left now. In just 28 years some 8.3 million hectares has vanished completely.

"People working for the corruption watch-dog KPK or president Yudhoyono should come here themselves to see how rampant corruption here really is," said the head of the Riau department of the Indonesian Environ-ment agency Walhi, Jhony Setyawan Mund-ung.

According to Mundung, illegal logging of Riau is started by the former regent of Pelala-wan, Azmun Jaafar. He has been sentenced to eleven years in prison for his actions. The regent of Siak, Arwin A.S., has been pointed a suspect by the KPK, as well as the regent of Kampar, Burhanuddin Husin. Although they are suspects, they are still free men. The governor of Riau, Rusli Zainal, is most likely also involved in the disappearance of the rain forests in his province.

Mundung explained that the largest part of the destruction is caused by the presence of two large producers of paper; Asia Pulp and Paper and the APRIL Group. They are currently producing some 4.3 million tonnes of wood, an extremely high volume compared with other producing areas like North Sumatra and Kalimantan where only some 200,000 to 300,000 tonnes is produced every year. This also causes rapid decrease of the forests in Riau.

Damage to protected rain forests is no exception as well. The 14 protected areas all suer under illegal logging. The Mahato reserve has lost some 280,000 hectares completely for example. The Bukit Betabuh reserve has largely changed into a large plantation and national park Tesse Nilo is currently only 70,000 hectares large.

"It seems like that Yudhoyono does not really have the political will to do something about the ecological disasters caused by illegal logging like ooding and forest res. It is fairly simple, if Yudhoyono really wants to tackle the problems here he only has to send an SMS to the head of the national police or the KPK to pick up this case," says Mundung.

DENPASAR - After angry complaints from arriving tourists compelled to stand in line at Bali's airport for up to four or more hours, the border control management (BCM) procedures requir-ing ngerprints and photos of arriving passengers have been ditched on instructions from the Minister of Justice and Human Rights. In operation for only a week, the additional layer of bureaucracy of photographing and ngerprinting arriving tourist was added to the tasks of immigration ocers already overwhelmed with administering a multi-step visa-on-arrival process. During peak trac times at Bali's airports delays exceeding 4 hours were reported after the introduction of the new procedures. On Monday, May 3, 2010, the nger-printing and photography requirements were suspended until further notice reducing waiting time more normal parameters, but a still intolerable 2 hour period during peak trac periods. The government has promised not to reintroduce the system until an adequate amount of equipment and personnel can be put in place to facili-tate the smooth ow-through of arriving passengers.

Despite the hasty retreat by immigra-tion authorities, criticism of the poor level of service provided to Bali's inbound visitors persists. Ida Bagus Ngurah Wijaya, the Chairman of the Bali Tourism Board, quoted in Radar Bali, said the short-lived BCM measures did damage to Bali's tourism industry. Wijaya said the now-abandoned police had little use and was just the latest in a list of "sloppy" actions performed by the agency in charge of guarding the nation's gateways.

Days after his appointment as chairman of the National Bureaucratic Reforms Direction Committee, Vice President Boediono on Friday said he would soon release a plan to accelerate the transfor-mation of government.

We have been working on the blueprint and were just waiting for the process to be formalized, Boediono said in his keynote address at the Top Executive Forum on Governance in Nusa Dua, Bali.

He said that although a generation would be needed to achieve a clean government, much progress has been made since the reform era started in 1998.

Boediono said that bureaucratic reform has only been implemented in a few government institutions, the Ministry of Finance being one of them. The blueprint of the 2010-15 reform program currently being prepared is expected to be used as the basis to reform every government institution.

I hope this will help surpress the practice of judicial maa in the bureau-cratic institutions, he said.

In the plan, Boediono said there are three basic requirements for a clean and eective government: political stability, an eective bureaucracy and a rational program for social and economic development.

The key to create a clean government is a program that is pro-people, to materi-alize justice, peace and welfare, he said.

To achieve this, the blueprint empha-sized the importance of rooting out corruption and money politics and of having clear lines enforced between businessmen and bureaucrats.

Boediono said the current democracy should serve the publics aspirations and provide real benets, economic and otherwise.

The vice president said that despite the establishment of the reform committee, the government will maintain ad hoc institutions such the Corruption Eradica-tion Commission (KPK) and the Judicial Maa Eradication Task Force.

Those institutions are needed as long as Indonesia is still under a period of democractic consolidation like now, he said.

The National Bureaucratic Reforms Direction Committee was announced by presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha on Wednesday.

The committee members include the political, legal and human rights coordi-nating minister, social welfare coordi-nating minister, economic aairs coordi-nating minister, state minister for

administrative reforms, nance minister and home minister, Julian said after a cabinet meeting.

He added that in practice, a bureaucratic reforms team headed by the state minis-ter of administrative reforms, EE Mangindaan, will evaluate the perfor-mance of each ministry and state institution.

He said the cabinet session, which was chaired by the president, produced the outline for the road map for the 2010-15 reform program.

Julian said the blueprint lays out a program of sound government manage-ment as a foundation for national bureaucratic reforms, with strategic policies and standards for overhauling state institutions. The plan also clearly states performance standards.

Julian added that an indicator of success would well the bureaucratic reforms are implemented at regional levels.

The indicators of success require that no corruption or other crimes are committed, regional budgets are good, all programs are running well, all permits are issued without problems, there are no overlaps in the bureau-cracy, normal communication with the general public, the eective and ecient use of time and rewards and punishments, he said.

Mas Ahmad Daniri, chairman of the National Governance Policy Committee, said that cleaning up government would take a long time and the eort required building wide-ranging consen-sus among government institutions, the private sector and civil society.

To hasten implementation of the bureaucratic reforms, aside from legal enforcement, the supervision system needs to be more eective, including through the whistle blowing system, he said.

Vice President Boediono, chairman of the National Bureaucratic Reforms Direction Committee, is planning to accelerate the transformation of government.

People coming up saying I hear it was a great nightor if they were there themselves they say I had a ball at Bugilsin case they remember.

I have worked and lived in bars since I was 15 years old. As my father owned pubs in Australia. As all good managers know you cant please all customers. And there will always be complaints. And you take these complaints on board and you note them down. But it is always dierent when the shoe is on the other foot. Or people dont really dont know the full story when really it was just a storm in the teacup.

This is a bar, a great bar at that. And we are in the business of selling alcohol and some-times things dont go the way we want. But we always try to please every customer that comes through the door at Bugils. So I will end it there and I will meet youse at the bar for pigs ear (beer).

Engineering Hell

An engineer dies and reports to the Pearly Gates. St. Peter checks his dossier and says:"Ah, you're an engineer, but you worked for a high-tech startup company and got rich. You've had too good of a life, so now you can't come in here."

So the engineer reports to the gates of hell and is let in. Pretty soon, the engineer gets dissatised with the level of comfort in hell, and starts designing and building improve-ments. After a while, they've got air conditioning and ush toilets and escalators. The computers are all upgraded and there are speaker wires running to every room. Even the clocks on the VCRs are set. The engineer becomes a pretty popular guy.

One day God calls Satan up on the telephone and says, "So, how's it going down there in hell?" Satan replies, "Hey, things are going great. We've got air conditioning and ush toilets and escalators. The computers are faster than ever and we've got music in every room.There's no telling what this engineer is going to come up with next."God replies, "What??? You've got an engineer? EP in Pics

The EP Pool teams played each other for the 1st time in a competition and this turned out to be an emotional event. Best friends were playing each other for real this time and that didn't go to well: there was some thrash talking and intimidation during the games, yours truly was put in an non neutral position (blackmailed?) by the biggest guy on The Empty Promises, someone got hit on both knee caps with a cue stick, a black ball went missing when The Lost Promises were winning etc.... Only with the help of much much beer was I able to get some of the players together for a group photo...

Ex EP Bartender Retno (left) and her boyfriend Pete (no, that is not Pete) are soon going to Boston to open an Indone-sian restaurant. We wish them all the best and think that the Bostonians are very lucky people. Moving in the opposite direc-tion was Jim Swanson (Swanny). After an absence of 1 year, we are happy to have him back at his usual spot in the bar...

The extremely rare and much sought-after map of Java with very good recent colour by Francois Valentyn is from his eight-volume history of the East Indies entitled Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien that was published in Amsterdam by Gerrard Onder de Linden and the bookseller Joannes van Bram between 1724 and 1726.

The work contained numerous charts of the major islands including this very large map of Java which consists of seven separate printed sheets that when joined, form the longest map of Java, at 1.75m, ever printed. The map has soundings around the whole coastline of Java and a lot of information on land-use, topography and settlements in early 18th century Java. The map measures 360 mm x 1,750 mm.

This began with the publication of Lindschotens book, which contained the secrets of the Portuguese who had sailed to the East one hundred years before. The result was the end of the Portuguese control of the spice trade and the domination of the Dutch for the entire 17th century, which is also known as the Golden Age of Holland.
