District Governor Presents Two Grants to Rotary Club of Florence

Written By: Patrick Moynahan

District Governor Dean Ham-mond presented two grants total-ing $2,700 to the Rotary Club of Florence to support community service projects.

The club will incorporate one of the grants in its fund-raising efforts to assist GO Pan-try, which provides food boxes for Boone County school children who do not get enough to eat at home.

The club will use the other to purchase volleyballs, basketballs, and footballs for Christmas gifts for youngsters in partner-ship with Steinford Toy Foundation.

“Florence has got it going,” said Ham-mond, who oversees 36 Rotary clubs east of Interstate 75 in Kentucky. “This club knows what it’d doing; it knows what’s it about.”

Hammond made the presentation at a luncheon meeting on Oct. 29 at Hilton Cincinnati Airport. He also recognized three Florence Rotarians who previously served as district governors and noted the club has long been among the pacesetters in District 6740.

For example, Hammond pointed to the club’s creation of a district-wide Interact Club for young people 12-18 as the “point of the spear” in innovative projects and applauded founder and leader Barb Rahn.

“When someone like Barb is out there doing the job she does, it produces energy within the district,” Hammond said. “That energy ripples right through the district.”

The money for the district grants comes from donations to the Rotary Foundation

annual fund. Fifty percent of the money contributed from each district goes back to that district.

With almost 100 members, the Rotary Club of Florence is one of the largest clubs in the district.

Some of the smaller clubs have only 4-5 members but they still manage to stage fund-raisers and conduct community pro-jects, according to the district governor.

Hammond urged Florence Ro-tarians to look for opportunities to help other clubs in the district to develop, perhaps teaming up with them on projects.

Rotary International also funds global grants that match up partners in different countries, he noted earlier, including one that will provide water and sew-er service in Clay County in Kentucky. Clubs throughout the district contribute to that project.

“We (Rotarians) connect the world,” Hammond said. “Each one of us is a leader. We lead in our family, we lead in our church and we lead in our workgroups.

“We get together and say let’s exchange ideas in a peaceful way, find the best answer and go take action,” he added. “We put all that extraneous nonsense aside and get the job done.”
