Important Course and Participant Information Summer 2020 Professional Development Participation Disclaimers

Teachers may only register and/or participate in one professional development or summer school teaching assignment per day totaling 3.5 hours or less of District paid activity per day. Teachers may not attend paid professional development on the same date(s) as working a summer school assignment.

Teachers who have a tenure status of Temporary may not participate in any summer professional learning opportunities.

Virtual and Self-Paced Course Offerings

This summer Buffalo Public Schools will be offering two formats for delivering Professional Learning Opportunities, virtual and self-paced.

Virtual Courses

Virtual Courses are courses done in a virtual classroom where the students and the instructor are in separate locations. The virtual classroom is the digital learning environment students join to engage in an online course. In this environment, students and instructors can interact with each other and engage in learning utilizing their computer's microphone and web camera.

Self-Paced Courses

Self-Paced Courses are courses that proceed based on the student response. The content will be available in Schoology and does not require the immediate response of an instructor.

Title: MATH: Zearn Math for Grades 1-5 - Virtual (30899) Course Description: Grades 1 through 5 mathematics teachers will be introduced to Zearn, its platform and its purpose, and how it will be used to support Math Module centered instruction in the 2020-2021 school year. Zearn Math will be used to provide supplemental instruction and online practice for students. Zearn Math brings together hands-on teaching and immersive digital learning that is aligned to the NYS Math Modules. The result is multiple pathways into math concepts and more opportunities for support, for every child.

Remuneration: Participants will be paid at the contractual rate

Title: MULT: Cultural Considerations when Working with Multilingual Learners - Virtual (30895) Course Description: This virtual course is designed to provide Teacher Aides and Teaching Assistants with an overview of the common cultural groups in Buffalo Public Schools and the implications for working in the classroom with students as well as with families.This course is being offered virtually. The instructor will facilitate the course using the conference feature in Schoology. All participants must log in on the first day of training for a technology check, to ensure course and resources access. The course will begin on day two at 8:30 a.m.

Remuneration: Participants will be paid at the contractual rate

Title: APPR - Lead Evaluator 2020-2021 – Virtual (30426) Course Description: A full day training session will fulfill the six hours of in-person training required for 2020-2021 Lead Evaluator re-certification. During training, instruction and support will be provided to lead evaluators of teachers on what is required per the Buffalo Public School 3012d APPR process and MOU enacted in January 2017. This session includes instruction to help lead evaluators of teachers to demonstrate proficiency in completing a teacher practice observation using the negotiated NYSUT Rubric indicators, evidence collection, scripting and entry using the district’s APPR management platform. Participation in this required training applies to building and central office administrators.

Title: OSA - Data Driven Inquiry - Virtual (30762) Course Description: Participants will be given the most up-to-date version of the DDI process to review and bring back to their building. We will review the new DDI form, and what is needed in each section in order to complete the DDI process successfully. We will also review and discuss what an exemplar meeting would look like. Please note that this course is completely voluntary. Participants completing all 3 one hour sessions will receive 3 hours of CTLE credit. No partial credit will be given. You must attend and complete all three sessions/classtimes within a section to receive CTLE credit.

Title: SD - Supporting Early Literacy: Building a Foundation in Phonics for Teaching Assistants - Virtual (30909) Course Description: This 3 hour virtual course is designed to provide teaching assistants the basics in early literacy instruction through a focus on how and why students need solid instruction and reinforcement in phonics (the ability to correlate sounds with letters or groups of letters in an alphabetic writing system.). Participants will learn and practice correct speech sounds with correlating letters, how to reinforce segmenting and blending words orally, and prepare materials that they can use with students when they are working in classrooms.

This training will complete unit 1 and cover the majority of unit 2.

Title: SPED - High Leverage Practices in Special Education - Virtual (30881) Course Description: This course is designed to assist special education teachers in building capacity in their knowledge of High Leverage Practices in Special Education. The participants will improve their ability to support students with disabilities through the use of Evidence-Based, High Leverage Practices based on the most current research in the field. Participants will practice applying the High Leverage Practices to their current practice by participating in a collaboration board, website tour, video analysis and break out discussion session to discuss ideas for improvement within their own practice.

Title: CLRI – SD - Culturally Responsive Classroom Pt. 1- Virtual (30796)

Course Description: These professional development sessions will introduce participants to creating culturally

relevant lessons so that children see themselves in the curriculum through an affirmation of their history and culture

resulting in increased student achievement, the closing of the achievement gap and the fostering of a commitment to social

justice. Participants will view classroom clips, reflect on their experiences and discuss the necessary components of a

culturally relevant lesson. Educators will walk away with how to begin teaching culturally relevant lessons at their sites, a

curriculum supplement, a literature list, and a bibliography. This proposal will use the terms culturally relevant and

culturally responsive interchangeably when referencing pedagogy, curriculum or classroom environment. Cultural

proficiency will be used to discuss the educator's journey to honor each of his or her students, to combat racism and to

commit to social justice.

Title: CLRI-SD- Culturally Responsive Classroom Pt. 2- Virtual (30797)

Course Description: The professional development session will allow participants to creating culturally relevant

lessons so that children see themselves in the curriculum through an affirmation of their history and culture resulting in

increased student achievement, the closing of the achievement gap and the fostering of a commitment to social justice.

Participants will view classroom clips, reflect on research findings, discuss the necessary components of a culturally

relevant lesson, and work collaboratively to complete a unit lesson that is culturally responsive. Educators will walk away

with how to begin teaching culturally relevant lessons at their sites, a curriculum supplements, a literature list, a

bibliography and the resources of the department lessons that are created during the session. This proposal will use the

terms culturally relevant and culturally responsive interchangeably when referencing pedagogy, curriculum or classroom

environment. Cultural proficiency will be used to discuss the educator's journey to honor each of his or her students, to

combat racism and to commit to social justice.

Course Description: Participants will learn the need for Restorative Practices in schools (to address

disproportionality, provide an alternative to the failed zero tolerance policy, and develop social emotional competencies).

Participants will learn and participate in a ceremony circle. Participants will learn how to use Restorative Practices with

staff, how and when to use Restorative Conversations, and how to hold problem solving circles. Participants will receive

an overview of the practices at the advanced Tiers, including Restorative Conferences, with some opportunity to practice

at this level as well.
