CELEBRATING

One of the great joys and privileges of putting together 360 every quarter is the fact that it forces all of us who work on it – and it really is a massive team effort – to appreciate anew the

beauty and the opportunity all around us.Like most East Londoners, we too, can get caught up in focusing

on the many things that need improvement in our city. And sadly, the more you focus on the negative, the bleaker the picture becomes.

The good news, however, is that there is so much more to celebrate and enjoy than there is to lament, and this edition of 360 is certainly testament to that.

From the great adventure attractions on our doorstep, to our archaeological treasures and the inspirational people who call our city home, this edition is packed with good news stories about why this is still one of the best places in the country to work, play and raise your family.

But it is up to all of us who love this region to share the best of who we are with the rest of the country.

As chief copywriter Ruth Ritchie is fond of saying, 360 is unashamedly proud to be a cheerleader-in-chief for our city, and for the wider Amathole region – and we urge all of you to join us in celebrating this magnificent part of the country.

After a nippy winter, spring is here. Go play!

FOREWORD

September is National Tourism Month, and what better place to celebrate this

important industry than right here in Buffalo City – a city which is increasingly becoming known not only nationally but internationally for our rich and varied basket of

tourism products and potential.I am especially proud of the fact that Buffalo City

was chosen this year, over many other candidates, to host the national government’s official Tourism Month celebrations.

A warm word of welcome to all our national visitors and delegates, and thank you for choosing Buffalo City as the host city of these very important proceedings.

We are confident that our city, and the wider region, will provide the ideal backdrop for the tourism and tourism-related issues that will be under discussion during the flagship Tourism Month events

planned for our city.A special word of thanks and congratulations to the

Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism whose hard work resulted in these celebrations being anchored in our city.

We continue to work closely with the department as well as with the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency, to showcase our many world-class tourism attractions, and we remain confident that this hard work is laying important foundations for the revitalisation of tourism-related commerce in our city, and beyond.

To all our visitors, thank you for choosing our city as your holiday destination. We are proud of our amenities and our many attractions, and we trust that you will fully utilise and enjoy all that we have to offer during your stay.

> ABSEILINGAbseiling is one of the fastest growing extreme

sports in the country – and it’s easy to see why. What’s not to like about attaching yourself to a harness and rappling down a sheer cliff face, as Rocky Heath discovered (page 14) when she and fellow 360 staffers went face-to-face with Mother Nature at Morgan’s Bay recently? Unlike rock climbing, which requires both skill and previous experience, abseiling is safe and enjoyable even for the complete novice. And thanks to our rugged coastline and dramatic elevations, we have some of the most spectacular abseiling experiences anywhere in the country. Contact Rock IT on 084 407 2313.

> BUNGEE JUMPINGThe Eastern Cape is proud to claim the world’s

third highest commercial bungee at Bloukrans Bridge, just four hours’ drive from East London. Jumpers are secured in a full body harness and have to walk along a specially designed catwalk which is suspended beneath the road surface, which will then lead you to the top of the arch – 216m above the Bloukrans River. Here you’ll receive final instructions by highly experienced staff, a countdown and off you go! Bloukrans utilises pendulum bungee technology ensuring the smoothest, most comfortable jump possible. Contact Face Adrenalin on 042 2811 458.

> BOATING, CANOEING, KAYAKINGHome to a number of fantastic rivers, beautiful

scenery, and a climate made for outdoor enthusiasts, the eastern half of the Eastern Cape is the perfect place to indulge a passion for paddling. There are more great canoeing and kayaking opportunities here than you can shake a life jacket at, just ask for details from your hotel, B&B or resort hosts.

> MICROLIGHTINGWhat better way to see our beautiful coastline

and rugged interior than from the air? Come Fly With Me offers introductory flights that promise to

take your breath away. Literally! No skill or previous experience necessary, just bring a hearty dose of adventure and fun. For more information contact them on 083 860 5078.

> PARAGLIDINGIn Buffalo City the sky is, quite literally, the limit,

with excellent ridge soar and some fantastic scenic flying opportunities. Paragliding is common along the coastline but the hot interior also offers world class thermals that are much sought after by more experienced gliders.

> SAILINGThe East London Yacht Club benefits from

fantastic sailing conditions and the club has a well-earned reputation as one of the most efficient but also the friendliest and most hospitable around. It has successfully hosted many large national championships over the last 30 years, including the Fireball, Hobie, Laser and Dart Classes national and world. There is also a fantastic Learn-2-Sail programme for kids on Saturday mornings. Contact Wayne on 083 375 6001 for details.

> WHITE WATER RAFTINGIf you like your rafting experience to be of the

white knuckle variety, head inland to Barkly East, where Wild Mountian Adventures offer a variety of trails and tours, including the popular three-day weekend tour. Contact them on [email protected].

> ZIP LINESAreena Riverside Resort offers visitors a unique

zip line skywalk. This breath-taking attraction consists of 10 zip lines, of which the longest spans over 150m and the tallest stands a full 70m. A fun, thrilling and adrenaline pumping two-hour adventure guaranteed to stay with you for a lifetime. The tour takes place within a private game park, near the abseil krantz, overlooking the beautiful Kwelera River, Leopard Kloof and Areena Valley. Experience the true beauty and get in touch with nature. Contact Areena on 043 734 3055.

Thanks to a mild climate and temperate weather almost all year round, the region is fast gaining a reputation as one of the

country’s most ideal adventure destinations. And we have the facilities, the infrastructure and the facilitators to support it. From surfing and angling to gliding, diving, hiking, horseback riding, sailing, 4x4ing, canoeing and kayaking, there is very little you’re not going to be able to do in and around the city. Even bungee jumping and skydiving is available only a few hours’ drive from East London.

Here’s a sample of some of the exciting adventure activities available in and around our city:

> AMATOLA The challenging Amatola traverses the Amatola

Mountains through the most breath-taking landscape imaginable, rambling between indigenous forests and glades, grasslands and pine plantations. The trail starts at Maden Dam near King William’s Town and finishes at Tyume Forest station, 3km from Hogsback. Most of the route passes through ancient indigenous rainforest with towering Outeniqua yellowwood, sneezewood, wild olive and lemonwood. Colourful fungi, orchids, watsonias, falling stars, and red hot pokers contribute to the enchanting forest scenes. Hikers have no shortage of cascading waterfalls and swimming pools to cool off in. Parts of the trail are steep and strenuous but the effort is rewarded by the magnificent views alone! Overnight huts with bunks and mattresses, braai facilities, firewood, water and toilets are provided. Not recommended for unfit hikers.

> STRANDLOPERThe Strandloper Trail treats hikers to a subtropical

carefree meander through incredibly scenic rocky shores, sandy beaches, grasslands and coastal scrubland. Starting at the Strandloper Ecotourism Centre at Cape Morgan, the southbound paths eventually reach Gonubie on the last day.

Endless wave-washed seascapes, interesting tidal pools, unspoiled river estuaries, cool forests and golden sand dunes characterise this varied route. Some sections of the trail offer lovely snorkelling in the gullies.

Hungry hikers can grab a hearty pub meal and drink at various hotels and pubs along the way. Overnight huts all have ablution facilities. There are also braai facilities with the exception of the Cape Henderson hut, where no fires are allowed.

A TALE OF TWO HIKESIn addition to a plethora of shorter and gentler hikes, the Eastern Cape boasts two of the country’s best and

most popular multi-day hiking challenges: the five-day Strandloper and the six-day Amatola.

Dust off those hiking boots, and get that adrenalin-filled blood pumping through

your veins again: spring has arrived, bringing with it an adventure experience of a lifetime.

A short 75km drive from East London brings you to Morgan’s Bay on the Wild Coast where the cliffs rise up steeply from the sea, begging to be climbed.

The short hike to the rock climbing area is so breath-takingly beautiful and peaceful, you almost forget that in a couple of minutes you are going to be climbing right over the edge of one of those stunning cliffs.

Rock climbing and abseiling isn’t just looking at a rock and then deciding to climb it - different styles, techniques, types of rock,

as well as safety issues need to be considered. In the capable hands of climbing instructors Rob and Cheri Stewardson, founders of RockIT Adventures, all safety equipment is explained and their reassuring knowledge of climbing techniques and specialised equipment lays to rest any initial trepidation.

With our hearts thumping an exhilirating beat in our chests and our minds racing in anticipation, one by one we gear up and line up. One by one we take a deep breath, step over the edge and experience the sheer exhilaration of being suspended high above the ocean, a school of dolphins frolicking in the waves below us - followed by free climbing up a 900 rock face using nothing but sheer focus and tiny cracks and hollows put there by mother nature herself. An absolute and unexpected thrill of a lifetime!

After conquering a seemingly impassable craggy cliff on this wild stretch of Eastern Cape coastline, I can say with absolute certainty that

you will awaken the adventurous spirit within you - and feel more alive than you have in a long time. Unlike anything you have experienced before, with enough adrenalin to satisfy the most adventurous of spirits - all wrapped up in the most beautiful scenery the Eastern Cape has to offer.

Rock IT Adventures experienced husband and wife team, Rob and Cheri, run informative and adventure-filled tours for groups of up to 8 people. They also have a climbing school for interested parties. to experience it yourself - call 084 407 2313 or email [email protected]

The province is rich in biodiversity with contrasting landscapes featuring primeval coastal forests and white sandy beaches, diverse wildlife, ancient rock art and Xhosa culture, offering the intrepid explorer an adventure of a lifetime.

Eastern Cape launches

The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) has developed a new Coastal Route covering nearly 900km of pristine coastline spanning the length of the Eastern Cape. The new Coastal Route is designed to appeal

to both self-drive and group tourists looking for an authentic and memorable travel experience. The route is divided into eight regional routes that will take travellers to the Eastern Cape’s less explored and off-the-beaten-track attractions to discover the heart and soul of the province.

The eight regional routes include Baviaans, Tsitsikamma Adventure, Kouga, Frontier Country, Sunshine Coast, Amathole Mountain Escape, the Wild Coast, and Greater Addo.

Addo Elephant Park... and moreThe benefit of the Coastal Route is that it will highlight not only the Eastern

Cape’s well known and iconic attractions such as the Mkhambati Nature Reserve, Addo Elephant National Park and the province’s amazing beaches and surfing spots, but it will also take travellers to some of the undiscovered places of natural beauty.

Nature’s Rest is one of the most beautiful resorts in the Eastern Cape, and does exactly as its name promises: It takes you back to nature, while you relax and enjoy the lovely environment.

The resort sits on the banks of a lagoon estuary in a sheltered valley just outside “the city with holiday town spirit” that is East London. The Zamnyana River cuts through the hills that encircle the park, creating tall rocky cliffs and crystal clear pools below. You’ll find a safe bathing beach only a mere 10-minute walk away, almost exclusively used by Nature’s Rest visitors. Nature’s Rest offers 20 self-catering fully equipped rondavels and 35 caravan/camping sites overlooking the lagoon.

For sand dune enthusiasts, the 6500-year-old Coastal Dune Field found at Alexandria is the largest shifting dune field in the Southern Hemisphere and has been nominated for listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other attractions include the Amathole Mountain Escape and Port St Johns, Jewel of the Wild Coast.

For those interested in history and culture, tourists can view ancient man-made fish traps at Cape St Frances and experience Grahamstown, a small city that boasts more than 70 heritage sites including a cathedral and the surrounding Victorian and Edwardian shop fronts on the Church Square. Alternatively, you can spend time visiting the final resting place of Sarah (Saartjie) Baartman the “Hottentot Venus” in Hankey, visit the Xhosa cultural hub of the province in the Wild Coast and experience mouth-watering dishes in East London, surrounding game reserves and in Port Alfred.

Go jumpAt Tsitsikamma adrenalin junkies can participate

in the third highest commercial bungee jump in the world, take a treetop canopy tour or go black water tubing. Those who like their thrills a little more sedate, can spend a few days at one of the many 5-star game lodges, play golf, go fishing or just relax at a spa. The Eastern Cape has it all. Other highlights along the Route include Jeffrey’s Bay, home of the

best right-hand wave in the world; Port Elizabeth, a water-sport paradise offering every conceivable coastal and marine recreational experience one could think of including the added thrill of deep sea diving to explore a few of the 300 ships wrecked in nearby Algoa Bay.

There are six blue flag beaches along the coastal route including the world-renowned kite-surfing spot at Cannon Rocks.

The Baviaans Wilderness Area is an extension of the Cape Floral Kingdom and has been declared a World Heritage Site. Addo Elephant National Park abutting the Indian Ocean is the only protected area in the world where not only the “Big 5” (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) may be seen but also whales and Great White sharks.

The Wild Coast covers untouched beaches with waterfalls running into the sea. The annual sardine run rivals the famous Masai Mara wildebeest migration in East Africa. The area is rich in cultural diversity, including the birthplace of Nelson Mandela with a National Museum in Mthatha dedicated to the origin of his footsteps. The area is home to many of South Africa’s historic leaders and human icons such as O.R. Tambo and Walter Sisulu. This region is also known for its authentic Xhosa culture tradition, art amenities and other adventure activities.

For more information visit www.openafrica.org/route/coastal-route or call 043 701 9600.

The route incorporates suggested itineraries based on interesting things to see and do as well as value-for-money local accommodation which

are sure to extend visitor stays in the province.

Leaving our markThe Nahoon human

and animal trace fossil footprints

Buffalo City is home to one of the world’s most exciting trace fossil discoveries - the 124 000-year-old homonin footprints fossilised into the soft sand at Nahoon Point, which are recognised as one of the oldest human track ways on Earth. East London Museum scientist KEVIN COLE explains the significance of this magnificent find.

It is hard to imagine the significant impact a young child made on the history of Buffalo City through the simple action of walking along a dune at

Nahoon Point. Rainy weather had produced a perfect template of damp sand which traced the footprints of a child as he or she walked toward the sea.

Over time the impression of toes, an instep and heel of numerous prints left by the leisurely stroll hardened and were preserved by layers of sand building up over the track way.

These lithified (fossilised) footprints were discovered approximately 124 000 years later in 1964 by two municipal officials, Bill Hartely and Rhett Kaiser. To date these are still one of the oldest human track ways on planet Earth made by anatomically modern humans (our early, early cousins).

Presenting evidence of human habitation in the region, and now part of the Nahoon Point Nature Reserve, these trace fossil footprints have focussed attention of human evolution studies along our coast and over time may contribute to a wider study being conducted along the southern Cape coast. The search for the original home base of all humanity right here along the coast of southern Africa!

Trace fossils form part of a scientific discipline called ichnology and the importance of the Nahoon

prints is that they are also associated with animal trace fossil prints. These include two mammal species (possibly a mongoose and a Cape Hare) and a sea bird (maybe an African Oystercatcher). All this activity on the dune took place over a short space of time, perhaps on the same day, and leads to questions still to be answered.

A scientific method called optical luminescence dating (of the Nahoon sandstone) has revealed a revised age of the rock in which the prints were found from 29 000 years to 124 000 years. Dr Dave Roberts of the Council of Geoscience led this initiative. The original sandstone slabs containing the human and animal trace fossil footprints are housed at the East London Museum (after they broke away naturally from a cliff close to Nahoon Point).

Dr Roberts and myself have found additional animal track ways during excavation work undertaken at Nahoon. It is hoped that more human trace fossil prints will be discovered. Nahoon Point Nature Reserve also has a rich heritage of archaeological material as noted by numerous shell middens (refuse sites for shellfish collected from the rocks as a high protein food source), Middle Stone Age (MSA) stone tools and palaeoanthropological artifacts (such as a fossilised human femur).

Members of the public have greatly assisted the museum by discovering important finds. In 2010 the Barnhoorn family reported an animal trace fossil track way close to Bat’s Cave and in 2011 Garron Lewis found a segment of fossilised human femur in the inter-tidal zone at Nahoon Point. These finds confirm the importance of this stretch of coast as a potential treasure trove for science across a number of disciplines.

Humankind’s curiosity with our origins has been well documented and Buffalo City is to be commended for protecting this heritage as new discoveries will help to solve a puzzle which is both intriguing as it is relevant in a world that challenges the long-term survival of a species known as homo sapiens.

The well-preserved sandstone at Nahoon is one of the larger outcrops of this type of rock along the coast. Wave action over millennia has carved coves, wave-cut platforms, Bat’s Cave and sandstone stacks. Natural erosion and large sandstone slabs breaking away may also, in time, reveal further trace fossil track ways.

These track ways form when the action of carbonic acid in rain water acts with the carbonate in the loose sand to form a kind of cement which lithifies the sand particles together to form sandstone. During this process the human and animal track ways were preserved and later discovered contributing to our scientific knowledge.

Looking at the Nahoon fossil track ways one may wonder if there was some predator prey interaction between the mongoose and the birds or the Cape Hare. Was the child moving toward the shore-line to predate on a washed up seal or dolphin, or just to collect shellfish? Where were the parents, siblings or other relations? What occupied their time besides foraging and making stone tools and how did they think about the Earth? Some thoughts to ponder when next visiting Nahoon Point Nature Reserve. − Kevin Cole

Kevin Cole is a scientist with the East london Museum.

An exhibit of the trace fossil footprints found in large slabs of coastal sandstone rockface are on display at the museum.

Come find yourblissThe Eastern Cape has no shortage of exquisite

family holiday options. From idyllic, sun-drenched beach retreats to exhilarating nature adventures –

there is, quite literally, something for everyone. But why be forced to choose? Such is the luxury of

our region’s tourism offerings that we boast a number of gorgeous leisure resorts which quite literally offer the best of all worlds.

Trennerys Hotel on the Wild Coast is one such spoilt-for-choice option.

A picturesque, family-friendly beach hotel just a short hop across the legendary Kei Mouth pontoon, Trennerys is both all you expect from a coastal resort – sun, sea, tall cocktails by a shady pool – and much, much more.

Thanks to its exquisite setting on the legendary Transkei Wild Coast, the hotel offers that one magical ingredient us city dwellers most crave – complete and utter escape. Close enough for an easy weekend break, it nevertheless seems a million miles from the madding crowds of stressful urban living.

Your only obligation here, it seems, is to relax, regroup and be reminded of how indulgently refreshing it is to be focused on nothing more strenuous than enjoying the thundering crash of Wild Coast waves, or the melancholic moan of a soaring fish eagle.

But if lounging by the pool and dreaming ahead of the hotel’s by-now legendary Saturday evening seafood buffet seems a little sedentary, there’s more than enough adventure activities to satisfy even the

most tireless of thrill seekers.Mountain biking, canoeing, tennis, volleyball,

rock and surf fishing, horse-riding and some breath-taking 4x4 and hiking trails – it’s all on hand. And even if it isn’t, chances are Trennery’s ever-helpful and knowledgeable staff will probably move a mountain or two to arrange it for you.

Being a bit more cocktail than rock-trail minded myself, I found my bliss on the beach and next to the pool. But like most parents, my litmus test for scoring family resorts is yay or nay from my hard-to-impress tween daughter.

At 11-and-a half (and don’t forget the half!), getting the Dana cool-factor nod is no mean feat. But having boated across a choppy lagoon, hiked through a forest, navigated a mountain canyon and swum in a spectacular rock cliff pool, the verdict was unambiguous. Suffice to say, I am being strong- armed as we speak to book our return visit to this tranquil dollop of Wild Coast magic. − Ruth − Tanya Jonker

Trennerys Hotel on the rugged Wild Coast is the perfect getaway spot - close enough for an easy weekend break.

A trip to Trennerys is simply not complete without signing

up for one of the resort’s famous Trevor’s Tours. A fountain

of information, Trevor has introduced thousands of visitors

to the region’s exquisite fauna and flora, the ecological balance

and its fascinating history. In addition to his spectacular hikes,

which include a truly breath-taking lagoon and river cruise,

Trevor has also recently introduced a guided 4x4 trail. See the

Wild Coast as it was meant to be seen, with Trevor as your host.

Ouma has been rescued! After months of uncertainty about whether the Eastern Cape’s iconic rusk brand would remain in the

province, parent company Foodcorp has announced that our beloved Ouma is staying put.

Foodcorp had been considering moving its Ouma operation from Molteno, about two-and-a-half hours’ drive from East London, to Gauteng.

However, in a move to save local jobs, and mindful of Ouma’s intrinsically Eastern Cape heritage, the provincial government has stepped up and forged a public-private partnership.

“We have a strong connection with Molteno and understand our role and responsibilities as active participants in the local economy,” says Foodcorp CEO Justin Williamson. “And so I persuaded my board to agree to us reinvesting in Molteno on moral and ethical grounds – financially it is a poor decision‚ but it was absolutely necessary.”

Mcebisi Jonas, Eastern Cape MEC for Economic Development‚ Environmental Affairs and Tourism‚ said the partnership proved private enterprises and the government could successfully work together to the benefit of the communities that they serve.

Ouma Rusks date back to 1939, when local entrepreneur Ouma Greyvensteyn – with just half a crown (about R2) worth of ingredients and her bo-baas baking skills to rely on – started what may well have been the province’s first tuisnywerheid.

Ouma sold her rusks to the visiting farmers’ wives, and within days, the orders began pouring in – and the rest is soft, doughy, dip-perfect history!

More than 80 years after this humble beginning, Ouma Rusks is not only one of the most popular brands in the country, it is also a staple – along with Mrs Balls and Simba chips – of the thousands of home grown food parcels sent to expats around the world every month.

According to Ouma’s official website, Ouma Greyvensteyn – by all accounts a remarkable person who since her younger years had actively participated in Molteno’s cultural and art activities – remained personally involved in the operation for many years.

“Her dream of a large rusk factory with oven chimneys seen against the horizon later became a reality and today, having expanded extensively from its humble beginnings, the Ouma factory is still situated on the farm Friedenheim, just outside Molteno.”

Ouma Greyvensteyn passed away in 1989, just shy of her 99th birthday, but her name and her legacy lives on.

CHINTSA ACTIVISTSTo keep an eye

on developmenT

A new environmental group has been established to lobby for consultation and responsibility in the development of the exquisite Chintsa coastal region.

CRED – or the Chintsa Resources for Environment and Development – already has an active Facebook community and is in the process of expanding its online presence.

“Our primary interest relates to the environmental impact of development, and to the processes required for us to be involved in development planning,” says founding member Gill Harris.

“We want people to better understand the big white sign that announces an EIA process – what it means and how one can engage with it. We hope to break the myths around engagement being understood as negative. It is our intention to strongly encourage the idea that engaging in these inclusionary processes means you are interested, care about the environment and want to be a part of the evolving and bigger picture for your area.”

While development and environmental impact is a key focus, Gill says, the group won’t limit itself to this one aspect.

“General issues relating to the environment around us will also be addressed.”

CRED is keen to hear from anyone interested in these processes and are actively looking for people with knowledge and expertise in environmental issues relevant to our area, EIA processes, environmental law and such to contribute to their information pool.

For more information on CRED, or to get involved in this important initiative email [email protected] or find them on Facebook.

With its unique geographical location – nestled between the laid-back Sunshine Coast on Route 72, Hogsback’s Amathole Mountains and the

unspoilt Wild Coast – the gateway city of East London is fast gaining ground as a serious competitor in the South African conferencing and events landscape. Its well-connected airport and convenient travelling distances coupled with high-quality amenities and attractions, all within easy reach, inspire a special ambiance ideally suited to MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) tourism.

South Africa’s only beachfront convention centre The East London International Convention Centre

(ELICC) situated on the beachfront just 15 minutes from East London Airport, the Industrial Development Zone and all major industries is raising the profile of the Eastern Cape and Buffalo City region as an exciting new conference destination both nationally and internationally. The ELICC has not only hosted major conventions such as SA Psychiatrics Congress and SA Heart Foundation but has been awarded Best Congress & Convention Centre, Africa in the prestigious Business Travel Awards 2011.

Lying on South Africa’s south-eastern coast, Buffalo City is best known for its great natural beauty and spectacular beaches. More recently, the addition of a world-class international convention centre is contributing to the region’s rise in status as a business travel destination.

NkosinathiJoyi“Mabhere“

IBF mini-flyweight champion Nkosinathi Joyi, also known as Mabhere, is taking the boxing world by storm with what fans of the sport describe as a rare combination of raw talent and gutsy determination in the ring.

Joyi, who was born and raised in the Eastern Cape, is a former SA Amateur Champion who defended his title four consecutive times as a senior athlete.

Since turning pro in 2002, he has held world titles in both the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) and the International Boxing Federation (IBF), leading the prestigious American boxing magazine, Ring, to rate him the world’s best pound-for-pound boxer in his weight division.

But like so many home-grown heroes, Joyi remains, despite his international success, both grounded and humble. In fact, the affable athlete seems much more at ease discussing his heroes than his own accomplishments in the ring.

“I look up to and admire so many boxing greats,” he says, “people like Vuyani Bungu who by defending his IBF Junior Featherweight title a record 13 times made

history that every township boxer should be proud of.”“I am a south paw and a hard hitter by nature, so

Marvin ‘Marvellous’ Hagler is another boxer whom I admire. He was a south paw too, and another hard puncher and he unified all the prestigious titles in the middleweight division before the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard moved up their weights to fight in the same division.”

The youngest of three children, Joyi was born in May 1982 at Mcwangele Village, Lady Frere in the former Transkei. His parents, Abraham and Evelyn Joyi, struggled to make ends meet in the village and when Joyi was one year old, they moved to Nondula Squatter Camp in Mdantsane. Here the family lived in a one-roomed shack for many years until Joyi was able to buy them a house from his winnings as the SA Champion in 2004.

Nkosinathi’s older brother, Temba, and his friends were amateur boxers at the Yonwaba Boxing Club in NU1 in Mdantsane and it was here that he became involved, albeit reluctantly and unenthusiastically at first, with boxing.

Away from the ring, Joyi is a soccer fanatic and a proud supporter of Bloemfontein Celtic and spends his spare time either watching soccer or enjoying traditional African music (his favourite genre is African jazz).

He also enjoys spending time with friends and holds his family close to his heart. In fact, Joyi readily admits that his mom still “spoils him rotten”. “To her, I am still that little five-year-old boy – her last born who never quite grew up!”

His advice to the youth of the Eastern Cape is simply to work hard, and to believe that work will eventually pay off.

“If you want success in your life, put your mind and

all your effort into it. There is nothing for nothing, but hard work always pays.”

As for his future, Joyi is adamant – he wants to achieve what no other South African boxer ever has. “I want to make history in boxing by unifying all four prestigious world titles, the IBF, WBC, WBA and WBO. That is my dream.”

Judging by his passion and tenacious determination, this is probably only a matter of time. − Gail Pullen

“My mom Evelyn is still my hero,” he says. “She is as strong as ever, even after the passing of my father seven years ago.”

What inspired you to write this book?I put together the surfing display at the Nahoon Point Coastal and Visitor Education Centre a few years ago and in the course of collecting information and surfing artefacts, realised there was a vast but fragmented story to be told of East London’s surfing history. Many of the older surfers had only shared their experiences with close friends and family and this seemed like an opportunity to take their stories a bit wider and have them recorded for posterity. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Very briefly, what is the book about? It’s about how surfing started in East London and the contribution that various key figures made to the sport and the development of what might be called a local ‘surf culture’. I try to relate East London’s surfing history to key developments in surfing and popular culture across South Africa and the world at the time. I’ve also tried to give it some social and political context, albeit in a minor way. I suppose it’s also about the allure of nostalgia, although I’m aware that this has its pitfalls… especially in South Africa.

What audience do you think the book will appeal to? Anyone who surfs. Surfing families in East London or formerly from East London. Tourists, hopefully. The South African surfing community, especially the old bullets. Actually, surf histories are quite big around the world – it’s that post-modern nostalgia thing again.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

There are some great old pictures in the book. Tell us a bit about these. Most of the pictures were borrowed directly from the older surfers I interviewed – they come from family scrapbooks and other personal archives. I also trawled the library, Daily Dispatch archives and got quite a bit of help from the staff of the East London Museum.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

What challenges have you faced in the process of publishing this book? All the usual ones such as trying to pin down a publisher and eventually self-publishing. Fortunately, I’ve had some invaluable assistance from the volunteer

Buffalo City 360 talks to veteran East London surfer Glenn Hollands about his new book “The Reef” which showcases the city’s rich and colourful surfing history.

committee that manages the Nahoon Point Nature Reserve. The technical side of the production was only possible because of a few good colleagues who put in their time for very little money. I also had to give up the idea that this was a nice hobby that could fill my weekends for another decade – sooner or later you have to go to print or the whole project becomes a joke.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Do you have any amusing anecdotes to share from your experience of writing this book?I made contact with Lee-Anne Joubert, the widow of East London’s famous surfer of the fifties and sixties, Bob Joubert. She now lives in the UK but gave me permission to access the family’s household goods which were in storage at Steers – we were searching for a sixties surfing video. At the depot I was confronted by three large containers such as you’d find on a ship. These had to be removed from the warehouse by huge industrial forklifts and then unpacked by hand. The sorting entailed the full contents of a large house – Steers provided half a

dozen workers and a supervisor who dutifully lined up the contents in long lines of 20m or more. We didn’t find much and it became clear that the task was hopeless. Sorry Steers… I should never have squealed about the paltry R400 charge. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

What do you hope to achieve with this book?Mainly to record East London’s place in surfing history and ensure that the memories and adventures of the surf pioneers are not lost forever. Hopefully it’ll also provide a giggle to those who are interested in surfing and surf culture. − Ruth Ritchie

CUISINE

Connoisseurlearn to taste like a true

No need to be an expert to have fun tasting – if you drink wine, you have taken the first step in how to ‘think’ wine!

The wine tasting ritual may feel silly and pretentious at first, but with some semi-thoughtful regular exposure to a broad spectrum of wines, you will

soon be confident and comfortable with the sensory language and appreciation of wine. Every grape variety has its own intrinsic personality traits that can easily be detected with practice. We recommend starting with single variety wines that are typical.

Begin your tasting by pouring around 50ml of wine into your tasting glass.

steP 1 SeeTilt your tasting glass to observe the colour and

how it changes from the heart to the edge of the glass. A white wine that is very pale straw with a green

tinge suggests a young wine made in a dry style. The more golden the wine appears may tell you that it is older, sweeter or has been exposed to wood.

Appearance is key to not only the age of red wines, but also the quality. If the colour of a red wine extends to the very edge of the glass, chances are the wine is high in extract and of a superior quality.

steP 2 Swirl and sniffSwirling the wine will release the fragrances and

aromas. Place your nose just into the rim of the glass and take a long thoughtful sniff of the wine.

What we smell when we nose a wine is in fact a complex of volatile chemical compounds or esters.

Since wine aromas have no original vocabulary of their own, we ‘borrow’ familiar terms and descriptions to identify the characteristics of the wine that we are tasting. For example, when a taster picks up coffee and chocolate on a Merlot, they are in fact recognising similar chemical complexes that occur in both the wine and the coffee/chocolate.

steP 3 Sip, spit or swallow Take a small amount of wine into your mouth and

roll it around allowing it to reach every area of your tongue and mouth. Breathing air over the wine with the perfectly polite wine taster’s slurp is known as retro-olfaction where aromas are forced behind the palate and into the nasal cavity.

It is at this stage that you will decide to swallow or spit the wine. Your decision may be as simple as if you like the taste - go ahead and swallow! If however you are planning on tasting and appreciating a long line-up of wines, it is etiquette to spit into a spittoon.

Once the wine has left your mouth, concentrate and savour the flavours and tactile experience that the wine has created, lingering thoughtfully on the aftertaste. Your sensory intellect will quickly calculate if this is an agreeable wine no matter what the style or variety - and the good news is there are 20 tasting measures in every bottle.

Our judge, Marlene Neumann’s, motivation:

The words that came to mind when I chose this image were sincerity and spontaneity.

The photographer has successfully encapsulated the spirit of East London in this image.

Portraying the natural beauty of our coastline and what it has to offer. There is a positive

feeling around this image as the photographer has captured the essence of the early

morning sunrise. A creative combination of balance and light together with positive and

negative shapes make this a worthy winner of the competition.
