A ripple of excitement spread through the room as Artistic Director Nicky Marshall presented this year’s Music Festival Programme to Festival Friends at their annual lunch in November.

Evening concerts will bring a range of contrasting group and individual performers from different styles and periods of classical music. We like to include composers we’ve not previously brought for you to hear in Budleigh. This year we’ll have Mussorgsky, Frank Bridge and Huw Watkins’ string quartet, with the composer himself joining the Sacconi String Quartet as pianist in the Dvořák Quintet. Other firsts include the Festival Orchestra playing Nicholas Marshall’s Five Country Dances and first appearances by Exeter Cathedral Choir and artists from the 12 Ensemble. Returning artists include Roderick Williams and Susie Allan; and Devon Opera for the final evening performance of a new compilation of operatic gems.

There is much to look forward to at lunchtimes, too. As usual, these will primarily feature artists with a local connection. Indeed, one of the performers in the Santiago Quartet lives right here in Budleigh. In response to the popularity of concerts with harp in recent years, we begin the season with a flute and harp duo. Amongst other musical treats we have a visit from the Sidmouth Town Band – they should have you marching along the High Street after their concert. For something completely different, Daughters of Elvin will play medieval music, and young Joel Munday looks set to steal your heart away with his violin recital.

This evening contains two significant ‘firsts’. The Festival is delighted to welcome the Exeter Cathedral Choir for the first time. The choir will be made up of all the elements available to Director Timothy Noon, with the thirty-six boy and girl choristers, plus the adult lay vicars and choral scholars, coming together to create a substantial choral sound. Add to this a top harpist, percussionist and organist for the Bernstein and we have a pool of excellent local professional musicians.

We also feature for the first time music by Leonard Bernstein who is famous for many works, most notably West Side Story, Candide and On The Town. The Chichester Psalms is affirmative, energetic and rousing, yet also moving and at times serene. It is widely regarded as one of the 20th Century’s great choral works. The programme will also include other favourite pieces for choir and organ from five centuries of choral music.

Kiev-born Alexei Grynyuk showed a keen interest in music from an early age and started giving his first concerts aged just six. He attracted wide attention at the age of thirteen when he won first prize at the Sergei Diaghilev piano competition in Moscow. He went on to achieve numerous awards in several international competitions.

He has given solo recitals at many prestigious venues and festivals around the world and frequently broadcast on radio and television. The Festival Orchestra has been a regular part of the Festival since its formation in 2006 by Nicholas Marshall, our Artistic Director, drawing on professional players from around the South West region.Giovanni Guzzo has established himself as one of the most versatile and charismatic performers of his generation. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music and made his debut as soloist with the Royal

Philharmonic Orchestra. Formed as recently as 2015 the Marlborough Piano Quartet is a group of internationally renowned musicians, all of whom are accomplished soloists and ensemble players in their own right.

Pianist Anna Tilbrook and cellist Guy Johnston make a welcome return

to the Festival, joined by violinist Giovanni Guzzo and violist Philip Dukes. Their repertoire is both diverse and flexible (sometimes including additional guest artists) and they are rapidly gaining a wide reputation, having already given many successful concerts in this country.

The renowned baritone Roderick Williams, making a welcome return to the Festival, is an exceptionally versatile artist whose intelligent musicality is admired in works from Monteverdi to Maxwell Davies. He has become a familiar presence on the operatic stage and has made something of a speciality of opera in concert. His burnished and flexible baritone is equally in demand for recitals and oratorio. He is also a successful composer.

Susie Allan studied music at Worcester College, Oxford, and piano accompaniment at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she won numerous awards. Other prizes include Accompanist of the Year (1993) and the Gerald Moore Award (1994).

Sidmouth Town Band was founded in 1862. It has built up a reputation for being one of Devon’s most entertaining and successful brass bands. The band plays a central part in local events, recently including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and 90th Birthday. The band’s summer season of concerts in Sidmouth’s Connaught Gardens attracts visitors from all over the South West.

Jazz interpretations of European classical music with a twist. Martin Dale is one of the busiest and most popular saxophonists in the South West. He has recorded for the BBC on radio and television sound tracks. Gavin Martin joined the Royal Marines School of Music in 1980. In 1994 he was awarded the Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians with his LRSM Diploma.Jim Rintoul plays electric and double bass. He studied classical music with the Assistant Principal Bassist of the Melbourne Symphony. He studied jazz with some world famous bass players.

They work with instrumentalists, singers, storytellers and masked dancers. Katy Marchant founded Daughters of Elvin and, inspired by medieval iconography, made the fantastical masks and costumes used in the performances. Steve Tyler is a well respected hurdy gurdy player, equally at home with early music, folk music and modern compositions. Alison Burnett makes a welcome return to the Festival as the soprano soloist. They have performed together in Cyprus as well as locally.

Ruth Molins (flute) and Sally Jenkins (harp)Ruth Molins enjoys a busy freelance career playing in orchestral, chamber and contemporary music, jazz and musical theatre settings across the South West. Ruth teaches flute and piano. She coaches the wind section of the Devon Youth Symphony Orchestra and is the founder and musical director of Exeter Youth Flutes.

Sally Jenkins is an experienced pedal and early triple harpist, and has presented lecture-recitals on the history of the instrument. Sally held Director of Music roles at Clifton High School and the Royal High School, Bath. She currently enjoys a successful freelance career, performing and teaching.

Adrian Harvey joined the band as Musical Director in 1998. Under his leadership, the band has represented Sidmouth and the West of England at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, most recently in September 2016.

Ed Jones is the current organ scholar at Exeter Cathedral He achieved a First class B Mus and a PhD in Musical Composition at Aberdeen University. Ed is also a singer and conductor and performs with a variety of groups ranging from Cathedral choirs to staged operas.

Michael Graham is a Lay Clerk at Exeter Cathedral and Director of Chapel Music at Exeter University. He was an organ scholar at Liverpool and Exeter Cathedrals. Michael is an accomplished tenor and directs several choirs and ensembles including the Budleigh Salterton Male Voice Choir.

Joel Munday began learning the violin at the age of seven. He attends the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music where he studies with the internationally renowned pedagogue, Professor Ani Schnarch. Joel has achieved several prestigious awards including the first Young Musician of Wiltshire title and the Two Moors Festival Young Musicians’ Platform Competition.

Peter Clarke has a range of performance experience both as soloist and accompanist. He has worked extensively with several Youth Orchestras as an arranger and orchestrator. Peter has recently composed two violin sonatas for Joel Munday.

The Santiago Quartet was founded when two of its members moved to England after several years with the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra. Whilst working in Mexico, the musicians discovered a repertoire that is rarely or never performed in the United Kingdom. Santiago Quartet’s first album, Latin Perspective, was a collaboration with Cuban guitarist Ahmed Dickinson and received outstanding reviews. They also collaborate with Bandoneon player Julian Rowlands and are preparing for the release of their second album. The Quartet is committed to playing an active role in the education of young musicians.

Tyler studied at the Purcell School for Young Musicians. He then continued at the Royal Northern College of Music graduating with first class honours. Tyler won the Gold Medal competition at the Royal Northern and he will play in the prize winners’ concert at Wigmore Hall in Spring 2017.

Tyler has become a virtuoso pianist who enjoys tackling some of the most demanding works in the repertoire. He has performed Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Sonata at Wigmore and Cadogan Halls and Scriabin’s 5th Sonata at the Southbank’s Purcell Room. Tyler won first prize in the keyboard section of the Royal Overseas League Competition in February, 2016.

CONCERT ARRANGEMENTSDoor opening times: The doors will normally be opened 30 minutes before the start of each concert – 7.00pm for evening concerts and 11.30am for lunchtime concerts. Festival Friends will be allowed into concerts at St Peter’s at 6.50pm. The concert manager holds the right to vary these times should conditions dictate.

Programmes for evening concerts will cost £1.50; lunchtime programmes are free.

Ideas for the latter include:• Evening concert fees – from individual performers to a full orchestra (£700 to £5,000)• Lunchtime concert costs (£100 – £250 each) • Hire of piano (£1,700) • Use of St Peter’s (up to £400 per evening concert) • Use of Temple Church (£800 for the week) • Cost of printing: programmes (£1,000), flyers (£300) and brochure (£2,000) • Maintenance of the website (£150 per year)
