Welcome to the Palace Theatre and to the Little Theatre Company’s 60th Anniversary Production of “Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story”.Following on from the highly successful “Sweeney Todd” earlier in the year, we are excited to be staging the Essex Amateur Premiere of “Buddy”. 2009 also marks the 50th anniversary of Buddy Holly’s untimely death at the age of just 22, so this is a fitting tribute to the man and his music. It is rather poignant that one of the LTC’s long-serving members, Dave Tobin, is not here to take part in this show. Dave, a member for 36 years and involved in 40 shows, was a great fan of Buddy Holly and a close friend of his family. He moved from England to Lubbock a few years ago, but sadly died there. I’m sure he would have been thrilled that we are staging this show.

The preparations for this production have been extremely enjoyable and we are honoured to be telling the story of the two short (but hugely successful) years in the life of one of history’s greatest rock and roll legends. This experience has also moved the group into a whole new area, ready for new and exciting future shows ahead. So watch this space!!!

Speaking of future shows, we will be back at this theatre in February, April and October 2010 with “Stepping Out”, “Mack & Mabel” and “Little Shop of Horrors”, so we hope to see you all then.

All that remains for me to say is put on your Buddy glasses, sit back and get ready for a rock and rollercoaster ride that will have you dancing in the aisles!!

SynopsisA wonderful celebration of the life and music of Buddy Holly who left a legacy of great songs which are still popular today. The Big Bopper and Ritchie valens also died in the plane crash that robbed the world of such a great talent, so the show also features their greatest hits.

The story starts with Buddy and the Crickets singing country music to earn a living, but they soon convince the record producers that rock and roll is the future of music and start recording hits including “Peggy Sue”, “Rave On”, “Raining in my Heart” and many others. The story charts the other love of his life, Maria Elena who he later marries.

After parting company with the Crickets, Buddy goes on to success after success and the second act of the show features many hits from his last concert at Clear Lake, Iowa.

So sit back and let the wonderful music flood over you, or stand and join in with the songs you know so well. In his short life Buddy Holly recorded some of the best loved hits of the day, so join the cast and Rave On!

This is Scott’s 4th show with the LTC and he is thrilled to be playing the part of 17-year old Ritchie. Since joining the LTC two years ago he has played Curly (Oklahoma), Steve (Summer Holiday) and most recently Sweeney Todd in our critically acclaimed last production. Over the years, Scott has been privileged to play many principal roles including Ugly (Honk), Tin Man (Wizard of Oz) and Hero (Forum) as well as performing the roles of Jesus and Judas (Jesus Christ Superstar), Joseph (Joseph) and Jean valjean (Les Miserable) in concert versions of these shows.

This is Bradley’s fifth show for the LTC. As well as designing all the publicity material and programmes for recent shows, Bradley has also played principal roles, including Ali Hakim (Oklahoma!) and Beadle Bamford (Sweeney Todd). Before he joined the LTC he performed many varied roles in a great number of shows, including nicely nicely (Guys and Dolls), Francis Fryer (Calamity Jane), Rene (‘Allo ‘Allo) and Seymour (Little Shop of Horrors). He has also played The Big Bopper before (Heaven Can Wait) and so has relished the opportunity to reprise this role in “Buddy”.

Antony has been a member of the LTC since 2005 and has played various principal roles, including Benny (Guys and Dolls), Gremio (Kiss Me Kate) and, most recently, Pirelli (Sweeney Todd). He has also worked on the production side as an Assistant Director (Oklahoma!). Having learnt how to carry out a wet shave using a razor for “Sweeney Todd”, Antony has again had to learn a new skill for this role – that of playing a guitar.

This show marks Tim’s return to the stage having been backstage or directing for the last two years, and ‘Oh Boy’ what a show to return on! Previous roles include Horner (Lust), The Cat (Honk), Raoul (Eating Raoul), Sky Masterson (Guys and Dolls) and Miles Gloriosus (A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum). Tim has directed two highly successful shows for the LTC – “Guys and Dolls” and “Oklahoma” - and he is due to direct “Mack and Mabel” in April 2010.

Darren has been a member of the LTC for over 10 years and originally joined us whilst studying Performing Arts at College. In that time, he has appeared in all but 3 of our productions and has had the opportunity to play many varied roles. These include Billy Crocker (Anything Goes), Prince Edward (Slipper and the Rose), Fatty Arbuckle (Mack & Mabel) and more recently, Tobias (Sweeney Todd) , Tony Forte (Copacabana) and Don (Summer Holiday). He’s had to learn how to play the double bass to play Joe - adding yet another string (ouch!) to his bow.

This is Dave’s 10th consecutive show for the LTC since joining for “Hello Dolly” in 2005. He has enjoyed a number of principal roles including nathan Detroit (Guys and Dolls), Sergeant of Police (Pirates of Penzance) and Rico Castelli (Copacabana). Since the LTC returned to the Palace Theatre, Dave has also been assistant director for “Oklahoma” and director of “Summer Holiday”. He loves rock and roll (being of a certain age!) and so has thoroughly enjoyed being involved in “Buddy”.

Jamie first started performing on the stage when he was eleven and has been hooked ever since. This is his fifth show with the LTC, but he has been fortunate to have played various roles over the years, such as Scarecrow (Wizard of Oz), Rick (Slice of Saturday night), Clint McClaird (Wild Wild Women) and, most recently, Anthony (Sweeney Todd). Jamie has enjoyed playing the part of Jerry in the production of “Buddy” and has learnt that playing the drums is not easy!

Shirley has been a member of the LTC since 1977 during which time she has taken numerous roles in both musicals and plays. These include; Widow Corney (Oliver), The Queen (Slipper and the Rose), Madam Dindon (La Cage aux Folles), Morgan le Fey (Camelot), Mrs Mullins (Carousel), Lalume (Kismet), Patricia Foder (Crazy for You) and Mrs Reece several times in the Farndale Plays. Shirley has been a committee member for the LTC during her membership and has thoroughly enjoyed all the friends and fun over the years.

This will be Sarah’s fifteenth show with the LTC. Over the years she has been lucky enough to have played various principal roles; Reno Sweeney (Anything Goes), Adelaide Adams (Calamity Jane), Miss Adelaide (Guys and Dolls), Conchita Alverez (Copacabana) and Ado Annie (Oklahoma). Sarah is delighted to be playing a real life character this time - Maria Elena.

A member of the LTC for 25 years and having enjoyed a number of past leads such as Curly in ‘Oklahoma’ and Sky Masterson in ‘Guys and Dolls’, Paul is now looking forward to playing the cameo role of DJ Hipockets Duncan, Buddy Holly’s first manager and early mentor.

T he Production Team

Ian originally trained at Rose Bruford studying technical theatre. After college he spent several years touring throughout the south-east and in London’s West End. Having worked in many different capacities, he is happy to be back with the LTC where he first appeared as a child in Fagin’s gang (Oliver). He is particularly delighted to be on the production team bringing “Buddy” to life again as he spent some time working on London’s West End production of this show.

Steph has been a member of the LTC for many years and now splits her time between performing and directing. Two of her favourite roles have been Anna (The King & I), and Kate (Kiss Me Kate): other roles include, Miss Hannigan (Annie), Dolly Levi (Hello Dolly) and Amalia Balash (She Loves Me). Her directorial debut came with “42nd Street”, which she has now directed twice, together with “Crazy For You”, “Singing In The Rain” and “Some Like It Hot”. In recent years she has directed our hilarious “Farndale Avenue Townswomens Guild” plays. When not at rehearsals, her job finds her at a local further education college where she teaches Creative Arts. She also helps run BOSCATS, a junior musical group in Benfleet, and is an active member of Rug Opera.

Laura has been a member of the LTC since the age of 15 after first appearing on stage as a child in “Carousel” & “Will Rogers Follies”. She has enjoyed such roles as Peggy (42nd Street), Lola La Mar (Copacabana) and Johanna in our recent production of “Sweeney Todd”. Laura has been actively involved in the choreography of many shows including “Copacabana” and “Oklahoma” and is very excited to be working with her mother and future husband on this energy infused production of ‘Buddy’.

Rob’s interest in lighting was ingrained from an early age through his father’s entertainments company. As a freelance lighting technician he has now successfully worked for BBC and ITv including such shows as Totally Saturday, Beat the Star, Britain’s Got Talent, Colour of Money and most recently x Factor & Proms in the Park. Being a local man, he is still proud to work with the Cliffs Pavilion and Palace Theatre on many major touring events. To work with local theatre societies such as The Little Theatre Company and enhance their production with the use of imaginative lighting gives great work satisfaction and an exciting challenge. Robert’s first production with the LTC was the very successful Sweeney Todd here at the Palace Theatre earlier this year.

During his school and collage years, Glenn took an active part in lighting and stage management roles for school performances, whilst studying Music, Performing Arts and Music Technology. He then went on to study Multimedia Technology and Music Production at the University of Derby which he graduated from in 2006. After leaving University Glenn worked freelance as a Broadcast vision and Sound Engineer for a year before returning to Southend Theatres. Over the last two years Glenn has been designing and engineering the sound for locally produced musicals at both the Cliffs Pavilion and The Palace Theatre, titles include Annie, The Witches of Eastwick, Oklahoma!, Summer Holiday, West Side Story, Calamity Jane and Sweeney Todd. Glenn always enjoys working with the LTC and looks forward to this production of Buddy.

Paul started his musical career at the age of 8 playing flute and guitar. He is still playing the flute (and percussion when “persuaded”) as a member of the Southend Philharmonia Orchestra. He has been Assistant Musical Director for the Eastwood Chorale for many years and has MD’d for many local operatic societies, including Rayleigh Operatic, Thundersley Operatic and Ingatestone Operatic. He was also involved with Rainbow 2000 for many years, both onstage and as Assistant MD. This is his second show for the LTC where he has worked as both Chorus Master and MD, the previous one being the very different and challenging Sondheim musical “Sweeney Todd”.

Doreen has been a member of the LTC for many years and in that time she has taken numerous leading roles, including Rose Marie (Rose Marie), Elizabeth (Robert and Elizabeth), Sarah (Bitter Sweet) and Eurydice (Orpheus in the Underworld), and has appeared in our hugely successful Farndale series of comedies. She has directed various shows, including our award-winning “The King and I”, been Chorus Mistress for many shows and MD (Godspell and The Wiz). In recent years she has also turned her attention to costuming the LTC productions.

Holley was born in Lubbock, Texas. The Holleys were a musical family and as a young boy Holley learned to play the violin, piano and guitar. In the fall of 1949 he met Bob Montgomery at Hutchison Jr. High School. They shared a common interest in music, and soon teamed up to perform as the duo ‘Buddy and Bob’. Initially influenced by bluegrass music, they sang harmony duets at local clubs and high school talent shows. Holley’s big break came when they opened for Bill Haley and his Comets at a local rock show organized by Eddie Crandall who was also the manager for Marty Robbins. As a result of this performance, Holley was offered a contract with Decca Records to work alone. However, early success as a solo artist eluded him.

Back in Lubbock, Holley formed his own band, ‘The Crickets’, and began making records at norman Petty’s studios in Clovis, new Mexico. Among the songs they recorded was “That’ll Be The Day”, which takes its title from a phrase that John Wayne’s character uses repeatedly in the movie, The Searchers. Petty had music industry contacts, and believing that “That’ll Be The Day” would be a hit single, he contacted publishers and labels. Coral Records, a subsidiary of Decca, signed Buddy Holly and The Crickets. This put Buddy in the unusual position of having two record contracts at the same time. Before “That’ll Be The Day” had its nationwide release and became a smash hit, Holley played lead guitar on the hit-single “Starlight”, recorded in April 1957, featuring Jack Huddle.

Holly’s music was sophisticated for its day, including the use of instruments considered novel for rock and roll, such as the celesta (heard on “Everyday”). Holly was an influential lead and rhythm guitarist, notably on songs such as “Peggy Sue” and “not Fade Away”. While Holly could pump out ‘boy-loves-girl’ songs with the best of his contemporaries, other songs featured more sophisticated lyrics and more complex harmonies and melodies than had been previously shown in the genre. Many of his songs feature a unique vocal ‘hiccup’ technique, a clipped ‘uh’ sound used to emphasize certain words in any given song, especially the rockers. For example, the start of the raucous number “Rave On”: “We-UH-ell, the little things you say and do, make me want to be with you-UH-ou...”

Holly also managed to bridge some of the racial divide that punctuated rock, notably winning over an all-black audience when accidentally booked for new York’s Apollo Theatre.

After the release of several highly successful songs, in March of 1958, he and the Crickets toured the United Kingdom. In the audience were teenagers named John Lennon and Paul McCartney, who later cited

Holly as a primary influence (the band’s name, The Beatles, was later chosen partly in homage to Holly’s Crickets). The Beatles did a cover version of “Words Of Love” that was an almost perfect reproduction of Holly’s version. The Rolling Stones did a cover of “not Fade Away”. The group, The Hollies were named in homage.

Holly’s personal style, more controlled and cerebral than Elvis’s and more youthful and innovative than the country and western stars of his day, would have an influence on youth culture on both sides of the Atlantic for decades to come, reflected particularly in the new Wave movement in artists such as Elvis Costello and Marshall Crenshaw, and earlier in folk rock bands like The Byrds and The Turtles.

He married Maria Elena Santiago on August 15, 1958.

In 1959, Holly split with the Crickets and began a solo tour with other notable performers including Ritchie valens and J.P. Richardson, ‘The Big Bopper’. One audience member at the tour stop in Duluth, Minnesota, was a young Bobby Zimmerman who would later be known as Bob Dylan.

Following the February 2nd performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, the performers and their road crew drew straws to decide who would fly in the airplane, and who would ride in the unheated tour bus. The winners were Holly, valens and Richardson. The four-passenger Beechcraft Bonanza took off into a blinding snow storm and crashed into Albert Juhl’s corn field several miles after takeoff at 1.05am. The crash killed Holly, valens, Richardson, and pilot Roger Peterson, leaving Holly’s pregnant bride, Maria Elena Holly, a widow (she would miscarry soon after). Funeral services were held at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Lubbock, Texas, and Buddy Holly was interred in the City of Lubbock Cemetery.

Holly’s headstone carries the correct spelling of his name, Buddy Holley. It also features a carving of his favourite guitar. Downtown Lubbock has a ‘walk of fame’ with plaques to various area artists such as Mac Davis and Waylon Jennings, with a life-size statue of a guitar playing Buddy as its centrepiece. The tragic plane crash inspired singer Don McLean’s popular 1971 ballad “American Pie”, and immortalized February 3rd as “The Day The Music Died”. Contrary to popular myth, “American Pie” was not the name of the ill-fated airplane.

The Surf Ballroom, a popular and old-fashioned dance hall that dates to the height of Big Band Era, continues to put on shows, notably an annual Buddy Holly tribute on the anniversary of his last performances.

the MAn...the MUSIC...the LEGEnD...Charles Hardin Holley (September 7, 1936 – February 3, 1959), better known as Buddy Holly, was an American singer, songwriter, and a pioneer of Rock and Roll. The change of spelling of Holley to Holly came about because of an error in a contract he was asked to sign, listing him as Buddy Holly. That spelling was then adopted for his professional career.

36The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA)Founded in 1899, is the main representative body for amateur theatre in the UK. It has a membership of some 2500 amateur/community theatre groups and 3000 individual enthusiasts throughout the UK, staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of performing venues, ranging from the country’s leading professional theatres to village halls. Members have access to a wide range of benefits.

NODA is divided into eleven national Regions, each headed by an Region Councillor who sits on the Council (the ruling body of the Association), supported by a network of Regional Representatives and other volunteers. These volunteers are the vital link to the grass roots of the Association, the amateur theatre companies themselves. The Association is administered from its Headquarters in Peterborough, with a knowledgeable and friendly staff able to deal with virtually any enquiry relating to amateur theatre.

There is a broad spectrum of ages involved with amateur theatre nationwide, from a burgeoning number of youth groups to adult companies, which meet the needs of all levels of both performers, whether dramatic or musical, and enthusiasts involved backstage, front of house or in administration.

NODA aims: • To give a shared voice to the amateur theatre sector • To help amateur societies and individuals achieve the highest standards of best practice and performance • To provide leadership and advice to enable the amateur theatre sector to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century

The link to the LTC...Lady Dorothy McAdden, who gives her name to the BUST unit, is the President of the Little Theatre Company. Dot, as she has always been affectionately known to us in LTC, was a member of the Company when the first production was staged back in 1949. Her husband was the LTC’s first President for many years and when he died Dot took on the role.

Over the last six shows we have tried to demonstrate our support to the BUST unit in a practical way by making a donation from the opening nights’ ticket sales: this has amounted to a total of £1,950.00. As well as this, we have taken a collection as our audiences have left the theatre on these opening nights and we know that these have amounted to a generous sum.

Once again, we will be making a donation to BUST from the first night of this show – Sweeney Todd – and taking a leaving collection.

Where it all started...The Lady McAdden Unit, affectionately known as BUST, has provided a major health function for women since the unit opened in 1976. The official opening followed a massive fund raising campaign which was spearheaded by the South East Essex ‘Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds’ to whom the charity remains affiliated, and supported by Lady Dorothy McAdden, wife of the late Sir Stephen McAdden, then MP for Southend East.

Why breast cancer screening is important...Screening aims to detect cancer in its infancy. Early detection of breast abnormalities could have a significant effect on treatment and beating the disease. In addition countless women have their fears allayed.

Our Diamond AnniversaryThis year marks the 60th anniversary of the LTC.The Company was formed in 1948 by a dozen or so enthusiasts, most of whom had some experience on the amateur stage, and was originally called The Little Theatre Club. The original intention was to present shows in a modest way for charities, but within a few months it was learned that, owing to a cancelled booking, it was possible to hire the Palace Theatre, Westcliff, for a week. And so, in December 1949 the first LTC production was staged – “No No Nanette”. Since then, the company has presented 104 musicals and 33 plays. We have records of over 1000 members, many of whom have gone on to pursue a professional career in theatre and entertainment: these include our Patron, Gemma Craven, Mark Cotgrove (aka Snowboy) and Lee Mead. Always keen to try new things over the years, we have presented 3 UK amateur premieres plus numerous regional ones, and in the process we have won 11 NODA awards.
