CLASS OR TEAM NEWSLETTERS These are sent home (as the need is required) to inform you of specific events relating to a particular class or group of classes. A Team newsletter is sent home at least once each term to keep you up to date with current happenings. TELEPHONE, VISITS OR EMAIL The telephone is a fast efficient means of keeping in touch. Do not hesitate to phone or email if you wish to see the class teacher or me about a specific matter. Please have in place a contingency plan for rainy days as the students attend lessons outside of their home room and it makes it difficult to ensure any messages get to them before they leave for the day. In order to minimise disruptions and to ensure security of students and property we ask that parents do not go directly to classrooms during the school day. When visiting during school hours (8.00am – 3.30pm) please report initially to the office. The office staff will assist you in the first instance. If your child has an appointment during the school day please inform your child and teacher of the time your child needs to leave school. Students may then excuse themselves from the lesson, sign out at the office and wait for you. On return or if late for school they are to sign in at the school office. Messages for students need only to be given in an emergency situation. If possible please make after school arrangements prior to the start of the school day. ABSENCES If any student is absent or late to school, please phone the school office asap in the morning and leave a message on the ‘absence line answer phone’. For safety reasons, all unexplained absences are followed up. It is against the law for students who are absent to be left at home by themselves – they must have adult supervision. If a student is late to school for any reason they need to sign in at the office, alternatively if they are required to leave school early they must sign out at the office. MEDICAL ISSUES Some of our students have health conditions that the school needs to be aware of. If your child has a health need please contact Penny Boyle [email protected] at the school office. An action plan may be required for students with high health needs. It is hoped that with communication channels kept open, discussion can take place before concerns arise. PARKING/STOPPING Bucklands Beach road is a busy road. If possible, please encourage your child to walk to and from school. Alternatively your child could be dropped off and picked up at a point close to school. Manukau City Council’s Parking Services have asked us to advise you that due to an increase in complaints regarding illegal and dangerous parking around schools they will be doing regular school enforcement patrols. They will no longer be asking cars to be moved and instead will be issuing infringement notices. Please ensure you obey the parking restrictions around the school - especially yellow line areas around our pedestrian crossing. The speed limit is 40km in the immediate area around school. Please be aware that the St John’s church car park is not available for pick up and drop off of students. The kindergarten is at full capacity and it is important parents of pre schoolers are able to park in this area for safe collection of their children. SUN PROTECTION As part of our Health & Safety procedures our school has a Sun Protection Policy. All students are expected to wear a hat of regulation style from Labour weekend through to Easter. (Either a plain navy non-logo blue cap or a plain navy blue round brim hat). Students who do not have a hat will not be permitted to move beyond the shaded courtyard and covered way areas during interval and lunch breaks. Students are also expected to wear their hats to and from school. This is a health issue and we seek your support for the benefit of our students. Caps and bucket style hats can be purchased from John Russell Menswear, Howick. Please ensure hats are named with the student’s name and room number. BUCKLANDS BEACH INTERMEDIATE FEBUARY 2016

SCHOOL SPORT Sport is an important component of BBI culture and student life. BBI offers many different sporting activities and programmes for students. The main areas are: South Eastern Zone and Inter Zone sports, the Lunchtime Sport Programme and After School Sports programme. Throughout the year, many outside agencies offer sports for BBI students. Information is passed on to students and it is the student’s responsibility to get involved. BBI is a member of Auckland Intermediate Sports Competition, South Eastern Zone. As a member of the South Eastern Zone cluster, BBI enter a varity of sporting codes. Trials for each sporting code usually begin the month prior to the tournament. Trials and practices are generally held during lunchtimes, although some may be held before or after school. Trial times are dependant on the teacher in charge of the specific sporting code. Students qualify for the final team if they meet a combination of commitment and ability. The emphasis of the Lunchtime Sports’ Programme is PARTICIPATION. The competition is an inter-class competition that caters for classes. At the end of each term, the Y7 & Y8 class with the most points wins a class shield. Notices regarding South Eastern Zone, lunchtime sport, after school sport and other sporting events are made during assembly and morning news times. Students are responsible for noting the times and dates of the activities. If you have any questions regarding sporting life at BBI or you have any sports skills or knowledge that could benefit the school and its teams and activities, please contact Stacey Knowles ([email protected]) or Ed Roper [email protected] who will be leading school sport this year.

SCHOOL STATIONERY

A Stationery list has been sent home listing requirements for this year. Please pay for stationery only on the form provided by cash or cheque. To simplify stationery sales we are selling stationery by the “pack”. Our pack sales are at a discount from standard retail prices and are very competitive with the discount prices currently being offered elsewhere. If parents choose not to buy the pack as a whole then individual items can be bought elsewhere. Stationery and payment should be bought to school on Wednesday 3 February or Thursday 4 February so that the students stationery requirements can be fulfilled asap. Students are to take these orders to their class with them as they will be called up to get them by class. Individual stationery items will not be sold from the school office If any additional items are required they will need to be purchased elsewhere.

MEET THE TEACHER”/BBI EXPO EVENING The Meet the Teacher and BBI Expo evening is being held from 6.30pm on Wednesday 17 February starting with the outdoor expo and moving into our school hall. This will be an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and to hear about class policy issues and major events. Year 7 teachers will also outline details about the forthcoming school camps and the evening is an opportunity to find out more about the exciting activities on offer at Bucklands Beach Intermediate for your child before meeting your child’s teacher.

SECOND HAND UNIFORM SHOP The second hand uniform shop is run by volunteers from the PTA. They sell second hand uniforms and new socks and tights. The uniform shop will be open every Monday from 8.00am – 8.30am and 3.00pm – 3.30pm.

AFTER SCHOOL CLASSES For several years we have run after school classes in a variety of areas of interest. The after school classes are held on school days over a semester. A booklet with information on courses offered and enrolment forms will be sent home shortly.

THE SCHOOL DAY Please note our school day commences at 8.40am. This allows time for all administration, notices, roll calls, etc to be undertaken without disrupting prime learning time. We need to be assured that lessons are underway promptly by 9am daily. Please ensure your son/daughter leaves home in time to be here for the 8.40am roll call. Students are able to enter classes at 8.15am or visit our library from 8am. Please ensure your son/daughter leaves home in time to be here by 8.30am and ready and changed when necessary for fitness and the 8.40am roll call. The school day is 8.40am - 3pm daily. School does not close early on the end of term or before a public holiday weekend.

PARENT/GUARDIAN CONTACT It is very important that the school office is notified immediately of any change of address and home or work telephone numbers. This is a safety issue. Also if your email address ever changes please also notify the school office.

DAMAGE TO PROPERTY It is important that students are encouraged to be independent while at BBI and this also applies to safely looking after personal property. Please note that where students cause deliberate damage to school property a charge for replacement/repair will be made. This does not apply to accidental damage (unless students have not followed school rules).

READING SUPPORT PROGRAMME Each year, for many years now, we have run a “Parent Reading Support” programme. Large numbers of students have made significant improvements in their reading as a result of this extra assistance. Once again we are calling for your help. If you have 1 hour a day on two afternoons a week available we would appreciate your assistance. Your support is given to three or four children, individually, encouraging them to enjoy reading and to improve their reading skills. No previous experience is required as we can give you the training required.

This year the programme will be closely supervised by Mrs Anne McSkimming. Please phone the school office or contact Mrs Anne McSkimming if you require more information. (email:- [email protected])UNIFORM Please read the prospectus carefully especially regarding appropriate footwear. Students will require clothing change for sport, fitness or physical education programmes daily (it is a good idea for students to wear running shoes for PE). With so many students changing, real problems can arise with unnamed clothing. Last year we had to dispose of a considerable quantity for which no owners could be found. We urge you to see that all clothing is named clearly as this can help us return mislaid items to the rightful owners.

Best wishes for the year ahead.
